Here's the gist of what happened for people who don't want to read the article:

Sledge Hammer, whose legal name was Marland Anderson, had been in a coma since Monday morning after an altercation with police on Sunday night that resulted in him being shot with a Taser gun, Curtis said.

Anderson fought for his life all week, Curtis said, but doctors told Anderson’s mother that he likely would never come out of the coma and if he did, he would not regain cognitive functions. So Anderson’s mother decided to take him off the respirator Thursday night.

“It turned out he genetically had a mild form of schizophrenia, and it wasn’t a problem until he started smoking pot and taking various things for depression,” Curtis explained. “It got worse and he would have thoughts of extreme paranoia and anxiety.”

On Sunday night in Reseda, Anderson suffered a severe anxiety attack and his girlfriend called 911 to prevent him from harming himself.

“She felt as though he was mentally unstable,” Curtis said. “She was requesting an ambulance to come get him, but the police showed up with an ambulance and the police walked him down to the ambulance.”

He added, “Marlon was not a violent person. He had no police record, none. He had no weapon on him. They were the ones that walked him down to the ambulance. He was already frisked. They knew he wasn’t armed. Why did he get tasered so much. If they wouldn’t have done that, Marland Anderson would still be alive today.”

Firstly,

Tasers are dangerous. Many people have died as a result of being tasered.

Too many police officers are wreckless and irresponsible with the use of tasers.

In my opinion, tasers should either be banned or there should be much stricter rules or laws governing their use.

Secondly,

This tragedy illustrates the importance of having, once you're of legal age, an advanced directive such as a living will.

Because the police are poorly trained, that's why. That, plus the fact that 'Sledge Hammer' was a big man. Why get into a fight with him when you can put him on the ground with one hit of a Taser?

What's that, it didn't knock him down? Well, hit him again. What possible harm could it do to hit the body with repeated electric shocks?

Like I said, poorly trained, unless one believes the only purpose of their training is to keep them safe, and to hell with the general public, who deserve what they get for coming to the attention of the police in the first place.

R.I.P Seems like he had a cardiac arrhythmia, from the information presented, I don't know whether the taser caused or exacerbated an existing arrhythmia, but it is sad either way. Hopefully there will be an official review of the police's actions here.

He was a gentle giant. I met him on one of Vanessa's set when she shot him for Adam & Eve. And I would run into him at an occasional party.

He truly was one of the nicest guys I have met in this business and he treated female talent with a sense of respect that I have never seen from anyone else.

This is truly sad. He will be missed.

Based on his size, I just always assumed that he used steroids, at least at one point in his life. If he did, then I could see how this could have an effect on his heart.

I know that he and Katja Kassin were together a couple of years ago, so condolences to her as well.

This is his girlfriend Alexa Cruz. I was with Sledge for over 3 years and we were planning on getting married at the end of this year. He was not on steroids and was actually very against steroid use. He was naturally a big guy, he developed muscle easily and ate a good diet. There were no previous health issues, the doctors actually said his body was strong. The only health problem he had was his mental health. I called the police to get him help, and they tazed him 6 times apparently and killed him. The LAPD caused this death, he never too hard drugs or had a heart issue. The only ones to blame here are the LADP. This was a sick guy who needed help, NOT a criminal.

Just wanted to set things straight. Sledge did not deserve this. He was so respectful and he admired police and thought of them as heroes. I can answer any questions about him or this tragedy that you all have.

I'm sorry for your loss Alexa, but I'm sure words will be of little comfort at a time like this.

What was he doing when they started tazing him? Those cops sound really out of line.

Thank you for all of your condolences. Sledge was my first date and first (and only) boyfriend, as well as my soul mate. The kind words help so much.

I'm still not completely clear on what happened in the ambulance, but he shouldve been sedated the second he was taken in the ambulance. He made it clear that he was scared and tired, and I told the police that he was not in a good state of mind. I told them he trusted me and wouldnt hurt me even in a delusional state, but he might panic with them.

From what I know it took 2 hours to get him to the hospital, which was only 10 minutes away...the LAPD really messed up on this one. I was counting on them to take him to the hospital and help him, not kill him. This was so unecessary and I don't want this to happen to someone else..mentally ill people should get help, not treated like criminals.

Please accept my condolences to you and other members of Sledge's family.

Hopefully there will be an investigation and justice done.
Nothing will bring him back ..
But such investigations done properly may reduce chances of tragedies like this happening in future.

Very sad to hear.

Deaths keep occurring from police misuse of their tasers. We have had a number of inquiries into this issue in Australia and it is apparent that police are just not being trained properly on how to use the equipment. That, combined with poor, if any, training on calming a person experiencing a mental health episode, is a recipe for disaster.

He turned 39 in February and he didn't consider himself a part of any particular party, not republican or anything else. He just kept up with politics and news in general. Not sure which movie he shot last. Appreciate the condolences.

RIP Sledge, sad way to go. Hear about way too many people dying because of taser usage by Police. I can understand them using a taser if he was acting violently or had a weapon on him that he refused to give up but according to the article seems he wasn't violent & was checked for weapons. Just another case of the police abusing their power. Sympathies to his family & friends.

Sucks. I liked him. He was an unobtrusive presence and good performer.

But most importantly, he was a fellow human being, and no one deserves to die like that. RIP.

Whoa now! You are just going by what Stoney has said, but it's not clear where Stoney was when all this was happening. Was Stoney there when Sledge was being tased or is he going off second-hand information? It was established that Alexa was unaware of what had happened, so although her account was that he was not violent at the time that they first arrived, things obviously changed when she was not there, which basically throws her account of his behavior out the window.

According to the LA Times:

A porn actor who died after breaking free of a handcuff and tearing a gurney off its floor locks was Tasered and brought under control by six to eight LAPD officers, officials said Monday. The LAPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the death of Marland Anderson -- known professionally as Sledge Hammer -- after he became violent with paramedics and was restrained by Los Angeles police officers, who used a Taser to stun him.

...

Authorities say they responded to a call of an attempted suicide at a home in Reseda. When paramedics and officers arrived, they found Anderson with his girlfriend. Anderson had suffered a knife injury, Lt. Andrew Neiman said.
The girlfriend told officers Anderson tried to hurt himself with the knife and she pried it away from him, Neiman said.

He was then handcuffed to a gurney by police for transportation in an ambulance. An officer was riding in the ambulance with paramedics when Anderson became extremely agitated, Neiman said. Neiman said Anderson tried to stand up but moved with such force that he broke the gurney free from a floor lock and broke the handcuff.

"He was partially standing in the ambulance," Neiman said.

Paramedics were forced to stop the ambulance and a second officer following in a police car entered. To restrain Anderson, the officer used a Taser, but it failed to stop him, Neiman said.

The Taser, used in a stun mode, may have actually made contact with the other officer's leg because that officer complained he was being stunned, Neiman said.

Eventually, the officers called for backup. With Anderson -- who stood 6-foot-1 and had a muscular build -- then outside the ambulance, officers again used the Taser to try to restrain him and then used their body weight.

"Six to eight [officers] eventually managed to control him," Neiman said.

Neiman said a conscious and restrained Anderson was then put back into the ambulance and taken to a hospital. Once at the hospital, Anderson lost consciousness and died Friday morning. L.A. County coroner's officials expect to complete an autopsy on the San Fernando Valley resident on Tuesday.

Restraining porn actor Sledge Hammer required up to 8 cops, Taser

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If he broke his handcuff and the gurney, and it also took 6-8 cops to attempt to restrain him after he became enraged, then I do not know what else the police could have done within their power to diffuse the situation more safely for everybody involved other than to use a taser. The police do not sedate people, and I'm not sure what the protocol is for transporting mentally ill patients who have just attempted suicide because there is a risk of overdosing if you are unaware if they have taken medication as part of their suicide attempt, but that is on the paramedics, not the police, if they failed to medicate him when they possibly could have.

The report says that he did not lose consciousness until he reached the hospital, so is that true or false? Can anybody in the porn world refute that as an eyewitness? Stoney's account seems to contradict that, but then again, where was he when all this was happening?

This is tragic all around, but let's wait until an autopsy and an investigation is performed before we people, who were not there, start pointing fingers.

I cant comment much on what happened in the ambulance for now. I was there and I was the one who called the police. He was NOT on hard drugs and drug tests have proved this. The autopsy will say the same. He was mentally ill. Please don't assume things about someone you don't know. NBC has a mostly accurate story http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Porn-Actor-Sledge-Hammer-Marland-Anderson-Dies-Encounter-LAPD-Paramedics-Reseda-147646705.html

The original Xbiz article says:

Cruz said she actually did not know that Anderson had been forcefully subdued and was in a coma until she got to the hospital on Monday afternoon. She was upset that she wasn't informed of Anderson's condition sooner.

“The police didn’t tell me he was in ICU or he’d been tased. I thought he was getting treatment,” Cruz explained. “I thought he was in the 72-hour hold. When I got to the ICU, I asked multiple nurses and they all said he had been tased, that he was over-tased.”

If you were actually there, then how could you not know that he had been forcefully subdued? Obviously, you weren't there when his mood changed in the ambulance, or you are changing your story. Your account is before he raged, not during it, otherwise you would have known that he was subdued. What am I missing here?

I'm trying not to assume anything here, that's why I am asking questions about what is presented in the news articles. I assumed earlier that he had taken steroids at one point in his life, and you denied that, but you can only speak for the past 2-3 years of his life. He was big before he met you, and lots of people deny that they have ever used 'roids, so that did not really disprove it.

What exactly is inaccurate about it, and what is in it that is not in the NBCLA article?

Like I said before I cant comment on what happened in the ambulance. That's not changing my story, that's a legal matter. That's why I can't speak on it. There are a lot of things I cannot comment on right now, so I don't know what to tell you.

As for the steroids ask anyone who knew him before me. He was very against steroid use. I know it's hard to believe for many guys, but he was just a naturally big guy who developed muscle easily. Steroids had nothing to do w/this anyway, because as I said before he tested negative for steroids.

Unfortunately I can't comment on what the LA times got wrong , but it was not all accurate. I'm done with this board, thought I would try to clear things up and help set the story straight as much as I could... but obviously people are going to think and assume whatever they want. I'm heart broken and way to stressed to deal with this. Sorry I even joined this discussion.

@kingcat123: is there a reason you feel you need to be an asshole to someone who has lost the love of their life just a few days ago?

If you really, really feel you need to ask probing questions, and grill her on her testimony, can't it wait? I mean, at least until after the funeral?

Go away and don't come back until you can be a compassionate, empathetic human being.
