I'm not sure why but I've been getting the software caused connection error everytime I try to log in from my notebook. I first noticed it in LA thinking that the problem was the hotel's wireless connection. Then I noticed it didn't work with my bar's wireless either. Now that I'm back home it still won't connect via MIRC or java. My desktop works fine.

I've tried disabling the firewall to see if maybe a setting was causing the problem but that didn't work.

AFIK there aren't any problems.

Which program is giving the error code?

Both the java chat channels and mirc. It doesn't matter the ISP. Something in my notebook is corrupt. Maybe it doesn't like the standard irc port but I tested it without the firewall too.

10053 is a standard winsock error code provided by the win32 api. normally it shows up due to network problems in general. it is a very common error code, i don't think your machine is wrong instead it's your isp line for sure.

It turned out that the new version of McAfee was blocking IRC ports by default.

You forgot to ask yourself the most critical question that should always be asked when something goes wrong..."Did I install or update any software or hardware since the last time that the I successfully attempted this action.

If the answer is yes, then 99.9% of the time, that's your problem. "Yes, but nothing that would have affected this" is not a valid answer. That answer equals "YES".

It had worked fine for a week or two after the upgrade so I didn't have any reason to suspect it.

I used to get that same problem, when connecting to IRC channels, I started using a program called X-Chat and never had the problem since. It is free and fully functional for 30 days and then requires registration for $20 which includes free updates. It may still be usable as a trial after 30 days are passed with just an annoying reminder that pops up every time you start it but im not sure as mine is paid for. :)
