Is it New Sensations/Digital Sin, and other modern-release companies, or just me?

I just rented Cumming of Age #2 and I Love Brandy to check out stars like Brandy Talore, Michelle Maylene, and Taya Cruz (all cuties).

Goodlooking stars, razor-sharp detail, not-too-many closeups, good sex/heat. So my problem is...?

At least 90% of the sex footage is shot from either floor level, or at least below the horizontal level of the action, with most full body shots coming from behind (crack-and-sack view).

I'm not demanding POV, but I just can't get any strokeable perspective from these angles. Even the BJs are shot mostly with the camera apparently lying on the floor.

I've noticed this with numerous other newer releases, too. Do consumers actually prefer these screwy angles?

To me, shots with a quasi-POV, more-of-an-overhead view are a lot easier to gain perspective, and way more strokeable.

Comment?

18-inch-tall cameramen. Most preposterous thing I've ever heard.

Although there is a website with a midget pornstar. I'd give you a link, but I'm too lazy to find it right now. Maybe after I've eaten.

Based on previous threads, FA and I seem to agree on these types of things. So, no surprise, floor level shots irritate me too. :)

Every once in a while, as a variation, they're ok, but they are definitely very low on the list of the types of shots I like to see.

OK. I'm back. And, as promised, Here It Is. Midget Cum. You've gotta check out the trailers here. This little guy had me pissing in my pants laughing.

Yup it seems New Sensations are repeat offenders of this crime. I begin to wonder...does it ever cross anyone's mind that..."Hey.....I wonder what this would look like.....FROM THE FLOOR!!!"

On top of that, all you get to see from this vantage point is headless genitals....I could've just brought a mirror and laid it on the floor for that..

If you really want to understand why it's done, the easiest way is to get yourself a camcorder and try making your own porn. When you realize that most of the more "normal" angles make everything look flat, uninteresting and 2 dimensional, you'll start to see why they try and find angles that exaggerate perspective.

I will say they overdo it sometimes. But at least they're trying.

I try to be objective. I know it's human nature for a director/cameraman/editor to get bored with the same old thing, and to inject some creativity. And creativity is inarguably required in artistic endeavors such as film-making. I empathize with these guys' predicament

I maintain though that in porn their first duty is to remember their product is bought mainly by strokers. There is apparently a large subset of those consumers who get bored, too, by the same old angles -- otherwise upside-down, cockroach-cam shots wouldn't sell.

My post was meant to wonder out loud if I am in a minority -- one of those who wish only to imagine themselves as the guy having sex with a beautiful woman in a porn scene without having to crane their necks, use mirrors, or stand on their heads to do so.

I honestly don't mean to be a smartass about it, but if I want film artistry, I'll rent a Scorsese movie.

It's more than that, even. The human body is also a very difficult thing to shoot up close and straight on (especially in a standing position) without an extremely wide angle lens or moving back like 30 feet from the scene and zooming way in. Otherwise, you just end up with a small portion of a body in the screen at any given time. Wide angle lenses are not such a good solution because most of the cheaper ones are absolutely horrid and make everything look like you're looking through the peephole in your front door. The better ones are very expensive, still cause a lot of distortion and sometimes, you don't gain much more field of view by using them.

Moving way back and zooming in causes it's own problems. You get the opposite kind of distortion (although it's not quite as distracting as barrel distortion) and you have the added problem of not having the same freedom of movement as you'd have if you were closer up and at a wider angle. Plus, you're going to end up shooting anything that's between you and the performers.

So, one solution is to hit it at an angle that will allow more of the bodies of the performers to be in the frame. That generally means from down low or up high (although it could be from the side if it worked out that way). This does two things. It shows you more of the performers without having th keep the camera in constant motion (which people will complain about as well) and it also adds a little bit of dimension so it actually does kind of resemble reality instead of a two-dimensional photo. It obviously has it's limitations and no matter how they shoot it, somebody is going to be displeased. Personally, I'd be happy if somebody could just manufacture a camera lens that doesn't make everything look like peephole vision. The human body seriously doesn't benefit from that kind of distortion.
