I've decided to jot down my thoughts on the year that was 2003, from a strictly porn perspective. These are wholly biased thoughts and no effort has been spent on trying to sanitize them in order to create a farcical politically correct tonality. Rather, this is raw and from the crotch... just the way these things rattle around in my brain. Also, while this is not intended to be yet another award show, I suppose in some ways it suffices... at least for my purposes.

So feel free to chime in and share your thoughts as each topic unfolds... but remember, these are my feelings so I'm not likely to come around to your contrary opinions. But it's always fun to see how my direction varies from that of my esteemed colleagues.

So without further adieu...

Part 1 - The Studios

Evil Angel

Evil Angel is kind of like the Mercedes of Porn. High end, perfectly engineered and utterly reliable. This is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is obvious, but why the curse? Because it is so easy to take them for granted. In 2003 there was a lot of hullabaloo about new studios. But there was EA, steadily chunking out masterworks, never missing a beat. With Buttman, JJ, Leslie and Clarke, it's almost unfair to everyone else. To mix a metaphor, I'm a Nascar fan. I fondly remember Dale Earnhardt, at least now it's fondly. At the time, I hated him. Why? Because he always won! It wasn't fair to the other drivers. It didn't make for a fun and exciting race. But he was the best. Evil Angel is the best... and 2003 was right on the mark.

Elegant Angel

If Evil Angel is the culmination of all things perfect in porn, in 2003 Elegant Angel became the perfect Yang to their Ying. Elegant positively fell apart, they imploded, they exhibited runaway entropy. What the hell happened? This once contending studio couldn't do anything right in 2003, and I predict their demise will continue. Too bad really, I'd rather retain my fond memories of this once great giant, than to watch them slowly fade to dust.

RLD and DVSX

At the onset of 2003, these two studio were truly Fledglings. By the end of the year, they had both become major forces in the industry. In many ways they share attributes and in others they do not.

RLD took to the route of creating so much volume in porn, that something simply had to work. Much of their early output was less than compelling, but they kept doing focus group studies (using the entire consumer base as the focus group) until they found their niche. So what is their niche? That's simple... everything that AnaDia used to fill! Raw flix filled with nasty depravity, shot in bright lights and delivered at a furious pace. Their stable of directors has expanded to cover the gamut of gonzo, from the beautiful (Everhard) to the anti-glamour (Johns). From the utilitarian (Luger) to the dominant (Voyeur). I predict another stellar year for RLD in 2004, as they spread their wings and hone their dominance.

DVSX took to a different route. Alex Ladd is a competent director who shoots some very well crafted gonzo flics. His attention to detail is apparent and by hiring master lensman Yani Z, he ensured that his flics would hit the mark for this journeyman. But when he was smart enough to hire newbie Bryan Xin, DVSX created an internal energy that exploded during the year. Bryan and Alex teamed up to set the standard for DP flix (Double Parked), and to create the only true challenger to Jule's anal standard with their Truly Nice Ass series. Bryan also released the often overlooked Total Babe series, a unique view of beauty cum depravity that transcends anyone else's lame attempts. Although DVSX has had trouble in expanding their stable to other directors, this solid cornerstone will certainly ensure another banner year in 2004.

Private

If RLD and DVSX rode the roller coaster up, Private plummeted down the first hill. They had reached a kind of pinnacle in 2002. Many of my brethren disagree with me on this, but who cares? Woodman sucked. He took gorgeous girls and made them completely mediocre. Adamo and Kovi turned this around in 2002 and rebuilt Private into a megalith. Series like Black Label and Penthouse were incomparable works of beauty. But 2003 saw all of this slip. Instead of riding a good thing, Private inexplicably dropped these stellar lines and fell into a mediocre mix of bad beach movies and gonzo that wasn't. Le Castel's series sucked. Fetish Machine didn't deliver. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

For 2004 Private is attempting to re-create itself again... this time as a contender to the American throne. They certainly have the money, but do they have the wits to play ball with RLD, DVSX and Evil? We'll see, but they will need to rethink their strategies. Policies such as no ATM are not going to go far in the US porn wars!

Metro & Sin City

For the bulk of 2003, both of these studios retained their 2002 statuses. That is to say, they really weren't players. But toward the end of the year, both of them received a serious infusion straight to the main vein. And his name is Skeeter. Skeeter developed the Mayhem line for Sin City and the Fusxion like for Metro. His brand of completely base level depravity is a unique and refreshing wind that is whipping through the landscape. First and foremost, Skeeter is a pervert. A down home, porn watching, pervert. A man after my own heart. His enthusiasm is positively infectious, and these two lines are infused with an energy I haven't seen in ages. Look for these two studios to re-blossom in 2004, kind of a Phoenix from the ashes thing. That is, if they don't fuck it up!

Smash & Sineplex

And speaking of up & cummers, these 2 studios are starting 2004 where RLD & DVSX were in 2003. They are both small, with limited quantity outputs. But both of these studios are
showing promise to begin the rapid rise that so many have taken in the porn world.

Smash has shown flashes of brilliance in their limited lifetime. Legal Skin is easily the crown jewel in their line up, a perfectly produced series of barely legal vids featuring some of the most beautiful girls to grace the porn scene. And they coerce these girls into practicing depravity, all without looking as though they are taking advantage of anyone. Smash has employed some of the better directors on the scene. To wit, Skeeter, Red Ezra and Frank Thring have all added formidable volumes to their lineup. Once these boys settle down and establish some stable titles, they will be a studio to watch.

Sineplex has taken a different, less embellished route. They are creating a lineup of some of the grittiest, nastiest, porn on the market. They have easily monopolized the lesbian market with their Perversions releases. These are so good that they make other studios' releases look like amateur attempts. And now, with Sticky Buns they are posied to play ball in the incredibly competitive anal market. They have hired hot young girls and polished them right. Then they've set them loose like fucking dervishes on a mission. Another studio to really pay attention to.

Platinum X

Now here's a studio that is a bit of a problem for me. In some ways, they are RLD's little step brother, obviously in bed together, but a bit of the underdog. Far too many of their titles focus on the concept of "hard sex" for my taste. What is "hard sex"? As far as I can tell, this is a euphamism for employing a total disrespect for your bed partner. Certainly not my fare of choice (more of this topic in a future article). Directors like Mason and Brandon have produced a slew of these flix. Apparently some folks must like them, but they certainly do nothing for me. Yet, PXP still delivers works from Steve Holmes and Manuel Ferrara that are simply outstanding. These guys may well be the modern contenders for the Europorn crown, picking up where Adamo and Kovi left off. My reactions are mixed to PXP, but I do predict that they will definitely influence 2004.

Zero Tolerance

Zero Tolerance is another up & cummer. I have watched a number of their flix and enjoyed them to some extent. But ZT still needs to learn a few of the lessons that will determine their ultimate viability. First off, ZT doesn't really have a niche. They are creating titles that span the gamut of the gonzo world, without really focusing on any of them. To use a trite quote, they are jacks of all trades, and masters of none. While I find great scenes in each of their releases, I've yet to find a comprehensive volume that is viable from end to end. If these boys can set a direction and stick with it, while keeping up their quality, and avoiding premature bankruptcy, they may indeed become a force. A bit more of a dark horse, but a studio worth watching.

Hustler

Hustler went on a spending spree this year, buying up companies like they were moving around the board in Monopoly. But their best move may well have been in establishing a new wing of the company... H2. While many pundits point to lines like Barely Legal as Hustler's forte, I contend that they are simply product... lifeless product. Their only really interesting series at the onset of 2003 were High Octane and Precious Pink. Why? Because these two lines provided Eurobeauty fans with their only real source of gorgeous imagery in 2003. Perfectly groomed and filmed, these lines were a little lifeless, but for those of us who truly worship the perfect female specimen, they did much to entice. But toward the end of 2003, H2 began to deliver these beautiful ladies coupled with lifelike sexuality. A mix that had been drastically missing. Many have derogatory things to say about Hustler (read that as they have a bad case of Bill Gates/Microsoft syndrome), but I heartily thank them for H2!

Digital Sin

The other company that really kicked things up a notch was Digital Sin. They started the year in typical so what fashion, and produced far less than stellar DVDs. In fact, the only truly unique offerings in their lineup were the masturbation series Screaming Orgasms and She Squirts (where she doesn't). It wasn't that these were great series, they were really the only masturbation vids on the market so they had a lock. But somewhere along the way, DS had the sense to give Jonni Darko a chance to direct a movie, and Anal Trainer was born. AT has to be the most unique and intense series born in 2003. A clever mix of pretty girls, hot sets, wardrobe, plenty of anal toys, and hard anal sex went a long way to filling a void that only Jules had experimented with. But it filled that void in a way that WOAD only hinted at. My hats off to you Jonni Darko, your six volumes of Anal Trainer have become a part of my permanent DVD collection. You have joined the likes of
Jules, Leslie, Everhard and Adamo. Now if DS only has the sense to re-examine it's catalog in order to broom out the old, and make way for more releases in what could be a unique and profitable line.

Vivid

I don't get it! I mean, I truly don't get it. When I go to the show, these guys have the longest line in the place. But I update the weekly release thread, and I know for certain that over 90% of their 2003 releases were hacked up compilations of old crap. Reissued for the 25th time each. What's up with that? If anyone gets this, by all means fill me in. Til then, nuff said.

AnaDia

OK, you knew I had to touch on this one. At the 2003 AVN, I couldn't wait to visit AnaDia. They were a hot shot company with a stable of great directors. But several weeks later, they fired everyone (most of whom fled to RLD) and replaced them with... who? I still don't know. Rather, they just seem to aimlessly wander these days, occasionally releasing some old shit or a Chico Wang flic. What the fuck happened to these guys? Who made this decision? Was it Chris Alexander? Had he been smoking crack? I'm totally at a loss.

Part 1 Wrap Up

Well, I've not mentioned any of the feature companies, since this is not my area of interest (although I still think Wicked rocks with Brad Armstrong and Michael Raven), and I've left off most of the mediocre and wannabe companies as well. I'm bound to have missed someone important, but that's the way with retrospectives. Hopefully you've enjoyed my first installment in this to be continued series. Hopefully I've inspired you to think it through and agree or disagree or anything besides being complacent. You may love me, you may hate me, but at least you'll have an opinion of me, and that energizes me!

Part 2, coming soon...

Really? I got into racing because of Earnhardt, and my dad's always constant rooting for him to win. And surprisingly, I got turned onto Evil Angel by another master, at least in my mind, Joey Silvera. Evil Angel has always been a consistently great studio, just as Earnhardt was a consistently great driver.

My own slightly strange opinion is that 2003 became the year of too much good porn.

Seriously, who has the time or cash to enjoy the constant flow of hardcore goodness that flows out of the valley each month. Not me, that's for sure.

People who enjoy porno today have no idea how good they have it, even compared to just 5 years ago.

Aside from that, I think 2003 is the year of free agent directors.

Who follows companies anymore.

It's all about the directors, and the fan base they establish by creating their own shooting style.

I totally agree, the director is key. But many of the directors do call a studio home, at least for a while. And many studios do entice certain directors into their folds. So I'm not sure you can really separate them that easily.

BTW - A future installment is coming, solely on the topic of directors.

To a certain point and depending upon the agreement / arrangement with the company. In some of the arrangements the company (or studio) do all the post shoot editing, mastering and such to get the product out the door. In these cases it is the combination of director and studio that make the product.

I don't get the vivid thing either and now lump them in with Leisure Time as a rehashing company. Why would anyone get vivid's new releases when they can wait for the numerous compilation tapes to come out and then pick the one that contains the best 3.5 hour mix of crap. Aside from that "annual update" rental, all interest in them gets lost. I guess they're making their money off of porn tourists? (Those who just visit the world of porn and don't live there?)

Maybe people just like celebrities, and vivid serves up the best mockery of hollywood celebs? In other words, if other companies just started doing that same song and dance, but without compromising their product......

The reign of terror of the fucking yuppy is over.
Hopefully Berth will bring Private back where it belongs, on top.

I saw a few stills from Axel Braun's "Cadillac Highway" and it looks very high profile and classy, the way you like it, abc.

Given that 90 percent of my viewing is either Evil or RLD, I have to agree that those two companies dominated in '03. I mean, RLD's sheer output and uneven range of directors meant that their batting average was lower, but they constantly excelled at getting the new girls on camera and onto video shelves faster than anyone else.

Anabolic? Who knows? BUt I may be one of the few here who actually enjoyed some of the weirdness of their more recent titles. There was some dissing of the company done by some of the folks I talked to on the floor. I'd say they have some lost ground to make up, but it looks like they have some exciting stuff in the pipeline.

I'm rooting for PXP, but I'd say the studios to watch in '04 are Sineplex and Evolution.

I still have to check out more from DVSX. But after meeting Constance and Sun at the ADT party, I can say I'm very inclined to do just that
I think they have a really cool corporate image, very friendly and not so intense and hyper-masculine.

See... I knew that was going to happen! How could I forget about Evolution, founded by the almighty Tom Byron. I definitely expect big things from this company 2004, and hopefully without any of the nasty baggage that was attached to Extreme!

I have more to say about Ayb's great post, but the thing that kills me about Vivid is that... once upon a time they made some damn good stuff! Anyone remember when they had Bruce Seven working for them, and Ginger Lynn as a contract star?! Those were Vivid's golden years for sure. I guess they're making their money, and I certainly don't fault the Vivid girls for the good gig they've got, but as a dedicated porn fan, I really don't get it either.

With regard to studios... _I_ still follow studios. Yes, the directors are equally important, but shooting style isn't the end all--be all of a DVD. Part of what makes Evil Angel so blindingly appealing is that I can ALWAYS count on excellent production values. Every time. That's just not the case with other studios.

Although I agree with Ayb about the hit or miss aspects of Platinum X, it's not for the same reasons. The DVD quality of their releases has been intermitten at best. On the other hand, I like the harder edge of porn, unlike Ayb--and it is only rarely the case when the most beautiful of girls are also able to turn in truly dazzling sexual performances. I position myself slightly more on the teeter-totter fulcrum--balancing the model-esque beautiful on one end with the magic of chemistry on the other, and waiting for that rare occasion when I get both at once. The thing is, because of simply who I am, I find women like Julie Night, Ashley Blue, Lauren Phoenix, and Christie FAR more beautiful than the Jenna Jamesons, Anita Blondes, and Nikki Andersons of the world.

That said, my number one studio is easily Evil Angel--no taking it for granted for me. They do their own thing--they seem to operate outside of this "latest craze chasing" that many of the other newer studios are relying on, and between their fabulously dynamic group of directors, they produce all varieties of porn in the gonzo spectrum--Joey Silvera obviously being my number on choice.

Anal Trainer is definitely on my list to take a gander at, but I'd also like to point out the work that Digital Sin has done with the Shane's World "reality porn" this year. Some very interesting and exciting stuff--with a lot of potential.

That's enough for now. :)

Ayb, you basically did a dead-on summation of 2003, IMHO. I haven't watched as widely lately as I did in the past, so I don't have an opinion formed on some companies, but in general, I fully endorse your view.

Hey, how's it going,

I have said it elsewhere around here several times but again we must bow and acknowledge the accomplishments of John Stagliano and Evil Angel. I wholeheartedly agree that they were again #1 this year. It just seemed to go slightly un-noticed though, perhaps because everyone expected them to keep it up and they did.

However, porn in 2003 for me was the year that I realized that the industry is still highly troubled. There are still way too many compilations being made and boxes still intentionally mislead customers and whole entire scenes or anal segments are still accidentally edited out of tapes before they ship to stores, etc., etc., etc. It was the year that I realized that I think some people who work in the industry probably do not share the love for it that so many of us around here do. For instance, in a recent New Machines comp. release they have a picture of Rebecca Lord getting it from Vince Vouyer on the back of the box. That would be fine if the tape were not "Taylor St. Claire Exposed" meaning Ms. Lord and Vouyer are not even in the tape. It's little careless things such as this that still happen and it still surprises me. I just look at half-hearted efforts like that and think, "This is 2004. I thought porn would have this fixed by now."

Such is the way.

Kudos on the great post by the way. I did not agree with everything you had to say, partially because I would not give DVSX as much credit as you, but most of my disagreements were little.

Great post aybesea! I look forward to part 2.

I agree. The biggest mover of the year was RLD, plowing to the front of the pack with tons of releases and an infusion of great talent. Evil Angel still leads, but RLD's gains are truly impressive.

Wanted to say thanks for all the great things aybesea and others have said about Evil Angel.

John works very hard to keep Evil Angel a solid company both business-wise and sex-wise. Knowing that people acknowledge that is a very coolt thing.

That being said, there may be an interesting move happening in the next couple of months by EA. And from reading your 'pornspective' it seems like at least someone out there would like it.

Great job Aybesea!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post and agree with a lot of it! Having been fortunate enough to review a lot of the gonzo porn this year my take is probably as good as any, lol. RLD definitely jumped up to the plate with so many releases and does anyone get the newer girls in a dvd soon than they do and that is a strength I see for them. I like the POV stuff they are shooting and that's thanks for POV director extraordinaire Mike John who does it as good as anyone. Erik Everhard is probably the most enthusiastic fuck I've seen along with Steve Holmes and Manuel Ferrara. Those three guys have such fun in their scenes and bring a raw passion that few others can match. Evil Angel is just what you said they are, The Gold Standard and my interests with them lie mainly with Jules and Christoph who direct the anal and big breast lines I so like watching. DVSX is a studio I really like mainly because their dvds look so good, how they are filmed I don't notice a lot of shadows and the film just looks beautiful for the most part. Bryan Xin has really hit it big with the Truly Nice lines, the Tits and Ass series are two I thoroughly enjoy and Double Parked has been another jewel. I defy anyone to find a better passionate lesbian scene that was shot in the first Total Babe, no toys and and the action would have suffered if one had been brought in. Platinum X does remind me a lot of RLD and that's fine as I get to see more of the girls I love in a different scene and I've enjoyed lots of their titles and know I will continue to do so. Zero Tolerance I've enjoyed with their hard pounding action with the very funny Mike Quasar always worth checking out in their behind the scenes. The Blow Job Sandwich line has been pretty good and Ass Cleavage is another line I always look forward to checking out. I acknowledged in another thread that my reviews have tended to be more on the positive side and these studios I've talked about are a main reason why. They shoot my style of porn and I look forward every time to checking out their new releases as there is usually something in every scene I can get off to. Now some lines I don't like as much, the all ethnic lines for one example though some beautiful girls make them well worth checking out, Sabrine Maui, Katsumi, Candace Jackson, Bambi Bliss are all girls I like so I will watch them. So my take on porn 2003 is that it was a very good year and I look forward to checking out more hot girls in 2004 from these studios and from others!! I also think Evolution and Tom Byron are in for a very big year, Sodomy Sandwiches was easily one of my favorites from last year along with the two No Cum Dodging Allowed's. So I look forward to watching a lot more as Evolution truly gives you your money's worth with the two discs with the extras being well worth checking out. I've enjoyed watching Tom shoot the girls doing all sorts of things!! I have a feeling we've seen nothing yet!!

see ya

Hey, how's it going,

On the Evolution Erotica front:

I honestly haven't seen much of their product yet but the one I did see was "Teen Meat #1" from Timothy Tyler Thomas and I wrote a very in-depth review of it that is surely in the archives of this forum. I was quite blown away by it, with great scenes from the big 3 of Amber Rain, Haley, and Holly Day. I am waiting on a cast like that again in the new installments, with girls like Jennifer Luv, Aspen Stevens, or Katin being three suggestins. However, Tom Byron did direct the best gonzo tape I ever saw "Whack Attack #9" so I am kind of expecting Evolution to be one of those companies in 2004 that just blows up. Time will tell.

Great pornspective and am in total agreement with almost everything that has been said in this forum. One company which was not mentioned is West Coast. I may not think these guys are doing porn defining work, but the sheer numbers and popularity of their lines lead me to believe that these guys are players to be taken seriously. With Jake Steed's glory days gone and the tokenism some companies have shown in developing major black lines, these guys are quietly eating up a lot of my budgetary cash. So kudos to a job well done and the continuation of what amounts to a small empire of serious black talent. Props also go out to Justin Slayer and his work at Exquisite-2004 looks good if this past year is any indication.

After thinking about this, I think five things really define porn in 2003.

1. Directors changing studios.
2. Increase in number of premium titles released.
3. Increase in number of IR titles.
4. Increase in number of cum eating titles.
5. ADT (fan feedback) becomes a major industry influence.

Number five is the one that really leaps out at me. How many movies released this year, were influenced by forum post here at ADT.

When it gets to the point where specific types of scenes or specific performers appear in a movie, simply because
of being requested here on the board, we just have to step back and count ourselves lucky that the industry is so fan oriented.

There's no law forcing directors, owners, and performers to read and/or post here.

They do it out of their own dime and time.

It really is amazing.

I contend that only whilst directors, owners and performers regard ADT posters as representative of the demographic within which they expect their product to sell will they take notice. As has been noted elsewhere, the tastes of the typical ADT poster are not those of the typical porn viewer with wishy washy (my slightly biased term is that ) features underrepresented relative to wall-to-wall fuck flicks. This in itself is no bad thing but I think it fair to reflect that the aspect and the influence of ADT (forums) has skewed more toward one side of the market than the other. In other words my bionic poultry-faced friend, ask Vivid what affect ADT posters have had on their latest foray into the world of stultifying porn boredom (okay, my bias again) and I think you'll find it's not a great deal.

I'm flattered, to say the least. Thank you, aybesea. What more can I say? It was a pleasure to meet you at the convention this year. Thanks for inviting me to the ADT party. I'm glad I decided to go. Thanks to whoever mixed my screwdrivers. I didn't know you could actually set fire to orange juice.
Ditto what I said above to aybesea. Thanks so much for the compliments, bono-ONE. Again, I'm at a loss for words. It was great to meet you at the convention as well.

Seeing all this love being passed around makes me sadder and sadder I didn't contact someone before coming out to Vegas. Sounds like you guys might've been alright to meet in person or party with. Maybe I would've stood out a little, but I'm sure none of you would hold that against me...would you?

Great post, btw, aybesea. I don't think it comes as any surprise that you echo a lot of other posters sentiments where it concerns the year 2003 and the adult entertainment industry including my own. I like PXP more than you apparently, but I won't hold that against you.

Also, I told you my new avatar would r hex x0r your b hex x0rz.

Interesting, biased indeed and very Americanocentric (apart from the brief mention of Private). I thought you were into Marc Dorcel stuff at one stage?

There is great porn being made by European studios, in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy...

I am sure I speak for everyone at Platinum X Pictures when I say that we are very grateful for all the support we have received in our first year in business.
The DVD quality will continue to improve and all of us have learned a lot about producing/directing.
Look for some good releases from us this year.
Thanks!

If these boys can set a direction and stick with it, while keeping up their quality, and avoiding premature bankruptcy, they may indeed become a force."

Excuse me? We're creating titles that span the gamut of the gonzo world? That's our goal. RLD has a series called "One on One". Talk about splitting hairs. One girl and one guy used to be called "Porn". Apparently now it's a sub-genre, a fetish of some kind. I'm not bagging on Red Light at all. I'm simply pointing out that they also "run the gamut of the gonzo world" Most gonzo companies are running the gamut of the Gonzo world. That's why we're in business.

As far as Zero Tolerance avoiding "premature bankruptcy", your statement implies that there will be a timely occasion for us to declare bankruptcy. News Flash: We're doing quite well. Bankruptcy is pretty far down the list of concerns of the company at this time.

I have to say I agree with Quaze on being disappointed that there are SO many 'niche' series' and titles being made.

It's cool to be able to find movies that have what you want in them, but when it becomes difficult to find a movie that's just about having some good old-fashionised sex and not about quantitative setups and statistics, I have to wonder if people are forgetting that it used to be about just having fun while fucking. Just my opinion.

I mean, I love Weapons of Ass Destruction and Anal Trainer and Euro Hardball as much as most men, and probably more than some men, but sometimes I just want to see something a little less specific.
Variety is the spice of life.

I will have to disagree. For me at least, I'd rather buy a movie that gives me what I want in every scene, instead of a movie that only has one scene with what I'm looking for.

Niche and Mainstream porn are the future, with not much else in between.

Or I could just be completely full of shit....

Hey Joey, you are right... my post is very Americanocentric indeed. But not because I've lost my love for great Europorn, but rather because of the fact that the European companies don't seem to want (or are unable to) penetrate the American market.

Fact is that it is extremely difficult to procure current Europorn here in America. Between the NTSC/PAL issues and the prohibitive costs involved in ordering, about the only Europorn that is readily available here in the States is Private and the Wicked releases of the Dorcel stuff. I addressed Private in the article. And Wicked only released a paltry sampling of Dorcel titles this year.

Too bad really, cause I definitely love beautiful porn.

Hey Quaze, sorry you took such offense to my article. The funny thing is that when I wrote it, I really intended my mention of ZT to be a compliment. Apparently you didn't see it that way. So, if you don't mind, let me address the two points that you have taken issue with, simply to let you know where I'm coming from.

Let me start with the bankruptcy comment. It isn't rooted in some dark prediction or anything dramatic. It is really just a matter of economics. In 2003, the number of Gonzo companies increased dramatically. The number of Gonzo discs that hit the market was huge compared to 2002. All of this represents a massive increase in supply to the gonzo consumer. Conversely, while the demand from consumers may have increased, the difference from 2002 wasn't nearly large enough to absorb the new supply levels that were offered up.

How do I figure this? Simple... the addition of RLD alone, with its huge number of titles allows me to easily gauge the supply (besides, as you know I maintain the release thread and can see how many new titles/studios are around). But the number of posts here at ADT, the number of fans at AEE, etc. don't point out nearly as dramatic a rise in consumer levels.

So what does all of this mean? Economics tells us that one of two things will happen (or a combination of the two).

1) If consumers see all gonzo product as being created equal, they will simply buy the cheapest thing out there. This is the Leisure Time mentality. I personally don't subscribe to this line of thinking, but there are those who do. In any case, a small upstart studio is not in a good position to win this battle. Besides, your product is far too high quality to succeed in this kind of marketing.

2) If consumers see differentiation in the gonzo products, they will purchase the titles that represent the greatest perceived value for them. This is exactly what I believe is happening, and this is where my other thought comes into play.

Two years ago, simply putting gonzo on DVD was enough to guarantee that it would sell. There was so little stuff out there that you were assured of selling DVDs.

One year ago, it was enough to make sure that there were at least a couple of good scenes on DVD. As long as guys could get off from the DVD, life was good.

But not any more. With the increase in competition, consumers now demand consistently high levels of not only good scenes, but scenes that tickle their fancy. The huge proliferation in niche titles (anal only, dp only, internal only, etc) tells you that there are markets for these kinds of gonzo, and that they are being served. Success of these series tells you that they sell. And the selling of these series tells you that consumers want to be able to specify their desired kink at the time of purchase. Not only that, but since there are many studios making each of these micro lines, consumers will only purchase those that represent the best of breed (at least if prices are comparable).

So, my comments regarding ZT were meant to reflect this. I respect your company and truly enjoyed talking with you at the show. I wish you nothing but success. I simply observed that you have not yet established a lineup of series with a strong affinity to various niches in the market, and that I hoped you would do so soon in order to be competitive in a very heavily supplied market. If I hadn't genuinely respected ZT, I would not have even mentioned them in the article.

You may or may not agree with me on my assessment. That's cool by me. But hopefully you can see that I wasn't attacking you or your company. I'm genuinely sorry if you perceived it that way. But I still think that my assessment holds merit and bears scrutiny.

Actually, I didn't take offense necessarily and you're completely entitled to your opinion so I apologize if my post seemed hostile. It really wasn't meant to be. Sometimes it's frustrating trying to strike a balance between not being like every other company out there while still catering to the discerning fan who is almost demanding custom-made porn nowadays.

THAT is why Tricia is the smartest woman in porn! Remember the good ol' days when we used to shoot movies with sex in them and we called it "porn"? I agree with you. I think that the immediacy of the internet has caused us (some of us) to lose spontaneous moments in our movies and approach our job almost clinically. While it may result in carefully produced niche titles, I don't necessarily think it results in consistently good entertainment.
One of the first "gonzos" I ever watched was of course a Stagliano movie; Buttman goes to Rio...at least I think that's what it was called. It was about 12 years ago. My point is that this particular movie had variety. Some of the movie tickled my fancy, some of it did not but overall I thought it was awesome because there was at least some anticipation and curiosity of what was coming next. My feeling is that we're now on course for a company to put out an anal title called "Girls getting fucked in the ass hard on a sofa in North Hollywood and gaping 20 times, not 19 times, not 21 times but 20 times. Volume 3" .
Then again, what the hell do I know?

Great point Tricia and Mike Quasar. The whole niche/fetish seems to be a bit of an overblown fad now. Maybe it's just me and I don't have any real fetish with my porn... I enjoy the variety. Just give me hot chicks having hot sex!

I'm one of those porn viewers who hopes that the trend toward niche markets doesn't go any further than it has already. What I've noticed when the title promises the same thing in every scene is that that the result can be the unexpected: the sex is boring. And now you have a 2 hour, 20 minutes of the same boring stuff, chapter after chapter. Sure, you'll get your gapes, your double penetrations, your two female/one male scenes or whatever, like you wanted, but what gets left out? Some variety, some spice, something different in Scene 5 that wasn't in Scene 1.

That's fine by me if RLD does this, but for every other studio to follow suit would be a disaster. There are only so many niches out there, unless they really start splitting hairs for sub-niches like offering interracial double penetrations with new talent, where you have guarenteed female squirting in every scene, but no tattoos or breast implants allowed.

My other pet concern is the catering to fan requests, which on the surface seems like a good idea. But, do studios realize that only a couple hundred to a thousand people log on to this message board everyday (usually there are 50-90 reading at any one time). That's only a small percentage of the total number of porn viewers out there. Having the studios/directors focusing on such a small slice of the porn viewing public sounds way too narrow.

Sir Noel mentioned about Vivid/ Wicked et al, and them not caring too much about ADT. I would think they get most of their customers from either cable/hotel viewers, and also from the Adam and Eve catalogs that are sent out to thousands of households across the US. I know I've gotten these without asking, but once you're on their mailing list, you're on for a long time, and nearly all that they sell are compilation and feature films, not too much in the way of gonzo. Why cater to ADT'ers, when you can reach way more people in the mail?

For what it's worth, I've liked what I've seen from Zero Tolerance and PXP, as much as anything from Evil Angel. Frankly, I haven't watched anything from RLD, because I don't want the same thing in every damn scene.

Too bad you didn't take advantage of Dorcelshop's recent "buy one choose one free of equal value" holiday sale. Me I got "Alexia & Cie" and "Une nuit au bordel". Hopefully they'll do another similar sale in August.

My advice : check out the international shopping forum regularly.

It's quite interesting to consider the abundance of gonzo porn and this drive toward ever more more refined niches in the context of one another. I think clearly as the market has increased in competitiveness with, as Aybesea himself points out, more companies releasing more titles it is inevitable that everyone is out to find something that differentiates their product from their competitors product, or at the very least makes the line seem less generic. Clearly also, to support so very many titles the market must be fairly large and in a large market you really don't need your film to appeal to everyone; if your film only appeals to a small percentage of the porn buying public, but is almost without peer in its individual niche, you are onto a winner.
Although I agree with much of what you wrote my concerns lay in the opposite direction.
One of the great things about ADT or rogreviews or iafd or cavr is that they link people with information with which to make a value judgement of what to buy. The more people actually choose to invest time and effort in making that decision the better for all of us; we all benefit in a competitive market in which quality of product is rewarded. Unfortunately I suspect that the porn marketplace exhibits similar failings to the video games marketplace where quality of product sells but often no more than quality of marketing or, and this is the real killer, sheer weight of numbers. For example, one element of RLDs strategy might well be to cover every niche but as a direct result when you go to buy a film you are also confronted by such a huge array of their titles that (for the casual buyer who walks in with little prior knowledge) there has to be a greater possibility you'll end up with one of their films (especially, I suppose, if you're blind and just reach out and grab one) and to them it doesn't really matter which, they've made a sale. Now I'm not for one moment knocking RLDs output here, just pointing out that if I produced one or two knockout films - let us pretend the best two pornos ever made - I'll still lose out by the fact that my two lonely little titles will get lost in the sea of RLD stuff.
So this is my worry, that just like video games, the deluge of mediocrity can win out simply because it is a deluge and most buyers can no longer see the wood for the trees. In this respect the involvement of those within the industry at ADT seems important to me. You are correct to assert that this forum constitutes only a small percentage of the porn viewing public; let me go on to assert that this is no bad thing (for you and me). Those that do post here, especially those that prod the companies the hardest, are passionate and knowledgeable about their pornography and I'd much rather industry figures listen to those consumers than the fella who picks up the nicest boxcover or falls for the sweetest false promises.

I also actually don't see the narrowness of ADT forums as a particular problem. To go back to the gaming analogy, gaming forums tend to be dominated by hardcore gamers who play certain types of games to a greater degree than the casual gamer. This is no different here, hardcore hardcore fans tend to watch certain types of hardcore more than the casual hardcore fan and there is no way of getting round that. What I think you end up with is an environment where ADT feedback is useful for some types of product for some studios but not for other types of product for other studios. It could perhaps further be argued that if your product tends to appeal more to the casual porn fan and is perhaps even aimed at such then feedback is maybe not such an important thing to you anyway?

To: Aybesea - I agree with most of what you say - however, I have to strongly disagree with one thing. That is about Sineplex' "Perversions" series having a monopoly on the lesbian market. (maybe they do - maybe it's selling the best, what do I know?) That series could be great but way to many toys, not enough kissing, undressing, teasing, and oral. But that's not even the biggest problem - You can clearly hear the director's voice throughout. Who wants to hear the director say, "stick it back in", et al when you're watching a girl/girl movie - or any movie for that matter? Anyway, my two cents.
Message to Mike Quasar - if it makes you feel any better - as far as "niches" go - you have made the ULTIMATE oral series in "Blow Me Sandwich". I had always wished SOMEONE would make a series like this. One of those most erotic things to watch in porn is two sexy girls giving oral at the same time. I especially like how you have the strip scene FIRST.
Thanks man! Keep up the good work :-)

You guys are speaking my language. This is why half the DVDs I buy are Joey Silvera flicks,

The only "niche" I'm really addicted to is the blowjob niche: "Feeding Frenzy," etc. I find it really frustrating when fans harp on and on about the primary importance of acts so far down the scale of specificity that they start sounding like some wine connoisseur describing the temperature of the breeze grazing the vineyard where their favorite vinatge comes from.

Where will it all end? Heel-Grabbing Teenage DP Nostril Sluts ?
