I think this is good food for thought in terms of how porn should evolve in the future as far as a progressive business model goes. Some venturing minds out there need to come up with the porn model of RtB and CwF.

It's only a matter of time. The industry needs to evolve if it wants to stay afloat, long-term.

Well the sooner it does it and in a less reactionary way the more of a trend it could set. For instance when I think of a RtB angle one thing that comes to mind is that paying patrons would be allowed to tip the performer after a scene has come out. Bitcoin has a potential role to play in this as that is very much geared towards being a use based currency. You could have a model where certain commenters in a addition to complementing the performer could live a tip in the comments. This would also incentivise performers to get their fans to leave a tip as well.

They have done this. It's basically the reason that cam shows/cam girls work as well as they do. I've said this on here before, but the truth of the matter is that porn as we know it (as in prepackaged scenes and/or feature movies) will basically primarily exist in the future as advertising for personal services that the girls will offer (be it webcam shows, custom videos, private chats, or escorting).

I agree that that is the future to some degree. In essence payment is becoming more direct which is a good thing. However I do think that there could be production companies in the future so long as they come up with good incentives to make people pay. For instance the patreon model that you see today could be part of the future. Bitcoin and crypto currency will also play a role in structuring the biz model of the future.

The closest were going to see in porn to the patreon model is the single performer and/or single director sites that we already have right now. Which, to be honest, is actually pretty close.

Pretty soon, I think we'll see some enterprising young (or not-so-young) soul come up with a distribution model innovation that will shake up the industry. The Web 2.0 revolution was the last big shake-up. We're long overdue for another one.
Web 2.0 made porn more accessible to customers through the power of streaming video, but that also encouraged piracy and weakened the production houses that actually make the content. Something needs to be done to fix that imbalance, and I'm confident that the next big innovation will make strides toward doing that.
Piracy is the real problem; specifically, tube sites are stealing massive amounts of revenue from the production houses that own the content. There needs to be a new business model that renders tube sites irrelevant. I believe that business model is coming in the next 2-3 years.

^Actually if you watched the above video I posted then piracy really should not be a problem. The point is that in a market world that is more 'libertarian' competing with free should simply be something that is non-controversial. To your second point, essentially all you have to do is look at things like 3D printing. That is revolutionizing low overhead costs so production companies should not have all that much to complain about once they know how to use all these new processes. Also the crypto currency/Block Chain revolution will have a major say.
I'm of the view that there should be a post IP/copyright all in one tube site that producers and performers can go to to connect with fans and give them a reason to buy or tip. For instance you could have a system where on this tube site you can tip the performers for a good scene and a percentage of the tip goes to producers. This could also be how you get someone to become a patron on the specific porn site. If you want to tip a performer you have to join(be it for a day or the full package year). Otherwise it should be F2P with perhaps downscaled viewing options.
*typo for my previous post. I wrote I don't agree it is the future*

Finally got around to watching the little You Tube video and here are my thoughts.
1-Trent fucked his label company over by giving away free songs that his label company had probably already paid him to produce and which could easily have been a huge financial disaster for them.
2-All of his ideas were directed toward to an already converted group of people since all of his gimmicks were done at the places where he sang so the people there were paying fans.
3-The CD changed color when it is warmed in the player is a dumb gimmick because to actually see the change in color means you have to stop playing the Cd and look at it. that and most people convert CD to a digital format to carry on their ipod, mp3 player or smart phones.
4-His 75$ for a deluxe set and 300$ for the extra deluxe with signed material was all directed at his existing fans so no one looking to discover a new band bothered with those options.
None of these above things can work for porn. In fact none of them can work in getting new people interested in your product since they are all targeted at the converted. The problem facing the porn industry is that people don't want to pay for it and even if they were to get an offer to meet their favorite performer for free would not mean that they will then go out and now pay for the free porn they have been using to get off. The problem facing the porn industry is not much different than the one facing the music industry. There are plenty of illegal download music sites and that is at a time when iTunes as well as plenty of other music download sites offers songs for less than 2$. The main difference is that there are millions of people buying music to offset the millions who don't and therefore producers still make money. The porn industry does not have the same number of people to play with and therefore the few that pay can't off-set the millions who don't and you have the current and sadly near future reality of the porn industry.

^To take on your points
1)I don't care for record companies and don't see them lasting beyond another generation. 2) Porn has its converted as well and you have things like conventions and other meet and greet areas to execute the CwF RtB model. 4)Nothing wrong with shoring up existing indentured fans. Look at someone like Mimefreak and his 'crew', they represent a fairly solid fan base.
The problems you are taking about are really tied to perpetual profit motive which should be done away with imo. You should not rely on a perpetual stable of new buyers. When talking about the music industry the non performing class are the ones being effected adversely whereas numerous indy-smaller scale level performers are doing just fine with the qualitative fan base that they do have. There are numerous examples of this in the punk and metal subculture as a good example. One band that I know of essentially has no problem with their music being torrented and relies on a hardcore fan base to pay out not pay up. Needless to say they have some qualitative buyers that more then keep them afloat.
In the future musical and sexual entertainment will not be channeled from a conglomerate class which is a good thing in my book. I think that paying for things like porn and other things will take on more of a use value kind of approach. There will be less of a separation between performers and production which ultimately means more creative autonomy even if secondary and tertiary revenue dries up.

^You don't care about record companies so because of that you think they need to go. You do understand that you render your opinion null and void when you say things like that. If there wasn't a music industry then there would be little to no music being produced. You do understand that to book a recording studio is a very expensive thing and most singers can't afford to do it on their own unless they already are established. I know many record labels have screwed singers and bands over the years but the same could be said of the manager of those singer and bands and an argument could be made that the manager was by far the worst offender. How many record labels have poured tons of money on artist to then see their investment pissed down the road when those artist put out a piece of crap?
You could have a porn convention every week and all it would do is kill the industry even faster because all the studios would lose money by paying booth fees to those convention and still see that the vast majority of the porn being watched on the net is done on tube and torrent sites. Let me ask you a question. How much do you spend on average on porn per month? I know that I spend more than 30$ and it can go as high as 100$ if I join certain sites or buy movies. It's a completely different story when it comes to music because I don't spend more than 30$ a year on it in large part because I can't stand the vast majority of what is being made these days and I already bought most of what was done in the past.
The following phrase caught my eye and makes me think that you don't understand on businesses work. "The problems you are taking about are really tied to perpetual profit motive which should be done away with imo". All businesses (even the non-profit ones) need to keep making money to stay alive otherwise they die. Every company needs to make more money than the prior year because the cost to make the same amount goes up every year. If a company only breaks even each year than they will sooner or later go out of business because all companies need to make a certain profit to off-set a bad year or an unexpected expense. Porn is just like that except that where they once made huge amounts of profits. They now make significantly less and some are at the level where the mostly break even. If those break even companies can't find a new source or make sure that their existing source doesn't give them a better return than they will go out of business just like every dead studio that was a powerhouse 5 years ago. Those new sources can't be people attending a convention because the guy paying 50% bucks to get his picture taken with a performer can still go home and watch all her movies on a tube or torrent site and the money he paid that performer means fuck all to the studios because they aren't making any money from those conventions unless the guys who attend buy their movies.

▲Well pat to understand where I am coming from it helps to know that I am coming from a libertarian, mutualist, distributist direction. Needless to say I believe you can have a music market without wealth concentrated record companies. My entire idea of F2P porn is based on a new form of political economy which I believe is developing before our eyes.
As far as tube sites, torrents and file sharing go I see this as a manifestation of free flowing information. Just as the printing press changed the game in the past the internet is creating even less information scarcity. There are musical acts that are not just accepting torrents and file sharing but taking part in it. The successful porn producers of the future will be the ones who do what I am suggesting.
Lastly I know plenty about profits. I'm not suggesting that they should not exist as such as much as I am saying the maximizing motive should not be pursued. Trying to get pay up money from hypothetical buyers and customers for example. As to the new sources I've already gone over new ways of bringing in $. One option I would emphasize would be a standard tube site that is given copyright amnesty as a means for performers and producers to connect with fans. The fact is the old enclosed pay up system is drying up as file sharing, tube siteing, password sharing and access diving intensifies as future generations become more internet sophisticated. Like it or not the future is more voluntary patron pay out bases then the dying system that currently exists.

^Well Maxx. If your idea of a business plan for porn comes to fruition than I am pretty sure that the industry will not need it because there will no longer be an industry. In fact if you applied any of the ideas talked about by Michael Masnick in that You Tube video to any enterprise then it too would no longer need to worry about it's future because it would be a dead. I love it when people use one single example to come up with an all encompassing concept and try to apply it where it's obvious that it can't work. The perfect example is that Trent Reznor who was the inspiration for that concept has chosen to go back to the music industry he somehow disliked because he sees that the benefits outweigh the negatives.

^Well I do partly agree with you that business as we have known it is coming to an end. However there is still room for business in world that is more distributist. The thing to keep in mind with porn is that it has always been an outsider entity that has never gained friends in political law making channels. It will never be the film or music industry so the sooner some enlightened venturers go down the road that I am describing the more rewarded they will be while the old models die off trying to preserve a copyright world that has no future. The Masnick video is not THE model to follow but one to consider. As to Rez, yes he went back to what is familiar to him, but there are many up and coming acts that are modeling themselves on a post copyright future based more on paying out then paying up.
