I've finally finished a new and updated list of Golden Age DVDs and felt it deserved a new posting. This list is meant to include all adult films made between 1972 and 1984 (the Golden Age of Porn) that have made it to DVD. As with the previous list, the films are here because of the date they were produced not the quality, so be warned there are some bad movies mixed in with the good. Just wondering about the edit lists after reading the Golden Age commentary thread. Is Easy censored or not?

astroknight - Easy appears to have been edited but I'm not sure, that's why it's not listed as such. I also believe that 8 to 4 and Girls in Blue have been edited, but again I'm not positive. I have seen a bunch of classics over the years but some I'm seeing for the first time on DVD. Until someone can verify them from their own knowledge, I'll leave them listed as complete. Greybeard, blake_fan, or anyone else with knowledge of classics, can you help?

I am as stumped as you guys.

None of my sources give any indication as to EASY or 8 TO 4 needing editing, so my assumption is they haven't been unless I hear otherwise.

By the way, 8 TO 4 is an outstanding flick! I haven't seen EASY yet.

I just saw another outstanding Golden Age Classic -- WANDA WHIPS WALL STREET. GREAT movie! Unfortunately, it was on VHS.

Tonight, we are serving up SATISFIERS OF ALPHA BLUE. We have never seen it before, and it is currently only available on... VHS.

But what else are we gonna do?! All my wife and I are interested in are the Classics, and the artsie Blake-type stuff. So we are not the typical porn consumers. And 99.999% of the products the studios currently release, we are never going to watch. So we watch everything we can on DVD, but find ourselves having to continually retreat to VHS.

Jim Holliday says it is censored, and his word is good enough for me. See the commentary thread for more details.

I still think Easy is worth buying despite the cuts and NuTech should be congratulated for a sensational picture transfer. Usually I wouldn’t keep any censored DVDs in my collection, but I’ll make an exception in this case.

Black Coffee,

Every Woman Has a Fantasy –parts 1& 2 have been heavily censored on both DVD and VHS. The cuts were discussed previously in this forum and on RAME.

I believe the current release of Café Flesh on DVD & VHS is missing an entire scene. I snipped this information from the archives of Luke Ford’s site (remember him?), where he interviews a certain Martin Brimmer from VCA about their cowardly self-censorship:

Brimmer: "...I was one who sat there for a year after Russell [Hampshire] went to jail, to review Russ's stock [VCA] in 1993. We had our list of seven deadly sins - coercion aka rape, bestiality, urination, defecation, S-M, underage inferences, violence with sex… If you're doing a Miami Vice rip off about a gun battle in the marina, that's fine so long as people aren't fucking in the middle of it.

"I wrote up a report on each film. If there was objectionable content, I made a note of the time code and what the content was. Then the judgement was made within VCA whether that scene should be excised or not.

"We were reactionary. There are some films we were too quick to cut... Such as a couple of minutes out of Café Flesh where Max is being dragged out of the cafe to be killed. And there was nothing wrong with that…

"But when you start getting back into rape scenarios, urination… You are crossing into the lines that get people in jail."

Maybe Wit could shed some light on this. I find it difficult to believe that the footage no longer exists.

Added edited to Easy and Every Woman Has A Fantasy . It just makes me sad. I'm holding off on Cafe Flesh though. Call it wishful thinking.

Ah the Golden Age classics, my favourite movies...

There is a scene in EASY that is likely to be a candidate for editing these days: Georgina Spelvin visits Jessie St. James and suddenly attacks her and forces her into having sex.
I just got this DVD, so I will check if it misses anything my VHS copy does have.

8 TO 4 is less likely to be edited, though the final scene has Lee Caroll in bondage gear lightly dominating (I think) Hershel Savage.

Unless you found a great source your version of Satisfiers is likely to be scensored: the original contains a fisting as well as a golden shower...

Peter -- welcome to ADT! Your reputation (and all your hard work on the database, etc.) precedes you! Much of what we have available in the way of data on the Golden Age of Porn is due to your hard work and dedication! You will find a number of us here who love the Golden Age stuff, and hate the way the "prior restraint" political climate in the US has forced many of the best titles to be edited!

Again, welcome to the group -- we know your wealth of knowledge and experience are much needed here and very much appreciated!

Peter,

I mentioned in another thread that we needed someone with your knowledge to confirm any suspected censorship cuts. As greybeard said, your contribution here will be welcomed by everybody who cares about the classics.

The scene you described is definitely on the DVD. The major question mark is over the opening scene between Jessie St. James and Dan Howard, which contains several clumsy edits.

I was just watching my copy of Desires Within Young Girls from caballero and while comparing the scenes with the ones listed on the iafd it appears that the second scene with Annette Haven and John Seeman is missing from my copy. Could this be another edited version?

I still am bothered by tendinitis in my wrists (but it's getting better slowly) so I can not be online as much as I would like.

I will try to check ADT more than I have in the past...

I've watched Desires Within Young Girls in both its DVD and VHS formats and u r right, the Annette/John Seeman scene is not on the DVD version. my VHS, which is an 80's copy, has that scene but not the Clair Dia/John Leslie one. so what's the deal Caballero? why cant we have the full version on both formats???

I've been wondering, what exactly does EDITED mean?

What was on the original copy, that can not be shown today?

In today's porn, almost anything goes, and they are not edited.
[Is it urine-play? If that is it, why would it have to be edited, a lot of DVDs have that in them now. Or is it the idea of forced sex? If that is it, look at Max Hardcore, his stuff isn't edited, (or is it?) and he has probably done far worse (though I know it is an act) than what could have been done back then.]

Please don't think of me as ignorant, it's just that I've been wanted to check out several classics. But I hate buying edited DVDs and since I'm only 21, I have never seen any classics.

Actually Max Hardcore's stuff is heavily edited!
Living in Europe I recently watched some of his stuff and it's full of gold showers (pissing in the girls faces and mouths to be exact) and in some scenes fisting.
This is not shown in the US versions...

Different "strokes" for different folks (or editors), I guess. Both scenes involve older men having sex with supposedly very "Young Girls" -- perhaps too young for current political tastes. The John Seeman/Annette Haven scene depicts John, as the family chauffer, having sex in and on the limo in which he drives Annette home from her exclusive "girls' school." Don't know, but the dialog may have referred to her age as being younger than 18. Definitely a cue to "play it safe" under the prevailing political climate. Same sort of thing with the John Leslie/Claire Dia scene -- John's the "older guy" initiating Clair (if I remember correctly) into sex. This scene is still in many copies of the film, where the earlier, Seeman/Haven, scene has been missing for some time.

BIGmike: Different studios take different degrees of chances with the stuff they release. Some edit more things than others, either because they have more or less "guts," or they have more or less to lose if they're indicted/prosecuted. VCA, for example, usually plays it safe, although they _have_ partially restored scenes that have previously been completely eliminated. The "Barbara Broadcast" DVD, for instance, now has an edited version of the long-missing C.J. Laing "pissing" scene, just before her coupling with Wade Nichols in the kitchen. It's edited so that you don't actually see the stream of urine leaving her crotch, but definitely get the idea of what she's doing. On the other hand, VCA went to some lengths to edit the "Every Woman Has a Fantasy 2" DVD to eliminate some very mild bondage/s&m stuff (the Lois Ayres/John Leslie limousine scene is shortened severely), and in the same film, edited the stairway scene between Leslie and Keli Richards so that John gets only three fingers into Keli instead of four -- hardly a "fisting," but they cut it anyway! Do some searches on "edited" and "classics" here, and you'll find lots of discussion about this topic.

You can add edited to Girls in Blue Parts 1 & 2. I never saw the original films Little Girls Blue or Little Girls Blue 2 but on the DVD the first one lasts for 57 minutes, much shorter than the original and one scene is missing and one is truncated. The second one lasts for one hour which is also much shorter than the original. I was unable to find a list of scenes for the original of that film but it appeared that there were cuts towards the end of the film.

Thanks, Flash. I actually read all of your previous VCX reviews for inspiration before writing my own. I really like the format you've been using.

I had most of my Sex World review written when yours went up (you beat me by a couple of days, dangit ), and it was fun to see that we came to many of the same conclusions independently, even if our overall ratings differed. I'm hoping to review some more classics over the coming months; it's my husband's favorite genre.

I recently received an e-mail requesting recommendations for high quality adult movies which (a) contain no condom use and (b) are presented in anamorphic widescreen. One title of interest that was specifically mentioned was Insatiable. I haven't seen Insatiable myself, but I have the distinct impression (based on the trailer) that the DVD version is not in widescreen. Does anyone here know what aspect ratio that movie was originally filmed in, and if it has been altered to a full screen presentation, how much does that harm its appearance?

Thank you for the post, YogaGrrl! It's appreciated.

As always seems to be the case in my life, I came across the answer on my own shorly after posing the question. It seems that although Insatiable was filmed in widescreen (most likely 1.66:1) it, like Misty, was mostly unharmed by the transfer. Since no original aspect version of it (or any other classic) is likely to come out anytime soon I've gone ahead and ordered it. I've seen it already so I know it's a definite collectible.

It's totally depressing that so many of the classics have been reformatted in a noticeable way and/or had scenes cut out.

Does anybody have a date when classics started being shot in full screen? That way I'd know that the DVDs are "okay" in that respect. (I don't have a thing for widescreen per se, rather keeping the original aspect. Altering a movie filmed in full screen to make it widescreen is even worse than the reverse.)

Are there any foreign language movies that actually have English subtitles - rather than being dubbed? I was astonished to find that there were some that *did* have subtitles - but that, given that, English was never one of the languages. I can't stand dubbing. It's just as bad as reformatting and censorship.

FWIW, in addition to owning Misty Beethoven, and now having ordered Insatiable, I've also got the modern Dark Angels on order. Various reviews, here and elsewhere, indicate that it, too, fits my criteria.

Now - if only there were a high quality, well scripted / acted / photographed anamorphic widescreen feature (that, if foreign, had English subtitles), had no condom use, *and* which had good sex scenes. I'm probably dreaming. Maybe I should check back in 20 years. <grin>

Many of the adult films that were made to be shown in adult theaters were filmed in widescreen, often in the 1.66:1 or 1.77:1 ratio. This faded with the advent of adult films on video tape, around the time of Vivid's beginnings.
Some films from that time were shot in 1.33:1 for the theaters though, look for cropping on the beginning or end credits as an easy sign or the framing to be constantly off.
Many of the films that I have seen that were widescreen, for the creation of the full screen version it appears that just the center of the film was used for the new print cropping off the very far right and left sides. This stinks because then it looks like the framing is off and makes it appear like the film was poorly shot.
I assume that most of the original widescreen prints have been lost/destroyed over the years as film has to be carefully kept to keep it from destructing and as most adult companies aren't shelling out the money that mainstream ones are to restore prints even the ones that do exist are probably in too rough of a shape to put on disc. That probably wouldn't stop VCX after seeing some of the prints they have used though.

Do you have a date for that? (Remember, I know nothing. <grin>)

I'm surprised that there haven't been any posts here from anybody in the business who might have more of an authoritative answer on the condition of original prints. (Although I suspect that your hypothesis of original film prints being lost is at least likely and it wouldn't surprise me, I find it hard to believe that this would be the case for *all* of them - especially with the classics where more care, thought, and money were laid out into making them from a filmic perspective.)

Time to add Bob Chinn's classic Candy Stripers to the list, although you might want to mark it as "quasi-edited!" Arrow recently released it on DVD and, not only does it look good, the DVD also contains the long-missing fisting scenes -- except that they're not in their original positions in the film itself. Instead, they can be found in an "easter egg" elsewhere on the disc. But, at least they're there!

Here's more info!

This thread is a gem. Perhaps we should have another forum to post talk about golden age classics (so this makes 3 forums, Porn Pool, Feature Side and Golden Age Classics.

Regarding the commentaries, I have the Easy DVD from NuTech but I don't seem to find any commentaries. How do you activate the commentaries? Normally, the commentaries gets activated from one of the menu options, in the case of Easy, I don't see any such menu.

It's always nice to have you around. Yes, you are right. There are 2 English Language tracks and the second track has the commentaries.

I got myself a bundle of classics including those you recommended. I'll post some mini-reviews later but I can tell you now that Easy, Vista Valley PTA, Tower of Power and Peeping Tom is good. Debbie Does Dallas (VCX) is good stuff too but the video quality and DVD sucks big time. Even the art work looks like the colors had faded.

If you haven't seen Easy, I would certainly recommended that you get Easy DVD. This is a very good golden age classic. One of the best in terms of contents and video/audio. It has a mainstream feel and situational sex. Jesie St. James is a fine actress, she puts up realistic acting.

For Vista Valley PTA and Easy, are they shot on film or shot on video?

How do you tell whether it's shot on film or shot on video?

I don't know which is which but the video for Vista Valley PTA and Easy looks good to me.

Both were shot on film, Mission. Anything made prior to 1984 is most likely to be shot on film. Anything since, it might be best to ask on this forum--someone will usually know. Glad you liked Peeping Tom , by the way.

Do excuse me for resurrecting this deep topic.
In a topic on a forum, which has members of the industry thereupon, which questions the temerity (and timidity) of merchants who possess some rights to original theatrical hardcore movies; I am unsure just how far I should go in mentioning the Berne Convention Purveyors who do offer unedited and uncensored Golden Age Movies on videocassette (and now, in many cases, DVD-R).
I have obtained many movies on VHS from these purveyors. This includes the full version of "Satisfiers Of Alpha Blue " (with both the fisting and the golden shower scenes - the voice-over to these scenes is in French - everything else is in English ).

Is it permitted to mention the specific purveyors, or to provide direct URLs, hotlinked or not?

Hey, PudgyM. I remember you from the RAME chat a few years back. I'm not sure what I was calling myself back then.

I don't think anyone here is going to mind you listing your sources for the uncensored movies. You might want to start a new thread for it in the "Shopping Info" forum, rather than put it here.

Oops! Been away for awhile, so I missed some stuff here. For those still with questions about cuts in Girls in Blue, Parts 1 & 2 (aka Little Girls Blue, Parts 1 & 2), here's a quote from Flash's excellent review of the DVD here at ADT:
The entire review is quite worthwhile! Since I long ago noted the vast differences in running times between the originals and the VHS "double-feature" reissue (from the master of which, it appears, the DVD was made), I never bothered to get hold of either the VHS or DVD versions of it. Looks like lots of stuff is missing!

Steph, this is the quandary.
I am of the belief that the videocassette version of "Satisfiers Of Alpha Blue " which was released in North America never had both the fisting and the golden shower scene.
But a videocassette with this imagery was released in Europe.
If you know where to look, and I can direct your attention toward where , you can find it in North America.
Does this constitute a bootleg ?

Based on this exerpt from the site you are referring to:
The titles they are selling appear to be bootlegs so the link should not be posted here. It appears that this site has purchased at some point a copy of the european version of the film and is copying that onto VHS tapes or DVD-R's. That is considered to be a bootleg copy. If they were selling original copies from a European distributor they would not be bootlegs.

It is the French edition released by Scherzo in the 80's. I lost mine and it's no longer available in France so keep your copy into a safe

Regarding "Satisfiers of Alpha Blue," I have an "early" copy of the US VHS release (it still has the full "silhouette screw" scene behind the main titles, instead of the freeze-frames on later editions). It does _not_ have either the pissing or fisting scenes from the original theatrical version.

Truly amazing to discover Peter van Aarle was a member here, founder of IAFD, the best adult database in the world, I remember when he passed (Sep -8-2005) it was incredibly shocking, but I forgot he was a mere 42 years old!
Does anyone know how he died? I'm still deeply saddened by his loss, really the greatest porn fan of all time, I use IAFD like nearly every day.

RIP Peter, you'll never be forgotten

Thanks for nercoing this thread as I never heard that Easy was edited or that the DVD had a commentary! I'll have to dig it out just for that commentary.

Easy is one of my favourite features, do we know for a fact the disc is edited as I recall a scene of rape early on that surprised and rather shocked me as it came out of nowhere in the film.

If they left that in what was cut, watersports or fisting?
