This time last year, Axel Braun had just signed to New Sensations (he's now with LFP/Hustler) and Kylie Ireland had just completed Kylie Doesn't Live Here Anymore for her new home, Platinum X Pictures (that title was later changed to The Whore Next Door and PXP now just goes by Platinum X). Zero Tolerance was celebrating its one year anniversary and the entire adult world was all buzzing about all the hot young new prospects. Last month's issue of AVN was their annual "Fresh" issue where in house writers, columnists, editors and reviewers put their journalistic integrity and credibility on the line by going out on a limb and boldly predicting who they themselves are going to heap even more praise (and likely awards) upon at the beginning of the new year. But just how accurate are they? Not at patting themselves on the back come January, but at gauging a star, director or company's prospective success and how fans will accept or reject them. Below I offer a few comments and a "Where Are They Now?" of sorts on some of AVN's "Fresh" picks for last year: Performers: Cytherea - AVN was "gushing" with praise for this Goddess in June and went so far as to award her Best New Starlet over the heavily-favored Teagan Presley. Today, Cytherea continues to win legions of new fans, curious and impressed by her earth-shattering and soaking wet full-body orgasms. It's safe to say that Cytherea, as long as she continues to perform at the level she exhibited in 3rd Degree's What Gets You Off, won't ever make a mockerly of AVN's decision to highlight her as an up-and-cummer to watch. Teagan - If Cytherea played Marcia Gay Harden to Teagan's Kate Hudson at the AVN Awards in terms of her Best New Starlet upset victory, Teagan got the first, as opposed to last laugh, by landing an exclusive performer contract with feature powerhouse and home to platinum pussycat performers Devon and Jesse Jane, Digital Playground, a few months prior. Teagan found vindication, however, by winning the equivalent of Best New Starlet from Adam Film World Guide, XRCO, F.O.X.E., CAVR and Rog Reviews. Today, Presley's work is released about as (in)frequently as any other contract star and reportedly is expecting a child. Ariana Jollee - An easy pick, I'd say but I don't think anyone could have predicted the roaring rampage of rectum ripping Ariana would go on in the twelve months following her spotlight in AVN's "Fresh" issue '04. Ariana just gets better and better with each outing and quite possibly leads the way for the class of stellar starlets that started around the same time as she (Lauren Phoenix, Katja Kassin, Katrina Kraven). Today, I'm seeing Ariana less and less due to certain business decisions she's made but she's no less incendiary than she was a year ago; she hasn't lost a step. Another great (yet safe and easy) pick. Mason Storm - Personally, I loved Mason from the moment I laid eyes on her in her first hardcore scene ever for MILFHunter.com. I had such high hopes but Mason, through her lackadaisical performances, always seemed to let me down. Despite all that, AVN saw fit to choose her as the Next Big Hispanic Thing. One, they were about a year too late in calling her "fresh" and to me it seemed Storm had one eye on the exit and a foot out of the door already. Today, she seems to be gone completely but not before finally giving me two performances I could legitmately rave about in Anabolic's Sweet Cheeks 5 and Evil Angel's Tales from the Crack. Directors: Van Styles - AVN called him the "Boy Wonder." I'd have to agree. My affection for the works of Van Styles is no secret to anyone who knows me or has read a review I've penned. Luckily for me, my thoughts have been echoed and agreed upon by almost everyone else who has had the distinct pleasure of watching one of his movies. In '04 Van was still at Video Team directing lines like Mamacitas, I Like It Black...and Deep in my Ass and the superb, Azz Fest. Garnering five AVN nominations but not a single award this past January didn't discourage Styles in the least. Today, Van continues to improve by leaps and bounds but for Larry Flynt and Hustler instead of Video Team. AVN was once again dead-on in predicting big things for this future player in the industry. Series: Angels of Debauchery - Honestly, I can see why AVN was excited. Having built a reputation as an outstanding, first-rate director of brilliantly classy smut over at New Sensations (Anal Trainer), Jonni Darkko was finally taking his show on the road over to Evil Angel, arguably the top gonzo house in the nation. The marriage was preordained and made in Heaven. It was a can't lose proposition. On paper, it sounded great. The Fresh Issue talked about his first series, the highly-anticipated Angels of Debauchery as if it were The Second Coming. The thing is, no one had seen a single frame. I'm not saying the series disappointed anyone, but it hardly set the world ablaze and still ranks just below Wal-Mart and sliced bread on my list of "must-have's." Big Wet Asses - A familiar fetish orchestrated by hot dog director Thomas Zupko only needed a little mustard (or in this case, lots of baby oil) to turn the ass-worshipping gonzo world on its collective ear. Big Wet Asses 1 & 2 had fans wide open and salivating for more. The third installment is legendary, deservedly winning the AVN Award for Best Anal Themed Feature at the 2005 AVN Awards, while #4 showcases The Master at the top of his game; relaxed, controlled and confident. Then something happened. Big Wet Asses 5, while no doubt pleasing some, featuring an all-Euro cast and shot entirely on location in the Czech Republic, alienated fans of the original quadrilogy. Zupko attempted to steer his runaway ass-train back onto the track with the sixth installment, giving us new Elegant Angel signee and Super Squirt, Tiana Lynn's first anal scene in over two years but the nigh-irreparable damage had already been done. With the madman now making his home at LFP/Hustler, who knows if BWA will ever right itself and return to its former glory. Companies: Lethal-Hardcore - I know they've gotten a bad rap around these parts for what they did to ADT darling Teagan but the fact of the matter is, that incident alone isn't enough to make me hate them. In fact, I like them. Alot. As a reviewer, I often find myself burned out on porn but when the urge to have some "me" time rises, I often turn to two companies: Acid Rain and Lethal-Hardcore. I would hope that most of you are "adult" enough to let bygones be bygones and check them out because you really are missing some high-powered, energetic, intense, no-holes-barred, down & dirty fucking. The same goes for JM Productions. Holding a grudge and not spreading the word about the fantastic titles that were coming out of Le'Wood because of their affiliation with JM is a crime. I hope they're happier at JUICY but it's a shame Francesca and Mark's work isn't talked about more here. There's a reason they won Best Oral-Themed Feature, Best Oral Sex Scene and Best Specialty Release - Big Bust, this past year. AVN also had high hopes for: Performers: Angel Cassidy, Janine, Katrina Kraven and Vicky Vette I'd be more than interested in hearing everyone else's take on some of the people, lines and companies I've discussed or the others I didn't. Ariana Jollee-- I don't hear from her much anymore but she's still my top gal in so many ways. Maybe one or two of the better known ones would've been okay but to totally take the series in a different direction was a bit of a unpleasant surprise. I imagine others felt the same way. There was always tons of feedback about the four previous installments here at ADT; everyone seemed non-plussed about the cast and location of number 5.
