as my old vcr ate a copy of afro erotica (vintage 1982) i was struck by the thought that lots of scenes are being lost to eternity - just look how may historical references are on excalibur and "no longer availble" are listed on jaded...
Are there legal issues invariably involved? I know with Excalibur many times I'd receive a film that had no packaging. It was likely just a duplicate from an original.
That was fine with me. Perhaps their other customers weren't so accommodating and once they started running out of original tapes, they didn't bother to replace them.
Or maybe no one wants to watch anything not on DVD these days.

Why doesn't somebody at Hustler, who owns VCA, dig into the Wet goldmine they've been sitting on for so long. They could release double issues of Afro Erotica at a fair price and make a killing.
Almost any tape that is "eaten" can be spliced and repaired. My suggestion, if you didn't throw it away, would be to splice it and transfer it to DVD.

Yeah, there's a lot of great stuff from some awesome performers/directors that will never see the light of day on disc- particularly (and obviously) from the Eighties and early Nineties. Some of that era's best work is lost because of reasonable concerns over the bottom line.
I know Elegant Angel has a shitload of titles that have never made the transfer, and I wish someone "worthwhile" would pick up Extreme Associates back catalog and bring it up to date.

Tell me about it! I find at Excalibur even vids from just a few years ago end up as "historical reference" w/no DVD available.
If you look in the "shopping" forum you'll see threads about how Excalibur has long been licensed to make its own dupes (anyone whose ordered from them will understand this). So, why should anything become "historical reference" if they had the ability to keep making copies? I don't understand...
Let Me Tell Ya Bout Black Chicks is a classic that will probably never be released on DVD. The scene where Sahara did two white guys in KKK hoods was shocking at the time.
I suspect that over time many of the films that people are looking for will show up. Companies like VCA are releasing their classic libraries, just slowly over time. I suspect so that each title can make money before they release the next one.
As for Excalibur, I expect that their license to dub is being redone by many companies as they release titles and plan to in the future release titles that Excalibur was licensed to dub. Many films that Excalibur used to dub on their own now have official releases. I expect that many that are historical reference one will see get a DVD release within the next three years.
When a title is out of stock it is not gone. It just means that copies aren't available for sale at the current time. If you view the Golden Age Classic list it shows films from 1972 through 1984 that are available on DVD. Adding in the early 70s and 85 through 89 several thousand films are currently available.
Flash you're right on target. The Let Me Tell you series and other classic VCA's are on DVD. Yesterday I ran across a copy of "Inside Marilyn Chambers" on VHS and I want to get it: for 15.00 dollar. I want to know if anybody has ever seen this probably dating from 1980 or 81. This was made before the concept of the "Inside" style of movies became popular. But is this movie a thorough run through of Chambers' career up to that time or is it just an early example of a clip show which the "Inside" movies have become?
**Also since we're on the subject of hard to find classic titles. Where would one find a copy of Marilyn Chambers's "Resurrection of Eve" vintage 1978? This is an almost impossible title to find VHS or DVD. A very beautifully photographed flick by porn standards
Copyrights (like Excalibur buys) are usually sold for a limited time (from 1 year to ??), so when that time is up you are not allowed to make your own copies anymore. In the old days we did the same, just buy copyrights and make our own tapes (also it was easier to smuggle mastertapes into the UK then containers full of regular tapes )
Also if you want to release your old stuff on DVD, sometimes (even if you have the original masters) the picture/sound quality is just crap. I know the collectors and serious fans will still buy a copy, but unless it was a bestseller on VHS, chances are a studio is not willing to spend the time and money on making a crappy DVD, that won't sell many units. (Yes, I know some classics look like they just copied an old rental tape, but luckily not all studio's are like that)
does anyone remember the studios "emerald" "sunshine" and "sensations"?! cuz i had some old porn movies from those companies, they were from the mid to late 90's. been wanting to know what happened to them.
I know that, I was talking about Let Me Tell Ya Bout BLACK Chicks (not white chicks). This movie has been out of circulation for more than 15 or 20 years. You can't buy the VHS anywhere, let alone the DVD.
I have a copy of "Let Me Tell Ya Bout Black Chicks" on VHS from like 1988 that I copied from someone else.....it's seen better days....I would LOVE to get another copy and then transfer it to DVD. I've actually found people on the internet that make copies of and sell movies from their own collection. I've actually gotten a few television series that have not actually been released this way. Check around....you may find someone that has a good copy and would be willing to make you one. Hell, I saw a guy online about 5 yrs ago that was making copies (for a fee) of his movies including "NEW WAVE HOOKERS" WITH the Tracy Lords scene still intact. Tempting because it was a classic....not tempting because it technically is child porn because of Tracy's age at the time (lol) I steered clear of that one....lol
