I have a bit of a rant ... I thought maybe it was limited to one director/line but now I see it is spreading.
I'm all for trying different stuff, esp in porn where it can be very cookie-cutter but this business of shooting porn scenes in complete darkness ... I don't get it.
I've tried to watch several scenes from Stagliano's Voracious, which I know a) is a vampire-themed and b) is supposed to be arty/narrative porn, a niche too often signified by terrible lighting pretending to be "moody, and c) Stagliano's shot tons of great gonzo and Fashionistas was a pinnacle and etc.
But here's the deal: If I can't see people fucking, how it even porn? And if it's not porn, what's the point? I can watch a hundred better vampire movies. I don't know if this is just willful "auteurism" gone unchecked or a poorly executed concept that no one's got the balls to say it doesn't work, but ... OK, there's a lot of other porn to watch, even just on the Evil site.
But now James Deen is doing the same fucking thing. Part 2 (Greed) of his 7 Deadly Sins series is almost all nocturnal so far. And damned if I can tell what's going where into whom ... I guess this is erotic for someone, maybe JD's vast female fanbase, but it is totally un-strokable.
That's it ... just a rant.

I haven't seen either of those, but I also have to wonder what the point is.

I totally agree with you. I'm sure it's appealing to a lot of people, but if the sex is obscured to the point that I can't tell what's going on, it's pointless to me. I found most of the Voracious scenes unwatchable for that reason, and I haven't seen the James Deen movie, but from the previews it looks like it suffers from the same problem.
As far as it being a trend at Evil Angel, so far Dana Vespoli's features haven't sacrificed well captured sex scenes for the sake of "auteurism".

Maybe the idea is to leave something to the viewer's imagination. I don't know.

I can't judge "Greed", because I have only seen the trailer/teasers.
But I have watched "Voracious", and I can only say that I could definitely see people fucking. In the majority of scenes.
The neon colors scene was "unwatchable" for me too, but that wasn't because it was too dark, it was because neon colors are ugly.

I like your thread title, though I guess you're talking about something different from scenes merely being underlit (a porn crime if ever there was one)?

Seems like Manuel Ferrara manages to shoot night scenes with no tradeoffs (the flashlight party gang bang with Aurora Snow and Sandra Romain is classic). And yes, I like Dana Vespoli's features. Very creative.

I don't like to watch scenes in darkly lit rooms, but thankfully there's about a millio other options of scenes to choose from lol. Not a big deal to me and I don't see it becoming a trend outside of the few scenes you mentioned.

Agree.
In general James's Evil stuff is top-shelf ... Good honest sex.
