Many, many others have also changed the spellings of their names. I have seen the model release forms in some cases and know this to be a fact. I do however agree that sometimes the names are simply misspeeled on the box cover.

The best solution is not to pick an "official" name and only stick with it but instead to maintain a list of AKAs. Such a system involves more work and more storage space but provides the best search capabilities for those folks that don't happen to know the official spelling. Unfortunately with the amount of product released each week it's unrealistic to think that such a system would be highly accurate.

See, some titles will not move if they're listed under an AKA or a misspelling. For example, take the following spellings of Leeanna's name & see which one you get more searches from & which searches result in more sales: Leeanna Heart, Leanna Heart, Loanna Heart, Leeann Hart. When I go to Jadedvideo.com, I have 14 variations to look for videos with. That's too many!! I ended up giving up after looking up 6 yesterday.

Even IAFD has listings (whether wrong or just mispellings) that are not linked up with the more common name. They have the same faults that everyone else does.

As Drew pointed out a good functional aka search engine will pop up names even if the aka is used, in fact IAFD does exactly that. There are several times that I have searched IAFD and a different name popped up, but when I look at the aka the name I searched for is there.

Then the other problem is when the performer uses two or more names. An example is Sharone (Evil Angel) and Szilvia Lauren (apparently her more common European performer name). Tricia Devereaux at Evil Angel once answered a question as to why different names are used by saying that they will generally go with what the performer puts on the data sheet at the time of the shoot. But she also went on to say that if they do know of some aka's they try to include them in the cast info.

I do agree that sometimes it is just a case of mispelling where someone is not proofing or being careful.

IMO, there is no 'ultimate source' that would or could be accurate. We just do the best we can.

With gay titles, you can locate any performer and all the titles in which he appears along with a listing of all aliases he has used and all the titles for each of those aliases - basically, it is the system Drew describes (above). It is a wonderful tool.

TLAV's listings for studios and directors are also far more complete (and correct) that anywhere else on the internet that I know of.

This is really a big task that i think will never be completed, i have spoken to many of the studio owners and alike and i asked them that question, the biggest reason was not misspelling of the star name, the problem was they are under contract for a certain name, so for them to leave and go make a movie they sometimes legally change the name, so they don't breech the contract, most studios when they sign these girls they are trying to brand their name for obvious reasons. Grant you some mistakes are made on the box art, but those are just mistakes the majority of the problem is them switching studios and signing stupid contracts.

Our DB has over 40,000 star names and your right most of them are doubles or mistakes, the problem is when a movie comes in and we have to input it into the system the person who is doing the data entry can only go by what's on the box, so even if you took it upon yourself to tackle this mess it will bet messed up again, its a vicious circle.

This is something we have always dealt with and will continue to do so.

I share your same sentiment.

I have personally gone through and changed hundreds of misspellings and A.K.A.s. It is a frustrating and daunting task.

The misspellings aren't that bad when they are a few letters off here and there.

Lacey Duvalle – aka – (Lacey Duval, Lacey Duvall)
Domonique Simone – aka – (Dominique Simone, Dominique Simon)

But, if you have someone doing data entry that has a box in their hand and the first name is spelled something like:
Hailey/Haley/Hayley/ Aston but her proper name is
Halli Aston chances are they are not going to look at all the other ways of spelling Halli before choosing a name.

Last but not least, the complete name change.
Analysa or Analysa Reese is Jessica Darlin
Beatrix is Kathy Heart
Jewel Valmont is Ava Vincent

AVN had an article in the magazine a few months back that made fun of all this silliness.

I think almost 2/3rds of our database has been corrected and I went back and forth between IAFD and Search Extreme
to make those corrections.

Certainly online vendors and data entry personnel cannot be taken to task for perpetuating errors or alterations propagated by the studios and/or stars themselves. Quit beating the dead horse with which we are all burdened.

The only realistic solution is to include them all. Just build a soundex algorithm into the search engines: that should take care of better than 99% of the misspellings and sound-alike aliases. Complete name changes will still have to be (and should be) tracked manually. Sadly, there is no way around that.

We've just started implementing something similar to this, tho we haven't really announced it.

Sample: Sex Boat at IAFD

We don't really have the resources to track up to three AKAs per movie per performer (familiar name, box aka, credits aka) we're mostly concerned with getting who is in the movie correct, boxcover be damned.

(i.e. Briana Banks aka Filthy Whore lists Evan Stone in the credits, Rog lists him as part of the cast in his review, but he's not in the movie. So he doesn't appear in our listing. However, if someone holds up the box and shouts "but he's listed here!" we can only counter with "he's not in the movie so he's not listed." I suppose a [MISCREDIT] or some such tag could be added to the database... but does any *really* care about that?)

Maybe when that magical day of "open source" user updates comes we could expand our tracking to include it, but it seems that there are more pressing things to focus on.

If I'm not mistaken, I saw boxes that had Tera Patrick listed as Tara Patrick as well.

My question is why you are so extremely rude in your presentation of the problem, Greenlantern1973? It doesn't help anyone to present a question like this and then play deaf to the VERY reasonable explanations as to why its not 100% feasible.

You might think you are an expert when it comes to names, performers, etc. But realize that there are tens of thousands of names, and titles. Can you tell me how to keep tabs on a name such as 'Tara?' Is it the blonde in 4fingerclub#8? Is it the person in metros' 'Ambition?' Or maybe its the 'Tara' in Peeing Party2 from Filmco... How would you differentiate between these performers? How would you even know who goes by what when the name is not listed under a pic? We are talking thousands of titles and names. Is it that you think only superstars such as Tera/Tara Patrick should be fixed? Is there a special list of talent that should be fixed according to your tastes?

Re-read your posts here. How much would you care if a name such as Jeff Stryker is noted as Jeff on some comps? Do you think people should face the guillotine if they don't distiguish such things when data-entering for each and every name? Or can you realize that its just not possible to completely fix the issue?

I think the main problem resides in the fact that a ton of product are not even labeled correctly on the product from the manufacturer. How this becomes a retailer or ADT's problem is beyond me. Completely. Now, if you want to call every porn company manufacturer and talk to them in the manner you have posted here, go for it. Or better yet, fly to Vegas and discuss this with each and every company at AVN. My problem is not the question, but the nature in which YOU think you have the solution and in your own words,

This comment doesn't deal with the huge amount of data that would have to be reviewed. Its akin to saying to a male porn star, 'I can do it better!' without ever being on a set in front of cameras, etc.

Your comments seem specific to certain performers (such as Tera Patrick) and not to dvds as a whole. Each and every title will have to be watched and verified to make sure certain performers are in it and that the boxes are correct. It is mathmatically a huge problem to fix; and while it can and should be addressed by the industry, lashing out at comments that aren't to your fancy takes away from the issues at hand. It creates the notion that you are just trying to be difficult rather than rational in your questioning.
