I put this post in Tech because that seemed like the right place to me. I am really curious about: Who uses Vista? For how long? What version? Do you use any other operating system? (partitioned hard drive, ability to boot in more then one OS) What do you use it for? (Gaming, editing home movies, creating music, whatever) How do you like it? (Tell me about any bad issues as well please) I have been considering buying a copy because I want to play Halo 2 on my PC. I can only assume that in the future there will be other Vista only games which I won't want to miss out on. [Link] |

It doesn't add anything that's useful to me at this point, and I don't much like the "Vista environment" -- I far prefer XP's low-key visual scheme. The thing that most annoys me about Vista is how long it takes to load and shut down. A reboot on my XP system takes about 1 minute; on my Vista system, maybe 5 minutes. The only thing I really like about Vista is the way the "sleep state" is built in. Given how long Vista takes to load, it's the only thing that makes day-to-day operation bearable. I also installed Office 2007 on my Vista system, but I prefer Office 2003 on my XP system. Perhaps the funniest thing is that "Vista" rates the quality my "Vista experience" as "high".  [Link] |

It's probably going to depend on what computer you get. There very well could be some incompatibilities that haven't been worked out yet. 2. I turned off Superfetch and indexing and was able to get my hard drive to stop churning constantly. The only reason why you'd need indexing would be if you didn't know where everything is. And even then, you have to know the name of the file you're looking for. Kind of useless if you just save as whatever it was named. Superfetch, as far as I can tell just caches your most frequently used programs in RAM so they open faster when you need them. Trouble is that it tends to keep caching until you have almost no RAM left. Before I turned if off, I was crashing once a day, at least. Now, I can run at least several days with no problems. Maybe more but I wouldn't count on Vista to be stable for more than that. 3. The look of the interface can be customized so it looks pretty much identical to XP. You can turn that flashy Vista shit off and save a bit on your resources. The Vista sidebar is annoying and I disabled it as well. 4. There is also a built in feature that's enabled by default that pops a screen up almost every time you decide to execute a file that asks you to confirm. This, I guess is supposed to prevent malicious executables from running without your knowledge but it's incredibly annoying. Fortunately, you can run msconfig and disable it as well. I forgot what you have to disable but it's something along the lines of "user protection". Google should be helpful there. 5. Basically, just about anything that could be potentially annoying about Vista can be bypassed or disabled. It just takes a bit of time to figure out how. 6. As far as I can tell, WMP cannot be uninstalled. It's part of the OS. If you don't like WMP, you'll just have to find a media player you do like, set it as the default media player and ignore the fact that WMP is still there and will find a way to rear it's ugly head now and then. And to beat it all, some of WMP's own functions don't seem to work properly. 7. When you first install the OS, it seems to take for fucking ever. I have no idea what it's doing but you'll probably be at least an hour installing the thing. You definitely won't look forward to doing the occasional reinstall if you're one of us who does so just to keep things relatively smooth and neat. 8. I don't like the defragger. As far as I can tell, there's no way that I can see to tell it which drive you want it to defrag and there doesn't seem to be any way to tell how far along it is in the process. It automatically defrags all active drives one after another. Only way to stop it is to either unplug or turn off the drives you don't want defragged. I think XP's defragger was better. At least the UI was. Maybe I just haven't figured it out yet. 9. There are still quite a few incompatible programs. Progress seems slow. Especially for freeware programs. I'm still having a problem with the delete function on Irfanview. Foobar is FUBAR. Half of the functions don't seem to work under Vista. Oh. And I have Vista Home Premium. I don't do any serious gaming. Just general computing. Web browsing, movies and photos. The disc that came with my system has everything all set up so you can partition and install other OSs but I haven't tried it. I don't know if it's an official MS disc or the Emachines way of doing things. I think, unless you already have at least 2 gigs of RAM, you might want to do a RAM upgrade before you even try it. I have all that stuff I told you about turned off and I'm still using around 500 megs just running Firefox. If you're going to try any serious gaming, you're goingto need more, probably. | Bill All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00 | Posted - Aug 28 2007 : 7:40PM I don't know if it was a matter of him not knowing what the hell he was doing or not, but it always seemed to me that, while it probably caused many of the problems with the Operating System, Microsoft seems to do a pretty good job of running previous versions of software when they put out a new version of Windows. Getting back on topic, I'm currently waiting for my new PC, which will have the 64-bit version of Vista installed. I've already checked to make sure that all of my peripheral hardware, which I'm not replacing has new drivers for Vista available for download. I'm a bit concerned about the box that I'm using to copy video tapes to my PC in order to create DVD's. The Vista driver available is identified as a beta version, which is not yet being supported. I'll post any trials & tribulations that I end up having in this thread. [Link] |

| kenny62 Member 21 Posts 11/02 | Posted - Sep 3 2007 : 9:43PM Vista has a slick GUI, is more malware-resistant than XP, multitasks smoothly (this version is built on Windows 2003 Server), and is rock-solid. Bad points are that not all software is Vista-compatible (I had to upgrade several packages) and not all hardware has drivers (especially older printers). In addition, some mainboard chipsets don't work properly under Vista (I've had excellent results with the nvidia nForce4 series). This machine is entry-level, consisting of an Athlon 3800+ X2 with 2gb of RAM, nVidia 6150 chipset, and a 500mb hard drive. It is rock-solid, and very snappy.
