Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious - Brendan Gill

For some months, now, I have been trying to send a simple letter of appreciation and good wishes to Velicity Von. The more difficult this became, the more determined I became to have some sort of proof that she actually received this letter. I have been assured by her booking agency and by a producer of many of her films that this letter had been forwarded to her, once as email and once as snail mail. I now believe that one or more of the following is probably the case:
1. Adult film stars do not read or respond directly to fan mail.
2. The industry as a whole has a policy of saying that they will forward fan mail to their actors, but does not do so. It is the policy, in other words, to lie.
3. Sites identified as belonging to adult actors in which they allegedly communicate directly to the public, including those on Adult DVD Talk, are bogus sites intended to provide only the fantasy that one is communicating with their favorite stars.
This is not a complaint. On the contrary, the impossibility of direct contact with adult actors was expected and is completely understandable. The tenor of the fan mail on this site verifies that most of it is suggestions about who to fuck in their next film, pleas for a favorite sex act and tongue in cheek or, worse, serious, sexual propositions. Who in their right mind would want to waste the time plowing through hundreds of letters and emails a week or month or every day filled with such pointless drivel? These people have lives to lead, and lots better things to do with their time.
Much more serious is the fact that the nature of what these actors do conveys to many, from the not very bright to the downright mentally diseased that these actors are all nymphomaniacs, satyrs and prostitutes who can be easily persuaded to have sex with anybody, any time, especially with fans. It’s indispensable to the industry to perpetuate this myth. Thus, on this very site, Ms. Von allegedly writes “DETROIT!!!!! Who’s gonna be there memorial weekend for DMF? I am. Come and see me!!! get a blow job.”
Can you imagine what would happen to these actors, their families, and their property if they did not do everything humanly possible to hide their real identities? For them, it must be like living under witness protection for life. They dare not even be recognized on the street! Entertainment personalities are regularly stalked and accosted by fans and pappparazi. How terrifyingly worse would it be to be hounded by armies of unpleasant people, from drooling customers too stupid to realize that these actors are only playing a role, to serial killers, rapists, and other criminals who would stop at nothing to get what they are after. Porn is a very dangerous game.
So I am disappointed, but hardly surprised. I only wish there were some way to get the messages of sincere praise for the genuine talent of the very few of adult actors like Ms. Von through to her. I believe these seriously talented people would be very pleased to know that their skill, not just at sex, is noticed and appreciated by many. I would hope that they would be encouraged that they could “cross over” if they wish to the so called mainstream dramatic media where they have shown, and would surely continue, to show themselves every bit as good actors as have ever performed anywhere. It is not one bit absurd or difficult, I believe, to envision Ms. Von and a select few others giving acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes or the Oscars.
I have been cheated of the great pleasure of knowing if Ms. Von would be pleased by my appreciation and gratitude for her wonderful acting skill (in addition to her other charms); of perhaps hearing from her and being challenged to give her the particulars of her prodigious talent. But I understand that that can’t happen an why it can’t, but what a shame!

Au contraire. Porn stars are easily the most accessible of celebrities. From casual to intimate contact, it's all their for the ardent admirer. Don't be discouraged. Velicity will one day be your pen pal for at least one exchange. Interest her with potential earnings or stimulate her with your ideas and you can look forward to more.

Porn fans are very normal and very safe people.
I'd write more on the topic, but I'm typing this reply from Dana DeArmond's computer, and I think she might be home soon, so I must be getting out of here.

Thanks for the encouragement, saratoga120. I hope you're right.
To creamfilled: I never said, and I am sorry if I implied that pornstars are not "normal people." FAR from it. The very point of my letter to Ms.Von was to thank and congratulate her and by implication the superior members of her profession for their unique and important service to their fans -- all of them "normal" people.

Unferth only proves facetitiously what I am saying, that in the porn business one needs to assume the worst.
By the way, I am not stalking anybody. I'm to old, 63, too crippled (sorry, "disabled") wirh CP, I hope too intelligent and well mannered, and my wife of 39 years would surely cut off my bourbon supply if I was.
We have something in common, Unferth. I, too, have read Beowulf.

Dana DeArmond disagrees.
Teagan too.
I don't know if Velicity Von reads or responds to her fan mail, but a lot of girls do.

Honestly, I have no idea why I'm posting here again. Possibly just a glutton for punishment. The first time was a joke, which the old guy totally didn't get, but what do those threads of Teagan, Taryn, and Dana really do to address old stalker guys desire to SEND fan mail?
Aren't those just public threads where you can "interact" with those 3? It's not like writing a letter to them personally.
Gosh, I'm really not mean, and certainly there have been a few times where I've wanted to say something privately to Dana, but I hope I'm not like that when I get old or, especially, if I get married again.
Dana is a fantasy. What does she REALLY want to do with being bothered with reading something I wrote her and what in the world could I possibly tell her that she could find sincere or meaningful, since my only REAL relation to her is from her thread, myspace, and porn?
I wish that I was her friend, but like porn is a fantasy...that wish will always just be a wish. Not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Some of my favorite girls have been very friendly and accessible through myspace or forums. This list includes:
Cassandra Calogera
Claire Dames
Holly West
Jordan Star
Sierra Skye
Taryn Thomas
Velicity Von
I feel they all have been very accessible and friendly for the most part. I do truly believe all of them are who they say they are and do enjoy the praise and compliments they receive because they have feelings and emotions just like everybody else. I'm sure it gets boring, repetitive and tiresome quite often (especially from me because I tend to ramble) but it generally is appreciated. Lots of girls escort so you can make direct contact that way with them if you can afford it but I don't think that's what you mean. I agree with saratoga that pornstars are very accessible and friendly to their fans depending on who they are and if they care to take the time to communicate with us. Cassandra Calogera has been great on here: asking for advice, updating us on her scenes, posting pictures and giving us all boners. I don't think any of the girls here at ADT are bogus because I've read they have to give ID (I don't remember where but I think Velicity said it because she thought there would be skeptics). Anyway, that's my three cents on this topic.

I disagree, I wrote Rebeca Linares a nice little love letter one morning a few months ago while she was visiting her parents in Spain. That same day she was so taken with my declarations of love that she hopped on a plane (which had mother fucking snakes on it), and rang my doorbell at around 7pm EST that evening. We fucked like bunnies all night long! And in the morning, I woke up, realized it was just a dream, cried while masturbated furiously to a creampie vid of hers, took a shower and went to work. True story.

I don't know if any of you ever worked in retail - i have, and there is a common situation when you have a little talk with a customer that's nice while it lasts, but that's it. Just a friendly exchange of words between two people, that does not lead up to anything. But there are always lonely people who don't get this, and think you have become their pal for life, just because you were the only person not treating them like shit this day. Then it can become stressful.
I see the presence of porn actresses in this forum in this light. I don't follow much of the star threads, but Dana and Sasha seem as genuine to me as any internet forum allows. They are people with lives, and one little part of their lives is this forum. The only thing that sets them apart from us (regarding this forum) is that their presence here also serves a PR purpose (for them personally and for the industry in general).

To creamfilled: The old guy knows it was supposed to be a joke. Bush was supposed to be a President, too; he just wasn’t much of one.
To Unferth: Out! Still your serve.
To whom it may concern: I may be old, but at least I read something before I judge it! Where, exactly, in my original message do you pick up that I am a stalker? The message is about realizing the importance to people in the adult film industry of maintaining privacy and distance from the public and to lament in my own case that this must be so, because I simply wished to express “my appreciation and gratitude for [Velicity Von’s] wonderful acting skill (in addition to her other charms).” Period.
This is not a serious matter, of course. It’s a silly note placed here, obviously, I would think, in the hope of someone suggesting a safe and effective way to communicate another one of my silly notes to Ms. Von. Apparently, there is something funny (both humorous and odd) in wanting someone to know that they do a splendid job; in wanting to thank them for the pleasure their work brings to others. It isn’t important. I just thought it would be kind of nice. It feels good to tell someone they are excellent, especially when it’s true. I think it would feel good to be told that too. That’s all. I don’t know what’s particularly funny or sinister about it.
Perhaps it’s just that everyone on this site is supposed to lie about everything or be funny or sleazy, or predatory. If so, I am in the wrong place. I didn’t think it was not permitted to simply compliment someone in the porn business beyond saying “Hey, Babe, love those tits!” or “Boy, could I go down on her, lol!” My apologies for annoying you studs who know the score. I’ll just be wheeling off back to the rest home now, where I can goose the nurses and stay out of the way. Look! Here comes another barrage of wit:
Boy, those stalkers get testy don’t they?
Hey Gramps, I can get Von to sign your wheelchair!
Sure gets his dander up. Too bad he can’t do the same with his dick.
Aw, you just need a good blowjob. Or a bad one!
Hey! Is that a colostomy bag in your pants or are you just glad to see me?
Well, the Old Guy still doesn’t get it.
No he doesn’t. And it’s really too bad that you don’t either.

With regards to your #3, I can assure you that some of the industry people on ADT are in fact the people they purport to be, and some are, as you probably already imagine, dudes pretending to be hot porn chicks.
But hey, at least you get the last laugh as a man who has been married for 39 years: you have probably gotten a whole lot more pussy without having to pay for it than they ever will.

Many of the responses in this thread really made me laugh, thanks.
Many of the posts in Star Crossed are vapid fan drool so I see why the performers would stop posting. It's okay to praise a particular performance or scene but maybe if the fans tried to post something slightly more intelligent and engaging beyond 'U r Sooo HoT!!' the performers would actually feel the need to respond.

I look at it this way. Those in the porn industry are in it for very different reasons. Just like anyone in the "Entertainment Industry" some are in it for the fame, some for the party, some have had something in there life they are running away from and need to re-invent themselves. Some are Type-A personalities that are just driven to be in the fore front.
What I am getting @ is - Not everyone is in there Industry to be adorned by "fans". They have there own reasons for doing what they do.
Also, I would feel that I am giving my all (flesh from head to toe) in porn. I might like to keep my soul for myself.
I just thank god everyday that I live in a time when young women are willing to show there bodies in the prime of there lives, and engage in visually stunning portrayals of my sexual fantasises. If I get some of my favorites to notice something I have written once in a while, I consider it a wonderful bonus.

Me too, friend! I remember, too, the Bad Old Days when there were stigma of disgust, perversion, and even danger attached to any kind of adult media, from stag films to the pin-ups of Vargas. Not entirely gone, but thankfully disappearing, is the old tendency to equate acting in adult film with prostitution and to denigrate their acting skills, which in the best of them are as good or even better than anything in the mainstream.
Let's hear it for the Good New Days, when sex is assuming its rightful place as one of the greatest human pleasures and accepted as an essential part of healthy, happy existence.

I was gonna let this one go, but what the hell.
Where did I say:
1. porn stars owe me anything?
2. that I have or should have a “relationship” with Ms. V?
And I say again that it is not a complaint. It is a lament, yes, that necessity and common sense mandates a justifiable distance between porn stars and their honest admirers.
Why post my essay (gee, thanks – I thought it was just a note)? Since you seemed to be too anxious to scold me and tell me what I really meant to bother reading what I really wrote, I repeat:
"This is not a serious matter, of course. It’s a silly note placed here, obviously, I would think, in the hope of someone suggesting a safe and effective way to communicate another one of my silly notes to Ms. Von."
Finally, in answer to any response that I imply that I am owed something, that I have a relationship with someone, that I am sick fuck who has cooked up a delusional obsessive and dangerous attachment to a porn star, I should say, by the evidence, those are your implications, not mine.
Finally, you are quite right to point out the error of my feeling cheated. But the error is a semantic one. I should have been more precise and said that I have been “deprived.” Cheated does indeed imply an element of fraud and denied entitlement that I regret and did not intend to convey. I made a mistake. Shoot me and get it over with.
Geez! Enough already!

your whole essay is full of entitlement.
last paragraph especially "i have been cheated of the great pleasure of knowing if Ms. Von would be pleased by my appreciation" etc. etc. why do you think you deserve to know how she feels about your appreciation?
you want to communicate with her. you want to send her messages and you want her to respond to you. you want a fan-to-star relationship with her
what's the difference? you are still whining for something you have no right to
and now you persist, saying you want suggestions on how you can send Velicity Von more notes
like a lot of porn fans, you don't recognize your own attitude about this. you keep telling yourself you are not that annoying guy, pining after a pornstar and giving her unwanted attention. well you are. it's obvious. if she has not responded, why persist?
you are the one continuing the thread. you want enough already, why you still posting on it?

I have stopped posting on the topic. What I have continued posting about, which hereafter stops because it clearly is a waste of effort, is the insistence of people that have to be right all the time by trying to make everybody else sound wrong all the time. They do this by assigning their own skewed definitions to words, reading implications that aren't there and when told something is not so simply insisting that it is.
When one's goal is simply eristics rather than to understanding, to win rather than to help or instruct, communication is pointless.
So, fine. Have it your way. You win. I lose. Y' got me. Yoy found me out. Congratulations!

Isnt the same in all forms of entertainment?? Some will have a "Holly West" attitude and they appreciate the "fanship", as to some other stars its just a job that pays the bills no more, no less. The other coincedence I have noticed is that for example Kelly Divine, Andi Heart, Holly West, Kristina Rose, Dana and Bobbi etc etc put out some of the best performances in porn currently, maybe the fact that they all contribute to these forums, they understand what the fans like and put it out there for us to enjoy

I have to assume that. I'd be delighted to do something nice for Ms. Von. It's a great feeling to do something nice for anybody, isn't it? But I have better things to do with money than mailing it to someone's trash can unopened.

I don't get the concept of fans buying gifts for their favourite stars (as in I do, but I think there's a lot wrong in it). I know that this actually happens.
What does the fan think he'll get out of it? Privileged affection...? Sex...? Love...?
To me it kind of hovers on the precipice of stalking behaviour, when a fan is thinking about a performer so much that he would part with cash to buy something for her in the hopes of getting something (any positive, unique reaction directed to him alone) in return. And if there was no reaction. how would the fan feel? Personally rejected, I'd imagine. It'd only escalate the level of how much this person has become a huge personal factor in your life, it'd probably get to a level near obsession.
It's okay being a fan. Buying the product which pays them, wanking over it. Talking to the performers who are cool with the fan interaction thing on here is cool as far as it goes. But as far as parting with money to buy gifts, just as a gesture of "good will", or because it's "nice to make someone happy" with nothing asked for in return, I'd suggest that there are a huge number of very worthwhile charities that could use extra monetary support.

I would not object to "showing my appreciation" to a porn actress with money or gifts. In any job, an employee might get a bonus for a job well done and accept it without the presumption that anything was expected for it besides keeping up the good work. I see no difference. Actresses accepting gifts in their situation is no more dishonorable for them than a waitress getting tips
I undertstand porn stars have relatively short careers as a rule, get no benefits, no 401k. Their work is hard (NPI), even dangerous. They deserve everything they can get for it and welcome.
As for expecting something in return for a gift, I wouldn't feel right expecting anything but the nice feeling of pleasing someone, of saying "thank you, good work" in a more meaningful way for them(and if an actress such as, well, you know, were to offer something, I'd be too nervous to accept). If someone else feels differently, I would disagree with them, but never suppose to condemn them for their expectation. The meaning of a gift is a personal matter between the people involved.

I got Jenteal a Beanie Baby once.
She'd posted on her site that her cat had hurt a paw or something so I got her a cat Beanie Baby when she was dancing at my local club. I got a real smile and a thank you from her (she seemed happy someone was reading her site) so that was totally worth it. She seemed to like it and it made her happy after she had ummmmm made me happy many times ;-). '
That was a good moment.
So I can completely understand why we would want to get our favorites a nice little memento to show they mean something to us. But you can also take it overboard pretty easily. But a nice little letter or something isn't too much. Of course demanding an answer and agonizing about why you never hear from them is not what you want to do either.
All about perspective I guess.
Anyways...done rambling now...carry on....

And if there was no reaction. how would the fan feel? Personally rejected, I'd imagine. It'd only escalate the level of how much this person has become a huge personal factor in your life, it'd probably get to a level near obsession.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What you say is certainly one possibility but I don't think it probable. I also think someone can be a fan, elect to show appeciation materially without any other motive, and simply be disappointed without triggering any obsessive behavior if he gets no response . Stalking is one outcome of a whole syndrome of emotional disturbance that is relatively rare

^You say that stalking is relatively rare, it's probably a more common behaviour than fans buying gifts for their favourite starlets.
If you think about it, the VAST majority of people who watch porn, do so casually. Wank and go. Out of my peer group, I'm probably the only one who could name more than about three porn stars (other than the obvious - Jenna Jameson, Tera Patrick etc). So porn is already a bigger factor in my life than it is for most people.
Add to that, the fact that I now regularly post on here, which means I'm already spending more time than average consuming myself with the porn world than most.
But this is where it ends for me, and I'm guessing - probably most others on here. To me, buying gifts for my favourite performer(s) is a whole greater level up. It means that the performers play such a role in your life, that you feel that you need to personally thank them for being.
In an earlier post, you likened it to a tip for a waitress - it's not the same. A waitress in a restaurant serves you personally. The human interaction is real, and the jobs are IN NO WAY alike; The hours, earning potentials, likestyles - nothing similar. The onus isn't on you to tip your favourite porn actress - they're on vastly differing pays, and if anything, the "tips" are payable by the director/production company. Your role as a fan watching, is one-way enjoyment.
Also realise, Velicity Von whom you wish to contact, has an account on here; she can directly control her level of fan interaction as she wishes. She doesn't post often, meaning that communicating with fans isn't her highest priority. That is her right.
Top pornstars are aware of how popular they are and how important they become to certain fans. They know that some of them will buy gifts for them (I've seen quite a few official pornstar Amazon.com wishlists to justify this). Velicity is popular. She knows it. She can leave for ages, the minute she returns, she's cast in the top Elegant Angel titles along with an Evil Angel title, and I'm sure other companies are clamouring to get her to shoot new material.
Therefore, this need you have to contact her, is your need, not hers. If she wanted to communicate with fans, receive praise, gifts etc, she would. But it appears, that aspect is not a big deal to her, and you should fully accept that.
Understand, when I used that term previously, I wasn't calling you a stalker, and judging by the way you write, your intentions toward Velicity seem innocent enough, but I do think that this has become a greater issue to you on a much more personal level, than it would be to most others, and even to her.
My advice: Leave it be, and just enjoy her scenes... She knows she's liked.

Velicity is a super sweet girl and probably just busy.
It happens. I have always tried to respond to anyone that messages me via myspace etc. Without the fans we are nothing. Fans are in a way kind of like my boss because if they don't buy, I don't get hired and thus I have to find a 9-5 and be a normal slut. Fans pay my bills.
It does get hard though. I don't even have a name as big as some girls like Jenna Haze, Dana DeArmond etc., and I get overwhelmed sometimes. It sucks but sometimes no matter how hard you try things fall through the cracks :(
What I find amazing is that, well I was on set one day getting my make-up done and Jenna Haze was there and she had her little MacBook and she was going through her emails and MySpace messages. She told me she reads them every morning and tries to respond to everyone. She even went as far as to research some of her earlier works to help a fan locate a scene she did a long time ago. That's amazing and if Jenna makes time to do it I think everyone should. There are some girls that are (although it sounds crazy) painfully shy, but I think most girls are just lazy or maybe can't find the time.
I'd rather be like Jenna.

I was just talking today to a Golden Age porn star and she noted how when she first started, it was quite uncomfortable to make herself publicly known by interacting with fans. Back then she said it was widely assumed that anyone who watched porn films didn't wear underwear . . . beneath their raincoats.
She is still on the scene and was more than delighted to contrast those early impressions with her realization that fans are as diverse as people in any other walk of life.
We both shared a knowing laugh when she raised the very real point that back in the day porn fans didn't even discuss their hobby with their closest friends.
I think it's great when the likes of Kristina and Tori and Jenna and Tanner come here to lend their personal touch. Is it a career-oriented move? Well, Kristina answered as much. But the attentiveness and frequency with which some of the girls post has me convinced that there is a pleasure to be derived from communicating with those who adore them as well.

You carry the waitress/tip analogy too far. I meant it to illustrate that material appreciation for a job well done, like job bonuses and tips are not unusual in other businesses, and I would not necessarily regard them any differently in this one.
Of course the jobs are different in other respects, but just because a pornstar's work involves sex does not mean that a gift carries with it the expectation of sexual favors any more than tipping a waitress carries the expectation that she will follow you home and serve you a snack that evening.
As to your advice, It is good and I have already taken it. As I said in my original and subsequent posts, I sent a single letter of appreciation and would have liked Ms. Von to have actually seen it. That's all. Perhaps she did. Perhaps not. If she never saw it or paid it no mind, I quite understood from the first that there were excellent reasons for her to choose not to respond to such letters. Her work does not oblige her to do otherwise, and her choice of privacy does not detract from the quality of her work or my appreciation of it.
BTW, though I will not inflict the whole letter that started all this upon you, I will say that it had two parts: one was praise for the natural acting talent that impressed me about Ms. V's performances. As a lifelong devotee of movies of all kinds, I think her acting abilities easily the equal of many fine actors of the past, and I tried to say why I thought so.
The second part was admittedly more personal to me, and I hesitate even to mention it, because it was personal and will of course invite the ridicule of some on this forum who seem unable or unwilling to believe that someone can mean what they say and nothing more.
I have CP (cerebral palsy) and have worked with disabled people, many who were unlike myself deplorably handicapped, and I wanted to make Ms. V aware of an aspect of what she does of which she may have been unaware. Here I will quote the letter:
"It isn’t something you’re likely to hear when they’re pitching for donations on TV, but many of the disabled, male and female, regardless of their disability or its severity, have a perfectly sound and well functioning sex drive. To put it bluntly, we get as horny as anybody else.
So, if you ever get to feeling that what you do doesn’t really matter, that it isn’t really ‘valuable’ like saving lives or building bridges, remember that there are people out here for whom you literally may be said to make life worth living, at least for a while.
No doctor can do that. He can keep your heart beating, but he’ll never make you glad that it beats. That may sound ridiculous to you, but to the broken people, whom the rest of the world finds repulsive or pities or dismisses, you and the few others that are good at what you do are their best chance to imagine for a while that they are whole and handsome and desirable. You are a bridge to normalcy, to desire and arousal and contentment that no engineer could ever build.
Whether or not this ever matters to you, thank you for it, most especially you for being so remarkably good at it. Thank you, Ms. Von, and if anybody should ever look down at you or scold you for what you do, spit in their eye for me and the rest of us for whom you are as precious as food and dreams and real sleep.
And that is why you are getting my one and only ever in a lifetime fan letter. Because a person needs to know it when they do good, and when they are good. So please be happy and healthy; laugh all the way to the bank, and do everything that is wonderful to do. You’ve earned it. Thanks for reading this."
Well that's it. I will indeed leave it be and enjoy Ms. Von's performances. Never wanted to do anything else. But I do wish she'd take a whack at 'crossing over.' I still believe that girl has talent she hasn't even opened yet.
Thanks for your kind understanding and advice.

Besides participating here, I contact porn stars through Myspace. 95% of the time, I ask for recommendations, and fewer than half the girls respond.
Most fans aren't reviewers, but I have reviewed DVD's specifically because girls recommended them to me.
I write many more positive reviews than negative reviews. This is mainly that I rarely finish DVD's that I don't like, but it is also because, if a girl has been nice nice enough to respond to an email, I won't go out into the big internet and say, "This girl is NOT sexy, my dick shriveled up so much that I needed tweezers to grab hold of it."
Jessica Drake, for example, has been a real sweetie. (By which I mean she responded to 4 or 5 emails, not just one or two.) I have written a number of positive reviews about her work, because I think she's very sexy, and she's one of the best actresses in the business. One DVD with her on the cover literally gave me a headache. But I'm not going to tell you which one; I threw my notes away and didn't write a review.
Obviously, one review won't make or break a girl's career, but 1000 will, and if you are like Jenna, and make a habit out of checking your fan mail every day, drop by drop, you will fill the ocean.

@ duefuss:
Thank you for sharing that... In this particular instance, I fully understand where you are coming from, and why this was of importance to you personally.
It's good that you came to terms with the response thing... The points that you raised in the second part of your letter extract, are important in a wider context, and I think posting that publicly on here could serve as a thank-you not just to Velicity, but to every other performer on here as well. So I think that's the upside.
Cheers.
