I agree with Clam. I think it is much easier to see both real pleasure and real emotions in porn today than ever before. I think that a lot of the romanticizing of old porn has to do with remembering ourselves, and our less jaded reactions when we watched it, rather than accurately remembering what that old porn was really like.I had a few old scenes that I remembered fondly and when I tracked them down I found that they were not nearly up to today's standard.
I also agree that the men in porn have a lot to do with the current quality. Watch a film with Eric Everhard and see the BTS footage of him. He is always eating pussy because he really wants to. If anything is going to turn a girl on, that is it. A good example is in the original "Semen Sippers." You can see how turned on the Brunette in the first scene is in the BTS footage. She even swoons into him a little at one point.
One reason I like BTS scenes is that when the official cameras are one you expect the girls to at least act turned on. When they are turned on for BTS footage it is easier believe it is not just an act.
When I saw Missy Monroe getting a DP in BTS of "Semen Sippers 3" just because she really likes DPs, she made a fan.
I also think the men have an impact in that the girls in the industry learn the unspoken rules from them. If they never go for a kiss, the girls will learn that it is both not expected of them, and somehow "wrong." When EE and that French Dude that Mike John uses a lot kiss the girls it is both hot and teaches the girls that it is something that happens in porn. When a guy dutifully treats the girls like a john would treat a whore and politely stays away from her face, she will pick up that whore ethos and avoid kissing with other men as well.
I would expand the credit for the passion in front of the camera beyond just to the men in front of the camera but to those in back as well. I think directors today bring out a lot more from the talent. When I started my true porn hound days in the late 80's I would get a stack of four tapes and hope to get more than one sizzling scene. If I got four good scenes out of four tapes it was like hitting the jackpot. These days, as long as I am careful about the directors, I expect to get three or four good scenes per disc.
In other words, I am getting at least five times as many good scenes per movie as I used to expect.
The odd thing about this from my perspective is that where I used to follow a girl from movie to movie, I now follow directors from girl to girl. In the past, when the directors were not nearly as important, all the heat came from the girl. If you wanted a good scene and you found a girl who would give it you sought out all of her scenes. You might only be guaranteed that one good scene from the movie, but one good scene per movie was above the average in any case.
I now find myself in the odd position of liking certain girls but still only seeing them a few times because I only want to see them with a director I trust. Following the girl from disc to disc now often means that even though I am seeing a girl I really liked before I am getting as much out of the scene as I would have seeing a different girl with the original director.
An example of this is "Pride Open" by Smash pictures. Melissa Lauren was smoking in "Semen Sippers 3," but here she is fine but nothing all that special. Missy Monroe manages to bring the heat, but still not as much as she did in SS 3. I think a lot the difference is attributable to the difference between Mike John as director and whoever directed "Pride Open."
There is a reason that directors are so important in Hollywood. It turns out that they are just as important down in the valley.
