We have more and more of 5s and 4.5s. What puzzles me is sometimes some reviewers rating a movie as 3.5 have a better opinion of it than someone rating it 5. Also many times the shortest and less elaborate reviews get the highest ratings. There used to be a time when doing a search by rating you did get in a few pages a relatively short listing of the best available, not anymore... Of course we all have some favorite reviewers that we trust more than others, but this abuse of the rating system makes it almost worthless in the end (except for 1s and 2s which are good at pointing terrible movies). Maybe ADTshould change the rating scale for a new one going 1 to 10, while insisting on the fact that 9, 9.5, 10 are only for outstanding DVDs not the latest run of the mill compilation by Private. At the very end I list FINAL THOUGHTS (this is my opinion of the DVD.) I have only given out 12 ratings of 5, out of 60 reviews, so far, if you have a question, comment, or complaint about my reviews visit this forum: -I'd love to hear what you all think of my reviews!

Generally, all the movies I review I buy myself. I only buy stuff that years of experience suggest I will like. This year has seen some excellent movies from Christoph Clark and Rocco Siffredi that I have really enjoyed (in the case of Rocco, perhaps more like movies with some REALLY excellent scenes) so there is no way I would give them a low score. I think it has been a pretty good year for porn, as far as I am concerned! I could post some reviews slating Zane movies, for example, but what would the point be? They're like Steps (UK pop pap reference here) - no one with any idea thinks they are good! [Link] |

Personally, I think part of the purpose to writing a review is to save the rest of us from throwing away our hard earned money but perhaps companies treat "positive" reviewers better. I couldn't say, not being one. In any case, learn to read between the lines when reading a review and you'll eventually figure out what each reviewers grading curve, as well as any quirks they have, are and act accordingly. | yungturk Member 44 Posts 9/01 | Posted - Dec 23 2001 : 4:02PM Besides everyone's obvious differences in taste, we all have different familiarity with porn movies in general as well. Some people have seen so many movies, they're walking porn encyclopedias. Others haven't seen quite so much, and for that reason I'd guess they unknowingly "inflate" their ratings simply because they enjoyed the movie. Afterwards, when these same people see a few more movies and realize what better quality productions are out there, they continue to award high scores, never going back to change their initial review ratings to reflect their broader experience (is it even possible to do so?) If somebody's songs of high praise led you to buy a really sucky movie, well I'm sorry for that. The best thing I can recommend is that you try reading multiple reviews, if they're available. Or look at screencaps from the movie in question. Generally I can get a good idea about a movie after reading a couple reviews. Not sure who to trust? Search for a movie you HAVE seen, then read the reviews on it. Maybe one of these guys has seen another one you're interested in. HoustonDon and Astroknight seem to have seen every porn movie ever made. After a while, you'll get an idea of what HoustonDon thinks "warm" is, and what makes Astroknight fall out of his chair laughing, and you can go from there. I'd hate to think that a prerequisite for writing what some would think is a "fair" review is a strong familiarity with no less than hundreds of different titles, of every genre. To ADT: Perhaps this could be an idea for a new forum/page? That is, reviewers could post an explanation of their reviewing style, what they like/dislike, how much they've seen, and we could find all of this in one convenient location...I think it might help some. My porno knowledge is increasing, I only have only seen 100 or so porn DVDs, and I have reviewed 62. I intend to write reviews for every DVD I own, in time. I love how this website has evolved!

It has occurred to me that since I already have space, I could always do something on my own. It may help however to include a signature on the reviews. We could fill it with a 'get to know your reviewer' section or a link. Drew, on my home page I wanted to create a link that would go to search results for Endorphin, but it did not work. Screenshots are always great but from the actual text of reviews you just have to take what you get. People have wildly different standards. Anyone here could name their favourite movie ever and within an hour we could have a dozen people who hated it. Some people obviously let their overall opinion affect all the other scores too. As someone considering doing the odd review I can understand that there’s a fair degree of time involved in trying to do them well. You can understand that people in the early stage of reviewing might want to start off with something they either like or hate a lot (reviewing completely average product isn’t as easy as it might sound) so there could be more frequent incidence of high scores early on. The scoring system will vary from reviewer to reviewer too so I guess people just have to take from them what they want to. [Link] |
