Adult movies with a thicker plot

I read erotica and in some of them the characters are well established. Lot of porn movies I see have a razor thin plot and there is almost always a direct attraction the first time people see each other. This some how brings down the overall enjoyment to me. john lyons Senior Member Co-founder of Vinegar Syndrome 1188 Posts 1/08	Posted - Jun 3 2018 : 9:20AM For more contemporary stuff (i.e. post 2000), there are a decent number of Paul Thomas movies that have very well developed narratives, particularly: CRY WOLF SEX & VIOLINS HEART OF DARKNESS 8th SIN EMEPROR His re-imaginings of the below (obviously referenced) films are also all excellent and fairly densely plotted, sometimes more subtextually than literally. I'd say that I like them all more than their inspiration films, except for DEVIL. THE NEW BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR DEVIL IN MISS JONES THROAT: A CAUTIONARY TALE Nic Andrews is another contemporary director whose movies are well worth watching. His work mostly feels like mid to late 90s direct to video thrillers and skinemax movies than early 2000s porn. Though he made some all sex ventures, these are well scripted movies: DEVON STRIPPED RUSH NO LIMITS LOADED DARK ANGELS DARK ANGELS 2 A not very technically polished but otherwise solid 2006 hardcore horror movie called SUCCUBUS, directed by Jack Hammingway, was very impressive in terms of the quality of the scripting. It basically plays like a hardcore take on a late 80s regional SOV horror. Two from Graham Travis that I like more than a lot of people, but both of which do a nice job integrating character development and strong plotting into gonzo porn/indie movie trappings are WASTELAND (which is slightly bogged down due to the presence of industry hemorrhoid Xander Corvus) and PORTRAIT OF A CALLGIRL. For 70s/80s stuff, the selections are truly endless. My personal choice for best hardcore feature film is Jonas Middleton's truly mesmerizing THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. Anyone will be hard pressed to find a 'sex film' with a more profoundly complex screenplay than that. To that extent, basically anything with Ron Wertheim's name attached as writer is great. His subtle study of a woman coming to terms with her bisexuality in WET RAINBOW is excellent, and even more so, his Bergmanesque portrait of loneliness, played out as an almost-horror film in Damiano's MEMORIES WITHIN MISS AGGIE ranks as another critical piece of 70s hardcore. Shaun Costello's DRACULA EXOTICA is an imaginative and distinctly original take on Love At First Bite (surpassing that screwball snoozer). Chuck Vincent was a master of well defined character dramas, but his 1981 film ROOMMATES and 1983's IN LOVE rank as dramatic high points in his nearly uniformly excellent filmography. His 1976 detective comedy/giallo hybrid, FAREWELL SCARLET, is also among the better hardcore comedies. Armand Weston was also a master of subtext laden character studies, often filled with more than meets the eye. Helming probably the finest hardcore noir, EXPOSE ME LOVELY, and the bleak kidnapping drama, THE TAKING OF CHRISTINA, before the incredibly broad parody of American pop culture, TAKE OFF. On the West Coast, Sam Weston (Anthony Spinelli) was kind of dense storytelling in sex films. His 1977 masterpiece SEX WORLD is a labyrinthian and avant garde influenced examination of insecurities, with vaguely sci-fi window dressing, his ensemble character study. Even when dealing with more melodramatic subject matter, such as his prostitution saga, CRY FOR CINDY, or male stripper drama, THE DANCERS, Weston always payed keen focus on his characters and storytelling, resulting in memorable filmmaking enhanced by excellent acting. Gary Graver, who mostly opted to make lighter fare, began his hardcore career with a stunning portrait of a family coping with the death in 1975's 3 AM. His 1981 crime thriller, AMANDA BY NIGHT, is no less complex, feeling much like the low-budget exploitation films Graver was shooting for his day job. Some other great films: A CLIMAX OF BLUE POWER - A well made, mean spirited thriller. A TOUCH OF GENIE - If you ever imagined what a hardcore Woody Allen comedy would look like, dream no more. (only our Blu/DVD is uncut) BLONDE AMBITION - Aptly given the tagline "If you enjoyed Deep Throat and Singing in the Rain, you'll love Blonde ambition" BOTH WAYS - Marvelously written character drama about a married man's secret affair with a male lover. NOTE: this is not a 'gay' film. (only our DVD is uncut) CAFE FLESH - Arguably the best hardcore science fiction film. NOTE: all current DVD releases are cut. HARD SOAP! HARD SOAP! - Genuinely hilarious take on soap operas. LITTLE GIRLS LOST - Densely scripted and well acted character drama about seeking fame in Hollywood. LOVE, LUST, AND VIOLENCE - Hard to find but very well scripted mafia thriller. NAKED CAME THE STRANGER - The best written of Radley Metzger's 'henry paris' films. RAW TALENT - An excellent, vaguely biographical, film starring Jerry Butler. NOTE: avoid all current versions; 10+ min have been cut. RESURRECTION OF EVE - The best film produced by The Mitchell Bros. Much more experimental, but a complex story of relationship abuse and racism. SADIE - Bob Chinn's hardcore take on Somerset Maugham's Rain. SWEET SAVAGE - Well written and big budget hardcore western. NOT: All current DVDs are heavily cut. 20+ min are missing; mostly plot. WANDA WHIPS WALL ST - A broad and clever wall street comedy. WILD DALLAS HONEY - A through character drama that plays like an early 80s hollywood drama that happens to be hardcore. [Link]

There is such an abundance of wall-to-wall, all-sex gonzo videos on the market, that the basic, rudimentary elements of filmmaking (characters, plot, dialogue and action) seem to have been forgotten. Sometimes it does, but often the magic of porn is the stuff you get when there is no plot (or very little). That's what makes it so special and different from mainstream stuff and more like cinema verite or art cinema. [Link]

Just like an action film or a horror film, the sex scenes can advance the plot in a porn when well written. A recent movie that comes to mind is Snapshot from Pink and White. Shine Louise Houston really does a lot with that movie. [Link]

(snip) Click to expand This might not be what Ms. GGG means, but an example that I recently watched is Chuck Vincent's 1981 movie Roommates. Definitely a thick plot and fine character portrayals from the principals (Veronica Hart, Samantha Fox, Kelly Nichols). But as porn ... well, little sex and most of it is very non-erotic, deliberately so as part of the plot, and at times minimally explicit. A noteworthy movie, but if you are looking for rousing sexual thrills, you'll come away very disappointed. [Link]

I know women who find some of the complicated (non)consent uncomfortably relatable. I suppose this gets down to what one desires from an adult film. I want different things from porn in different contexts. Roommates has its place, but it's not for a romantic evening in. [Link]

Click to expand Out of curiousity what was it about JOANNA you didn't like? I was intriged by the dreamy and morbid atmosphere and ending but did find the performers oddly disengaged (stoned?). Even with a flimsy plot, I like a lot of chit chat between characters/performers both in the narrative and the sex portions. My memory of JOANNA is a lot of fancy cinematography, graceful people, and a musical score. That's nice but it's also a bit boring. [Link]

Snuck it from my father's stash on VHS. Circa early '80s. Have we forgotten about Raw Talent? My all-time favorite erotic film. Plays like a well-made B-movie. Original storyline, natural acting, rockin' soundtrack, shot on location in NYC, and the hilarious karate scenes which were edited from the re-release. Jerry Butler was the James Dean of his genre. I don't want to be specific but that story line is very good I think. Look for the title of the film on any adult streaming or dvd internet site. I recommend a purchase of course. It is not the best in film or sound quality but I think it makes up for it in the plot and what you will be viewing. Let me know what you think, in a reply if you want. There are a number of adult stars and stories in this particular dvd set and she is in one of the stories. The bottom two is how she looked in her later years. The top two is before her enhancements. There is not a lot known about her however she looks comfortable on camera for the most part. She performed in a fair amount of adult films but then stopped. Anyway, you can look up all this stuff. Click to expand My take on this is what I have been discussing recently. In the case of Barbara Broadcast (I have not seen Joanna), the sex IS the plot. There is so much from every moment, that it isn't merely people just sawing dicks in and out, but also just as much with the expressions, the look of the film, the dressing up, the lighting, the sweat etc... To people that don't appreciate good sex on film (or often are commenting and have never watched beyond some adult clips they found on the internet) this is lost and that makes the "thick plot" lost on me too. It is like coming away from a movie like Maniac and criticizing the lack of plot, when the kills themselves are just as much a part of the story as the in-between. This was a movie that for its time, tried to show a brutal reality on a limited budget of the death itself. To add to this (if it wasn't already mentioned) is Dixie Ray Hollywood Star. Though Scoundrels and The Image are so surreal they have more re-watch value, while also serving up some titillation. While not Hardcore, Tinto Brass movies have a similar impact on me. [Link]
