For an article I’m writing, I’m looking for statistics on number of rentals and purchases of adult videos, both tapes and DVDs for as recently as possible. I would like to see numbers that include both brick and mortar stores and on-line rentals/purchases. The numbers could be just US or worldwide, whatever might be available, but I’m primarily interested in US statistics. I would also be interested in estimates on number of adult sites in existence on the Internet and amount of Internet traffic to adult sites, although I know from my research so far that these numbers can be very fuzzy. Can anyone suggest sites where I might look? The most recent stuff I have is from a 1996 survey of Video stores that says there were 609 million adult tape rentals that year in the US. This apparently doesn’t include on-line rentals and of course it is somewhat before the mushrooming of the DVD market. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Billy

Alexa.com is probably the best tool for gauging traffic to adult sites. Plug in a mainstream site that provides accurate traffic data (a public company or one with stats publicly available) and then compare it to an adult site.  [Link] |

I have also been trying to ascertain what percentage of women actually buy porn, without success. The occasional articles in various publications seem to be little more than unresearched, canned PR bullshit which just muddy the waters, so the most accurate method would be to ask retailers what percentage of their sales are to females. That's all they needed to know. When a store generates income figures for specific films there are a lot of factors that end up not being taken into consideration and it can get quite complicated. The bottom line is money, if a rental film doesn't generate any money sometimes it can be attributed to somebody renting it and never bringing it back. Sometimes a rental film generates a lot of money because of late fees collected off of it. When it comes to the sales of films it is rare a company will restock that particular title because there is already something newer out there that needs to be bought, especially in porn. [Link] |
