Any Advice for those just starting out? It's a big decision, I'm in need of some extra money and I'm not afraid to dedicate myself to this business. I'm trying to get out of debt and hopefully provide an OK living for myself. There isn't much I won't do because there's a lot I've already done. I'm not really pressed about that type of concern. I'm just nervous, shy and about half way there into signing an agreement. Maybe I just need that extra push or maybe I need to hear some advice from those of you who have been in my position. You might get things like chlaymidia... which usually can be cured. As for the big one, HIV...... well, a significant portion of the performers in gay porn have HIV. They don't hide this, so you certainly can chose to work with negative guys only. And you should. Negative performers will often still bareback guys off camera even if they are condom only for film. If you are doing a scene with another man ,wear a condom or don't do the job. Period. And don't have sex with any of them bareback off camera; even if they have tests saying negative. HIV medications are such now that people can test "negative" for years and years; so you really can't trust the tests with the gay performers. I know it isn't too PC to say that, but it is the truth. In gay porn, they allow HIV performers to work so it just makes the risk factors a lot higher. Wear condoms, accept that you may get herpes, and hopefully you can have a good career. If you stick to condom only you can probably get through a career without contracting HIV. Unless they implement the same policies as straight porn (as in, HIV means you are never working again), there will always be a high risk there. You can navigate it , just be aware. These are potential killers in my opinion... with a full conscious. HIV nowadays is not 100% deadly but is still a life-taking threat. Nobody wants to take part in the next "Dallas Buyers Club" movie. About straight porn, things are not that tragic because there are very frequent and wide credible tests for STDs. Of course the risk is there, but it is a lot smaller than when having one night stand unprotected sex with a stranger in a real life situation. My advice to you would be the obvious. If things are like Cindy described I would stay away from gay porn and focus on the straight area. After all it is a fact that lots of straight male performers are bisexuals. Find a good model agency, go for an audition and they will tell you all the things you need to know about performing. DO NOT hesitate to express your worry about STDs though. Mike, frankly, there is HUGE need of fresh male talent in the biz. Trust me, I know it very well. If you manage to get adjusted with the stage conditions which might vary according to the studio and you prove yourself a skillful performer you would earn a very good day's salary! Honestly, I think herpes is over rated a bit as it relates the the porn lifestyle. I mean, yeah it has side effects and potential long term consequences; but A LOT of people in porn smoke cigarettes which is incredibly more dangerous. And a huge portion of the general population has some form of herpes and many don't even know it. It is unlikely anything but abstinence can make it 100% certain you won't get it at some point in your life. Even the most monagamous of people may get it from someone who doesn't even know they have it. People who yell from the mountain tops they are "100% clean" may have a form of herpes and have no clue. Guys who go in, should go in with their eyes open, and as long as they are at peace with it they can have a great career. Many of their stars who are HIV positive, take quality medications, lead a decent life and make a great living at it, and work with other HIV positive males only. That is fine as long as everyone knows what they are getting into. I don't know if they will ever clean up their act with HIV. It would require shutting down, testing everyone, putting all the HIV performers out of work, and then starting back up again. A very messy situation so they will just go with the status quo I am sure. If you only work with guys who test negative, and you always wear condoms no matter what his test says, you have a high chance of having a career without any serious incidents. I think the man asking these questions should be aware of all of that. And really, if he is concerned about even getting herpes, then I think porn is not the right choice. It isn't for everyone.
