I am interested in getting into the adult video industry. I don't know a lot about how adult films are made, what goes on behind the scenes or what tricks are used, but I'm interested in learning more. I know this is something I want to pursue and that this is something I'd be good at.

Would anyone here who's ever taken part in the making of an adult film care to share some suggestions, tips, tricks, or advice for future adult video directors/producers that read this message board?

Things I'm interested in learning more about are common pitfalls in prepping pornstars for a scene, pitfalls in camerawork, pitfalls in location setting and just general info on what it takes to make a scene. Who has to be called, what has to be arranged, what has to be setup, what avenues are taken to make it all happen. And what some of the most difficult parts are about the whole process. What are your pet peeves besides pornstars showing up late? What are some common obstacles faced by pornstars and directors and how do you deal with these problems?

I know when you watch the finished product it looks quite simple, as if the two pornstars just showed up naked to have sex on film and that's it, but I'd like to know more about what the viewer doesn't see going on.

What do you wish you had known before you got started in the adult video industry or what did you learn the hard way?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Maybe something you've seen recently or years ago that stands out in your mind.

And for all those not working in the industry who watch a lot of adult videos, what are some characteristics of a great director? What are they doing differently that makes them stand out? What would you suggest to an aspiring adult video director.

Here are some things I would do If I was directing a film.

Before Coming In:
I'd have both shave 2-3 days prior to avoid razor bumps.

Have both do enemas before coming in that day.

Have both take showers before coming in.

Encourage them both to take naps before coming in.

Then drink some coffee before coming in.

On the way in, tell them to sing to warm up their voices.

While on set/before the scene starts:
Have both pornstars eat something before starting. Have food ordered in. Pamper them a little on set prior.

Have both pornstars take a shower again, to know each other is clean/smells good/fresh.

Have both brush their teeth/mouth wash and take mints before the scene for fresh breath and to encourage more kissing during the scene.

Have both watch/listen to some porn while putting on makeup, clothes and stretching. Gets them in the right mindset plus loosens them up.

Have them both read over their lines again and phrases to randomly insert during the sex.

Right before the scene, have each rub edible flavored lube lightly on.

Have both drink some water prior so they feel hydrated and their throats are clear for any dialogue.

Rehearse the scene, go over camera location and what your expecations are, and start shooting.

During the scene:
Guide the transition and pace of the film like a music conductor.

After the scene:
Pay the pornstars, clean up the set or get ready for the next one.

Mr. Future Director, it seems you want to make your thread save you from the school of hard knocks. I'm not sure who of those really in this business will want to take the time to offer you much in the way of advice, since they all had to learn the hard way.

My best advice, and it's the same advice I recieved when I graduated from actual film school and started to eagerly work on sets (at that time it was mainstream), is FIND ANOTHER PROFESSION. Porn Valley's similarities with big budget movies are - assembling talent and toys and try to make magic on an average 16 hour day. The differences are that you will never be properly compensated for all your pain and suffering, unless you start your own successful distribution company. Hopefully there are many other things that you feel you can do well since I can promise you, show business is not what you imagine it to be, and the sex business is even WAY LESS GLAMOROUS. This is the best advice you will ever get.

Can't you just use DVDemon or shop it around to the different studios to distribute? There are so many studios out there, you're probably better off just finding one that's interested in the finished product and have them distribute it for a cut.

Worst case scenario, you buy some DVD burners and burn copies yourself. Buy all the cases in bulk and get the sleeves laser printed. Then contact some online dealer, send them a shipment, whatever they don't sell, they send back.

Isn't it that easy?

I wish it was that easy. Of course, thinking it's that easy might get you a lot further than feeling too insignificant to try.

But if it was that easy, why isn't everybody doing it? Why do company's spend thousands of dollars on ads in AVN and other marketing avenues every month? Why is the convention circuit so important to upstart companies trying to get more widely networked? Why do even those smallish upstart company's have a rinky-dink warehouse in the Valley someplace to distribute van-loads of filth to the masses?

I used the word "successful" and to make our FutureDirector's dream work, huge numbers must be sold, otherwise the substantial cost of producing will never be recouped or profitted from. BIG SECRET: the key to any endeavor is distribution and marketing...and is even more important than the dream and burning desire to create great product. Otherwise, NO ONE WILL SEE IT.

BTW, DancesWithPorn, I've got some pretty decent porn features that I haven't yet been able to offload on a distributor. Wanna be my salesman?
