Cal/OSHA leads the anti-condom crusade. Never mind the obvious government overreach, the department largely ignores the pertinent issues and instead uses the hearings as a form of "shock and awe" strike at the industry. This shows that the commission really has made up its mind and now the issue is onto the bureaucratic sausage factory, which thankfully is incredibly slow. Still, it's a real travesty for an industry that just wants to be left alone. All that Cal/OSHA (doesn't that slash imply that both departments are dually represented? They're not - the actions of Cal/OSHA refer specifically to acts carried out solely by state officials, not federal bureaucrats.) can accomplish is running adult entertainment companies out of the Golden State. Let's face it - we consumers want condom-free porn and one state's regulation wouldn't crush an industry needing to satisfy this very basic demand. The long-term solution of relocating "the porn empire" is unfortunately hampered by the predatory behavior of pirates. Where's the Attorney General's office there? Oh well...Maybe the porn empire should move to Sin City or find a new San Fernando Valley. Florida's pretty much California East. Perhaps New York or New Jersey could accommodate the industry? Should the porn industry just decentralize? "Hollywood" is leaving Hollywood. [ invalid url ] "Porn Valley" will leave California. What happens from there? AHF says they'll go state-to-state but they'll be hard-pressed to find a state bureaucracy with the power, appetite, and ideological bent the likes of Cal/OSHA. Don't count out Washington though, the District of Columbia that is. Notes: I'm brand new here so if this is too political of a discussion, the moderators can rightly move it - I'll follow. I grew up in Southern California and worked extensively in The Valley. It'd be a shame to see those entirely discreet office buildings, that literally no one knows house the offices of the most profitable "smut" on the planet, boarded up because of some state officials' personal disdain for adult entertainment. They're the real "vampires" of The Valley that Tom Petty sang about. Lastly, I am fully aware that many in the industry do wish that condoms become a staple, if not a requirement in such a field. I don't work or have any connection to it, other than loyal fan and customer, so I will refrain from attempting to address the internal battles regarding this issue. I'm only interested in state action.
It is a far greater legal risk to shoot outside of California where production is not a protected First Amendment right than dealing with CalOSHA here in Porn Valley.

As far as I can see from the perspective of an outside observer, this AIDS Healthcare Foundation -- which is not a governmental body -- is the entity which is responsible for pushing this issue so hard, not Cal/OSHA. The big players in the business ought to be investigating the shit out of the AHF people to try to discredit them or at least find out what is really motivating them.
Cal/OSHA's committee "hearings" suggest that the department is the strongest foe as it is the most powerful, and very much in line with the aims of the AHF.
