| Mythsong Member 306 Posts 8/02 | I just finished watching this. I have to say that I had mixed feelings. It was a really good movie - with some sex thrown in. It didn't hold together for me as well as The Opening of Misty Beethoven, even if I thought that it was, perhaps, even closer to a mainstream movie. It was also great to see a good movie of a different genre. My problem was that there wasn't enough explicit sex. I didn't mind the scenes being short, and I really enjoyed seeing the intermixed cuts between mainstream scenes and sex scenes, but you just didn't see enough of what was going on. TOOMB had scenes that were no longer, but you saw more of what was happening when they were shown. However, I was, again, awestruck by the acting ability and scripting of this movie. Perhaps even moreso than with TOOMB. There really is a huge difference between these classics and what you get these days when it comes to that aspect of things. Unfortunately, if I had to rate it, I'd probably only give it 3 1/2 stars because, even though it's excels in terms of all of its good points, there's just enough of a lack of explicitness (by which I don't mean acts, or graphic close-ups, but just being able to see what's happening - several shots were in darkness or otherwise hidden). It's too hardcore to be considered softcore, but it's too softcore to "quite" be hardcore all the way through. So you're left feeling slightly confused. Ironically, I would give it a higher score if there were less explicit sex (what there is of it) just so that the tone remained consistent. I'm still waiting for a copy of Taboo to arrive. So far, the classics that I've remembered from my youth have not disappointed me when seeing them again - in fact, I've enjoyed them even more. (Despite what SueR says. <grin>) I hadn't seen Amanda By Night before, but I have seen Taboo and, from what I can remember, I think I'll like it a lot when looking at it with some fresh eyes. Veronica Hart is great though. I miss this sort of porn star. Charisma and intelligence do much for me. And I can finally see what makes GGG go ga-ga for Gillis. He was sexy in this one. |

Unlike loop carriers or all-sex movies, feature films need to be just that; a seamless integration of sex and narrative where each compliments the other. Therefore, if a sex scene doesn't fit into the plot, there's no reason for it. Same goes with length: in order to maintain pacing, you can't throw in 6, 7, 8, 9 min sex scenes and expect the audience to stay focused on the rest of the film. The genius of Metzger was his ability to have sex be the plot, meaning actors would talk while fucking, and usually the plot would involve sex. But there are only so many movies which can be made about sex and AMANDA, which is a thriller involving prostitutes, is not "about" sex. |

Kind of hard to maintain that feel in a more compressed delivery. |
