I'm reviewing this one as we speak. I had a lot of expectation after Gene Ross raved about it during the Aurora Snow lunch the other day.

I'm curious if anyone else has seen it and what your reactions are? (Feel free to email me if you can't keep it nice.)

Personally I've got a nice list of questions for Guy Capo, though I doubt I'll be invited over anytime soon once the review hits.

I wonder if there is a market for this kind of smut? I know that over-produced movies are big in the couples market (or so we're told), but are raincoaters looking for this?

Hey Tom,

Sorry, I was kidding with that remark. I learned long ago that you are one of the people who not afraid of a bad review.

The main point of the review is to find out a little bit about the rest of the audience. Maybe Guy has found something that thousands of fans have been dying for. I'd like to hear from them.

Oh, and I don't think the review is that bad anyway. I really appreciate the technical stuff that Guy brings to the table. For a first effort, it's damn impressive.

Thanks for the reply....got those interview questions ready to go?

Tom, any chance of using Ron Jeremy in every movie of EE? I love to see that guy take on cute girls any way he can ;-)

After reading Selena's glowing review, I rented American Gunk. While it wasn't awful, my suspicion is that I have more in common with Rog's POV than Selena's. Since it really wasn't my cup of tea (and because I have a boatload of porn to review as it is), I won't be writing a review of it, but here are a few bullet points:

Plus
- Refreshing, creative take that departs from the normal "interview followed by fucking" M.O.; reminds me a lot of a harder Anders Manga
- Less porn-starlet looking performers for the most part
- "Spin The Bottle" and "Molested by America" are solid and creative scenes.

Minus
- Way too many quick edits, creative effects, and on-screen text.
- Ron Jeremy as Elvis...having sex
- Anti-censorship soapbox vehicle (I see enough of that here)
- Extras disc is pretty barebones; about 1/2 of a disc worth of actual content
- Sex does not rise to the level of great gonzo/all-sex

Wow, and people say that my reviews are "too long." :-)

Nice review. I feel sorry for any movie that she doesn't like though because it's going to get hammered!

After finishing the movie and watching the bonus disc, I think that Guy Capo is a very skilled film maker. There is a lot to like on the technical end, but sexually it reminds me of Acid Sex.

One thing I did notice from this movie is how sad the state of male talent is these days. With RLD, WCP and PXP locking up most of the really good males, other companies are left with...well gunk mostly. Ron Jeremy is an icon, but he's got nothing left in the tank.

Full review will be done later today.

I will try to explain my POV on a film like American Gunk...

As I said in my review, I do NOT think that all porn should be made like Gunk was. I do NOT think that PXP, RLD, Sineplex, Evil Angel, and Anabolic etc. have it all wrong. Michael Stefano, Joey Silvera, Vince Voyeur should not start wondering if they need to reinvent their style. :)

On the contrary, the average person sitting down for a nice "release" before bedtime on an average day will prefer to grab their favorite title from their favorite director or studio and settle in for some "regular style" porn.

I am using the term "regular style" very carefully. I do not mean to imply "boring". There is a huge difference in the quality of "regular style". There are directors who capture "regular style" porn brilliantly and ones who fail.
Tom Byron himself would fit into the "regular style" wouldn't he?

But the one refrain I have heard on this board many times is "is there any way to come up with something new?" and "I am tired of seeing the same setups, the same teases, the same sexual formula".

American Gunk is that....

If RLD, PXP, EA, Anabolic, Sineplex, etc. porn is the Mercedes that you drive to work every day AND would choose to work on every normal day then it is doing something right.

American Gunk to me is an exotic car like a Ferrarri. Now let me define that before it is minsinterpted. I do not mean Ferrari as in that it is BETTER than the Mercedes. I mean in that it is exotic and fun and you are going to love driving it on a fun occasion but it isn't as practical to use every single day as the Mercedes, right? But, boy, do you love pulling it out for a spin when you feel like it...

(NOTE: I have seen many Ferraris amongst the owners of Porn Studios and they might actually disagree with me on using a Ferrari every day. :)

American Gunk does break all the "porn rules"; it is very entertaining; it does bring a level of film making craft that we don't see many times in porn.

American Gunk is the type of porn movie I would put in when I want to be entertained as well as excited. American Gunk is the movie I would chose if I needed porn playing on the big screen for a party. American Gunk is a porn movie I would want to have seen if I considered myself a "porn fan" or a "porn critic".

I fully appreciate the POV that Saki or Roger bring to the table on American Gunk. I think they are evaluting it as they do all their films to give the reader the heads up on whether the film is going to meet their daily jack-off needs. And, I agree that Gunk is not the average choice for the average jack-off day. Believe me, I have no where near the knowledge base of a professional like Roger and I totally get where he is coming from.

I am trying to say something different than Roger perhaps. Roger is right if you compare Guy Capo's American Gunk and Tom Byron's Meat Pushin in the Seat Cushion (two movies from the same studio) and says the average jack-off will pick Meat Pushin. But, I am saying you should grab Meat Pushin for the average jack-off and grab Gunk for the experience of porn that entertains, has a message, and is a fun thrill ride to watch.

Just like sometimes you go the movie theater to see a comedy to unwind and sometimes you go to a 3 hour long drama for a completely different reason.

That is what I love about what Tom Byron is doing with Evolution Erotica. He is taking the chance that a porn audience will like that mix and variety.

Here is who I think will like Gunk:

-People who like features, and want to find a gonzo that has the same entertainment factor.

-Female and couple audiences

-Gonzo (raincoaters?) who are looking for an entertaining, fucked-up, music video thrill ride to add to their collection and pull it out when the mood hits

-People of any "category" who appreciate solid film making and have been longing to see it in porn

Here is who I think will NOT like Gunk:

-Die-hard, hardcore gonzo fan that demand only wall-to-wall Skeeter Kerkove fucking or nothing (Note: I like Skeeter movies; I have been in several!).

Please remember what I said when Drew and Steph approached me about having a porn star write porn reviews from the "inside"- I am NOT a review professional. That is Roger's department. I encourage people who read my reviews to also go and search out the other ADT reviewers and the outside pros like Roger and cavr.com, etc. They do it for real and know what they are talking about. I have a HUGE amount of respect for them and what they do (100% more since I have tried to do what they do! :) What I write is only a porn girl's opinon. I just feel pretty strong on this one... LOL

What I would really find interesting???

Would Roger actually post his questions for Guy Capo here and let Guy Capo reply to them here?

Have Lindi, YogaGrrl, and Dumblonde seen this movie? What do they think about it? (I am very curious on the female slant here)

Have the other ADT review legends - bono-one, astro, mlyons, aybesea, flash, etc. seen it?

Skronker - have you seen it yet???

Does that clear up at all where I am on this film? Does that help to explain why I really, really like it and would encourage everyone to have it in their collection? Can't we have "must-own's" for porn collectors just like you had to buy the Matrix when it came out in mainstream?

Just to clarify, I tend not to be in the "daily jack off needs" camp. I have a high degree of affinity for traditional cinematography (both mainstream and adult) and eroticism and less on ultra-hardcore and circus act porn. I happen to like Andrew Blake, who many people say is an artistic bore. But I also like Passolini, Kramski, Ninn, Manga, and others who push the creative envelope. And, for the record, I tend not to like Skeeter's work.

I don't disagree with Selena's assessment at all. Since porn is almost completely subjective, I think rational minds can and should disagree. And I don't think anyone needs to be "qualified" to be a reviewer--everyone has an opinion, and as long as it's sufficiently justified and not arbitrary, that's great.

I guess I was also a bit bothered that Guy Capo seemed to be trying to make an experimental and activist film like Kramski tried to do with America XXX. It was a little to forced and a little too insincere for me to relax and enjoy.

Just my two cents,

Sure, when the review is done I'll ask Guy some questions. I'd rather put them all together in an interview which I'm sure we can do.

By the way, I liked your review and I think that Gunk has a lot to offer. I'm just still trying to figure out if people are looking for this type of porn. (I ask the same thing about certain aspects of couples porn.)

I appreciate good technical values as much as anyone.

In the end, as a rookie effort, Gunk will be better receieved than Anal Ball and look at how much I've come to love some of Zupko's work.

Well its real nice to see that some reviewers aren't afraid to post bad reviews. Even though I don't think any review is bad but it adds credibility to the reviewer. When I first started to read porn reviews many many years ago I relied upon them to my individual tastes. It didn't take me too long to figure out that many reviews were simply bullshit and quickly tuned out of reading reviews and buying film review magazines. I simply went out on my own finding movies that I liked and sticking with the series or directors.
