I have never done this before, but I am begging you to check out this review and this movie. This is my favorite porn movie I have ever seen, and it was the 1st ever 5-star rating I have given a movie. Note: I am not saying the "best ever"; I am saying "my favorite ever". :)
Can you imagine sitting down and watching a porn flick from beginning to end without breaking? Don't you normally finish your business and put it aside and pick it back up the next time?
This one rocks!!!! I watched it from start to finish 3 times already. I really, really hope that it does well; I think it is an amazing debut film for a first-time director.
Can you post me your feedback on the review and then what you thought of the movie when you see it?
GUY CAPO AND HIS NEXT MOVIE: "Sex, Drugs, & Rock n Roll" I just spent two days this week working on the set of Guy Capo's second film -"Sex, Drugs, & Rock-n-Roll" .
After seeing American Gunk, I could not wait to be in a Guy Capo film. And, two days with him was what I expected.
This film is about a rock and roll band and how they party hard with drugs and sex. It is a combination feature, gonzo, and music video all mixed up with each other.
It is the next step up from American Gunk. When you see Gunk, you will know what I mean.
The entire score is orginal music penned for the movie by a band Guy was friends with. He even got the guitarist from that band to play the lead guitarist in this movie. And, that guy rocked....
I got to play a groupie who was able to get into "party" with the band. After filming my scene and my dialouge/acting, etc. on day one, Guy asked me back for another scene on day two. Yeah!!!
The band is played by Dick Smothers, Jr., Tony Tedischi, Tony Sexton, and Max - the real rock and roll man. Dick Nasty plays the band's manager.
I worked with Felicia Fox and Allysin Chaynes. I fucked Dick Smothers, Jr. and Tony Tedischi. There is a host of other girls in the film including Ariana Jolle and Taylor Rain.
I am more proud to be in this movie than anything I have ever done AND I LOVE the work I have done.
I'll be interested to see what the feedback will be once everybody gets a chance to see this release. I for one, no disrespect to Selena, didn't like it. The style of editing, quick jump-cuts and footage shot in black-and-white, then color, then black-and-white again I found to be distracting more than entertaining. The quick cutting made it difficult for me to get into each scene.
I also think some folks may not like the Cherry scene as it is SUPER ROUGH and very much like a "Slap Happy" scene though without the slapping.
I do give props to Guy Capo for coming up with something different and I will definitely check out his stuff in the future. This is just my opinion so no offense to anybody. Looking forward to reading other thoughts on "American Gunk."
I have been to the DVD store TWICE looking for this movie, and it's not on the shelves. Other EE titles are, and it's not like the store doesn't carry titles because of issues with content (they got plenty of Euro-style pissing and fisting movies with fat ladies in rubber catsuits and pointy-eared face masks -- so, ya know, the sky's the limit).
I think I'll contact Evolution directly -- or else mail order from ADE or someplace. Sheesh! Talk about "consumer panic"!
For an ADT vet like yourself, you must know how easy it is to click on the Price Search link here on ADT, then click on your favorite online retailer, and then fill out the order and have it shipped straight to you... LOL
Tom-
Yes, the Cherry Poppins scene was too rough for me too. I mentioned in my review that I am not into the "puking", etc. There was enough other hot stuff in the movie that I can just skip a scene like that (although I loved the rap/rant/song in front of that scene).
Oh, and NO offense taken. :) Taste is different for everyone and no one should ever feel slighted because their taste is different. We are all different.
Does this style porn have huge Female appeal???
I am very curious whether this style of porn is a huge hit with females. I personally found this DVD to be the sexiest I had ever watched. I really do love it.
I asked my hubby what he thought and he said he loved it too; that it was a total jack-off flick for a male.
Then I showed it to one of my other girlfriends (not in the business) and asked her what she thought. She also said it was one of her all-time favorites to watch.
I DON'T want all my porn to be this style (as I also mentioned in my review) - there is a need for the "regular" stuff you see every day. That is easier to pop in for a 10-15 minute "pleasure ride" and then just turn off.
But, I would love to see more of this stuff. This is not a REPLACEMENT for regular stuff; it is a ENHANCEMENT in that no one else is doing it and it is a great change of pace.
Did that make any sense?
Have any females watched this and can they post their thoughts on the style? Any couples? What do people who normallly like features think? Or, people who normally like gonzo?
Selena, I do order from online folks sometimes, it's just usually 1) Cheaper, 2) Faster and 3) more convenient to buy from a store in NYC -- usually I pay a flat $18 for a new DVD, unless it's from Evil, and then it's 2 bucks more.
I have enough kickback cash to probably order American Gunk for free, so I'll probably do that. Very interested to see it, specifically because of your enthusiasm (otherwise, I doubt I would give it a second thought, just because I get burned almost every time I buy something untried and untested, and the casting, for the most part, did not make fire alarms go off in my head).
The mixed up film stock sounds cool, and the way the scenes are varied is very appealing. More than anything in porn right now, I want to see the formula for a gonzo movie destroyed: Burn the couches! Dispense with the orderly parade from oral to vaginal to anal to cumshot! Fuck shit up! Get crazy!
Or video. Whatever. I meant different visual effects. "Film stock" is my brain's way of describing that. I'm assuming it's all digital video, probably shot on a Canon XL-1 or similar. (I wonder if anyone's shot in 24p porn yet with that new Panasonic, or tried the JVC HDTV camera)?
You what would be cool? Revved-up Super-8 film. I know the cameras are out there,
Just read Selena Silvers' great review (Keep up the good work Ms. Silver ), and was wondering about the deleted scene - is there any chance it will be included on the European release of this movie?
It was shot with a Panasonic 24 fps camera which gives video something very close to a "film look."
The thing that stands out in this movie for me is the pacing, structure and PHENOMENAL editing. I do think the cast for Sex, Drugs,& Rock and Roll is a little better, though. I'm really looking forward to seeing it!
I think Guy is the best thing that's happened to this industry in a long time. I'm certainly glad I discovered him!
You know what, skronker? We have a after-effect installed called Cine-Look that can duplicate that effect perfectly! If you watch some of my montages and title sequences, you'll see what I mean.
The DVX100 is a nifty little camera, and there's no doubt the 3:2 pull down has an effect on the viewing experience; even if the viewer isn't consciously aware of it, they feel it.
But the DVX100 doesn't doesn't shoot 16:9, and for sheer image quality and control, doesn't match up to even an old UVW100, let alone a real BetaCam.
Crystal sync even! Super 8 has a great look, but it's such a specialty item now that it costs just as much to shoot and telecine as Super 16, and when you shoot Super 16 you have an image that exceeds even the best HD systems, like Dulca and Viper. Unless I specifically want the S8 look, I shoot 16mm.
Wow -- awesome camera, Tom. Er, Tony. I mean -- well, yeah, both of yuhs.
Of course, the Super8 model costs as much as a good digi-cam!
I don't know. I'm thinking about writing a porn script and shooting my own erotic short film sometime, 'cos I know I can get it right -- at least, in the World of Sexy Movies According to Skronker.
But the costs? To do what I'd want to do, I'm sure I'd need 100 grand, or a very willing crew of punk-rockers with art aspirations. I may go talk to Joe Gallant here in town.
ANyway, I am sitting out the camera format wars for a bit. Eventually, I want to get a high-end video movie camera, but I wanna wait until I can really get a lot of bang for my three grand.
I only finally got a digital camera, so I want to learn that first. My buddy Scooter (not ADT Scooter) shoots and edits a lot of local amateur stuff -- weekend gangbang parties in suburban New Jersey with piles of black hookers, that sort of thing which, uh, isn't my sort of thing, but Scooter's inspired and flexible and way sicker than Khan Tusion even on his off-days -- so I may also talk with him. He knows his shit.
I wander off-topic, but Tom, how much do you budget for one of your productions? I don;t want you to feel like your giving up any trade secrets (and I don't need to know the rates the girls charge for giving up the pooper), but just like a ballpark figure. To do it in high style, with all the technical razzle-dazzle you can muster?
I still prefer the good ol' Sony VX2000. It's still the most porn-friendly camera in that it's very mobile and user friendly, which is important for shooting porn because you don't want to be fucking around adjusting the camera during a spontaneous moment or a cumshot! The Panasonic tends to change color balance in the middle of a shot, especially when you're shooting with natural light. Also, I don't have a wide angle lens for the Panasonic, which is important when shooting sex they way I do. It gives you more of a "you are there" perspective. It depends. When I direct a movie, the costs are minimal. The biggest part of my budget is talent. I shoot, edit and don't have to pay myself a director's fee. My crew consists of DJ my still guy, Ivan E. Rection my P.A. and Behind the Scenes videographer, ( in addition to penning a column for my website,) and both of these guys are on salary. Add a make-up artist and location fee, there's not a whole lot I spend on a Tom Byron directed movie. As a matter of fact, since I require ALL my directors to be able to shoot and edit their own productions, I save even more. I'd rather spend it on talent.
It's not wise to spend too much on "razzle dazzle" unless you're shooting a cable version, which I found stifles the way I can get real heat out of the performers. The market can only bear so much. You can shoot a phenomenal movie with a whole lotta money, but unless you have a cable version, you really don't have a prayer of making any real money back.
Bottom line is, try to do as much of the technical razzle dazzle yourself , and you'll have a lot better chance of turning a profit. Remember, Guy Capo got his foot in the door spending less than $500.
I'd be interested to see what you come up with. Do a demo and let me take a look at it. You never know, you could be the next Guy Capo!
That goes for anyone else. If you think you have what it takes, do what Guy did. Put your money where your mouth is and shoot! You COULD get lucky!
Cool, Tom. I could only dream of being the next God-like pornographer -- but, hey, who knows? I've seen enough and I am twisted enough, and I know cinema (and sinema) inside and out, so I will take you up on the offer. In fact, you have inspired me!
Give me 'til Christmas, and we'll see what happens.
Earlier this year I was very close to buying 3 DVX100 cameras, but didn't because their were a number of changes between the camera Panasonic previewed and the one they actually put into production. But I haven't ruled out the camera for use in the future, especially since the 24p would intercut so nicely with the film we shoot.
Are you saying the camera shifted color balance while it was locked at a particular white balance setting? Or is the camera's color temp. so sensitive/responsive that you were getting unnatural looking shifts while shooting on automatic?
I only used the Panasonic a couple of times when my Sony was in repair. I don't know why, but sometimes when I was shooting the picture would turn bluish all of a sudden, and I would have to re-adjust it. Not to say that the Panasonic is a bad camera,(Guy LOVES it!) I just prefer the Sony for my style of shooting. I think the Panasonic is more suited to Guy's, and probably yours, since you shoot film. I'm more of a traditional pornographer, Guy is more of a film maker.
I like that Guy's movies have a different look and feel than mine. It's all about diversity. There's so many "gonzo" shooters out there that are clones of each other. Everyone wants to be the next Stagliano or Seymore. I want Evolution to be a company where each director brings their own unique style and vision. I'd rather have, for better or worse, a stable of shooters that dare to think beyond the realm of what's trendy now - meat-puppets with camcorders.
With the reviews American Gunk is getting it looks like it's going to be a run away hit. Why not plow the profits back into the product and send Guy out with an Aminima on his next project. It's Super16mm camera that's as small as a camcorder, but mounts Ziess superspeed lenses.
Can you imagine what Guy's next film would look like? All the heat and energy of handicam gonzo with the viseral, visual punch of real film. That would be a ball-drainer for sure, and ground breaking porn to boot!
I was wondering, what 16mm camera(s) you use and what stock you prefer? I would love to see some of your work.
My background is extensively in film which is why this sparked my interest. I have directed and DPed (director of photography) many shot on 16 Indy Films (main-stream). In my collection I have 21 Super-8 cameras (only a few work) and a working non-sync 16mm Canon Scoopic-M. I have shot many films with that Canon and love it's easy videocamera-like feel, quick loading (only 100' loads), and fast lens.
Film is my number one love which is why I love the look the Panasonic Guy uses. It's not film but it definitely gives you that feel. BTW, did I mention that I LOVED American Gunk.
A few thoughts about Super-8. I have shot on that format as well as know many who have as well. It's very unforgiving with shadows and lighting ratios. It's latitude is not very good, meaning you need to really know how to light and use a light meter... otherwise you might get footage that is not what you expected. If you want the Super-8 look, take Tom Byron's advise and shoot on video and give a that grungy look in post. I actually now people who shot on 16mm then dragged their negative on the ground before having it printed at the lab to give it that dirty, grungy feel. Go figure.
SEX, DRUGS & ROCK AND ROLL was a great flick, shot very nicely and with steaming sex...except didn't the main guy (can't remember his name) look like French Stewart from THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN?
Kind of distracted me from when he analised Selena Silver.
Did he squint his eyes at you Selena and say, 'Oh, I don't know about that Dick.'
(Ultrasiet = Sietel from your yahoo fan group, BTW Selena.)
Surely Guy can now utilise the dude's talents in a porn spoof of THIRD ROCK. I make these following suggestions:
the Kirsten Johnston character - Julie Silver with voice-over the John Lithgow character - Dick Nasty with some height the Joseph Gordon leavett character - Erik Everhard with less height the walk-on black dude with the funky sideburns who chips in during the bukakke on Arianna Jollee's face - that's a part I just wrote for myself.
Hey, Gang... I'm flattered that there's a renewed buzz for the AMERICAN GUNK / S.D.R.N.R. projects. Sorry I have not been up on this thread lately...I've been working on the next guy capo release, "PAYBACK: The Evolution of a Gangbang"...the trailer for which should be up and running by day's end on the evolutionerotica.com website.
A few responses to this ongoing coversation...
1) You don't have to pull your dick out and squirt all over your screen to appreciate AMERICAN GUNK...and I like that about the film. It's entertaining to watch, and you might even find a scene that "does it for you", and feel compelled to sponge one out. But for the most part, the film was made for the guy who has a closet full of quality jerk-material, and just wants something new from his erotica, with a little God Damn entertainment value. When you want to jerk off until your dick blisters up, watch Tom Byron's MEAT PUSHIN' or JUST ASS FOR ALL or SODOMY SANDWICHES. When you want to smoke a bowl and watch everything erotic film has to offer without having to search through a bunch of tapes, put in AMERICAN GUNK. It's like watching MTV, MAD TV, and porn at the same time.
2) The Panasonic DVX100 is the finest pain in the ass you can work with right now. It can be as friendly and versatile as a Sony VX2000 when used properly, or it can be as demanding and technical as a film camera when used in 24P mode...the latter, naturally, being my preference, because of the texture it adds to the finished product. 30FPS Video is clean and beautiful, but 24P has character.
3) Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll just received two pre-nominations from the AVN...best soundtrack, and best non-sex role to Dick Nasty. I realize neither of these nominations pertain to the sexual content of the film (which I still believe is red hot...better than GUNK for sure), but it is testimony to how entertaining a guy capo film really is...which was my whole reason for getting into the business in the first place...provide complete entertainment, not just porn. It's a funny fuckin' film, and it has great sex to boot. It's shot much cleaner than GUNK, has much better production value overall, and is a very well written and well rounded fuck flick. I'm proud of the project as a whole, and very happy with the individual performances, with minor exceptions that ended up adding to the comedy of the film anyway.
4) The deleted scene from GUNK is still shelved and there are no immediate plans to release it. I'm sure it will hit the streets eventually, not on store shelves, but available somehow, sometime this year. That scene is a very sticky wicket, and EVOLUTION EROTICA as a whole has other issues to address before we wrestle with the technicalities of releasing a very controversial scene. Be patient, and I promise you, it will be well worth the wait.
5) The "Third Rock" guy you speak of is Tony Tedeschi, and he gets that comment a lot. Funny thing is, he has a striking resemblance to the lead singer of the Luxury Pushers, who's music scored most of the film. If you don't have their CD, you can get it through their website (luxurypushers.com), or just play the soundtrack available on the bonus disk of the SDRNR 2-Disk set. These guys are friends of mine from Ohio, and are definitely a band to be on the lookout for. Up-n-commers who are definitely going places.
Thanks for all the commentary, be it re-posts from the past or renewed interests in the present, and be on the lookout for ever-improving guy capo product coming soon.
That's true about "Gunk," Guy. I finally sat and watched it thru the other night, and got a kick out of it. Just think if it was mysteriously aired on NBC some night, thanks to a hijacking of the network machinery ...
(ooops, I know people at NBC ... better be careful putting these ideas out there .... ;)]]
It has been really fun watching every project Guy Capo take on get better than the one before. Remember - Gunk was the first thing he ever shot. SDRR was the second and made such HUGE strides over Gunk.
I loved being in SDRR and I loved watching it. I am glad to see that it is getting the credit it deserves now.
I am even more excited for Guy Capo's next project: Payback. PLEASE....Check out the Payback Trailer
This is unique for a gangbang.... a gangbang with a plot, script, and a total twist.
Think "Memento", but porn.
Two girls (Katrina Kraven and Selena Silver) get gangbanged. The movie is shot in reverse starting with the gangbang and ending by answering the question- "how did this girl end up in this situation?"
I am really proud of the job Katrina and I did filming this and I am FULLY confident in the ability of Guy Capo to edit this thing so it ends up looking like the picture that is in my head.
Funny that Skronker should make reference to a "hijacked broadcast" of AMERICAN GUNK. While writing the film, I felt like I was hijacking network television to a certain degree...maybe that energy was captured in the film somehow.
Just for the record, Selena Silver speaks very highly of my work and has an honest appreciation for what I do...but make no mistake about it, I owe more to her than she owes to me. Mutual ego-stroking aside, Selena has been an instrumental factor in the success of SDRNR, and the same will apply to PAYBACK. Nobody watched my first two films because they wanted to see who I was!! They wanted to see the PUSSY I shot, and without the gorgeous cast of gashes I've had to work with, and their willingness to promote their own product, I would be FAR from where I am now, not quite one year into the business.
Thank you Selena. Thank you ADT folk, new and regulars alike. And thank you, Tom Byron, for opening your doors to me.
I really liked SDRNR. A great feature where the sex has the intensity of a gonzo. I also liked American Gunk. Guy, your approach to porn is very unique. I look forward to seeing your future work.
While the pussy you shot was indeed top-notch, I rented SDRNR because I heard wonderful things about YOU. I have yet to see AG; tho the trailer for PAYBACK has whet my appetite for that one as well... if for no other reason, than has been mentioned in other threads; the rest of this gonzo shit is just so much the SAME... it's nice to see someone shooting "harder" stuff with some thought behind it as "entertainment."
