Yes, by all means, go anamorphic rather than letterboxed wide-screen.

I'm slowly but surely switching over to shooting everything in HDV for the forseeable future. When the media becomes more affordable and practical for the Panasonic HVX100 I'll be switching to that camera permanently. DVCPROHD is light years beyond what Sony, Canon and JVC are doing with HDV presently but I digress.... My question is - does the average consumer - not the technologically advanced beings who frequent this forum - do they understand the difference between widescreen and anamorphic? I've shot 2 HDV movies thus far and have downconverted them both to standard widescreen. Outputting them as anamorphic is as simple as choosing the appropriate sequence preset but the concern at the company has been that the "unsophisticated user" might not understand that they need to set up their DVD player to display an anamorphic disc in letterbox on a 4:3 television if it doesn't do so automatically. Suddenly there could be a whole group of consumers believing that our discs are defective because all of the actors looked "squished". I'm not looking for a concrete answer necessarily but some informed opinions would be much appreciated. Sooner or later everything will be HD and 16X9 will be the majority of TV sets sold in the world but until then... widescreen or anamorphic? Edited by - Mike Quasar on Feb 16 2006 [Link] |

They'd be wondering why porn looks different than mainstream. IMO, if you're shooting widescreen and not taking advantage of anamorphic processing, then you just wasted your money buying that HD camera. Edited for spelling.
