Angel, he said, was angle -- an angle of light, coming into the earthly sphere indirectly, since light must enter almost sideways because of the chemical makeup of the atmosphere, which ny nature deflects direct approach. Angles, light darting in ... I'm watching this Johnny Darko flick, and grooving on his light. I went to a few porn sets in recent weeks, and I know that they look mostly like what you see. There;s not a lot of transformative effort put into visual design on these babies, let's face it. John Leslie does some different stuff, but even a master such as he coasts on a style that has served him for about 10 years. Darkko has refined it. He shoots against the white like an artist. He turns reality into something genuinely cinematic. Harry Callahan, the late great innovator and teacher of photography, did some amazing work late in his life that resulted in photos that looked like this: Beach people in their colorful suits, little stick figures really, walkng along as if submerged in a field of milk. The images are glorious, testament to a master;s control and manipulation of light -- rulebreaking use of light, madly overexposed use ... all white out. Yet, flickering with color, like goldfish flashing against the transparent billows of water and light. Darkko is on the same trip. It's fucking pop art. And the first indication I've had (outside of some Andrew Blake, but he's on another trip) that porn might somehow aspire to true cinematic art. I mean, Katja Kassin's ass in and of itself is art and ART, and magnificent sculpture, but watching this movie I'm suddenly aware that there's a new thing going on, that somebody finally GETS it, gets ME anyway -- that this is what I've been waiting for, this real vision of porn cinematography, this painting in light, that no one else is really chasing, and it's exciting, because it means that porn might actually be about more than the jack action, or the wacky humor or the baseball bat -- God love it all -- and could aspire to something wholly other. Plus, well, Jennifer Luv. Who can have all my babies if there is a just and merciful God.

This is the first I've really seen of your stuff, and was checking out the Taylor Rain BTS sequence (just kind of skipped through the first time checking out bits of scenes), which totally reminded me of a series Callahan took in Cape Cod, on the beach, in the late 1980s, where he managed, pretty much, to erase everything but the suggestion of figures strolling on the beach. And I realized, damn, I haven't seen this in a porn movie before. I met him back a few years before he died. Very cool dude -- he never stopped shooting until the end. It was just weird to make the association while staring at Taylor Rain's butt wiggling in the air, but art is where you find it, right? [Link] |
