^I don't think Annette would have done porn if she had to do what most of todays performers wind up doing. Just look at the number of performers from her era who managed to have decent careers and never did anal or more extreme things. Annette was a very good actress above being an amazing porn performer but she limited herself to mostly, solo, g/g and pretty vanilla b/g porn. I always felt that she exude a level of class that I associate with old Hollywood actresses. She still looks good in her 60's. I've yet to see a single performer that can match her in looks and talent but hopefully one day one will rise to the challenge.

Annette and Constance Money were my favourite stars back then. It seems each time we watched a film, there was something interesting on the screen, nothing mecanical or boring. There were unpredictable events happening, a little more fantasy, directors taking risks... The old good time!!! No, there are other reaons to watch what is done these days, but Annette was in a class of her own.

I'm not saying the sex isn't hot, but porn used to have a great aura about it. While cheap and sleazy is fun, that's all it is anymore. And yes, Constance is a great one as well, though I don;t think i'd put here in the elite level.
I saw my share of Annette Haven movies way back then. You couldn't avoid her anyways, she appeared often. Since most films had plots, performers had to do some acting. Annette wasn't bad, although she had a tendency to overact. She played bitchy better than anything else. As for her appearance, her very white skin stood out. There wasn't much tanning going on for her. Found her attractive, but not beautiful and best suited for slow, romantic sex scenes. Recall her saying most women in porn didn't know how to eat pussy, so I'm guessing she had some experience away from the camera.

Annette had an ethereral, mysterious quality that would be near impossible to capture in modern gonzo. Too bad De Palma wasn't able to use her in Body Double as he intended.
Several people who worked with her over the years would argue she wasn't just "playing" that type of role. She was in a relationship with Bonnie Holiday (now there is an underrated performer from the 70s) for several years.
I think yours is the best description possible. She truly had an ethereal quality that I have never seen duplicated by another performer. I don't think gonzo porn is a medium that allows performers to shine and therefore not even Annette could shine in that type of porn. Not that she would have been interested. At least that's the feeling I got from watching her over the years. I agree about De Palma. I would have loved to see her work for any mainstream studio looking to hire her to play more than what most porn performers are usually expected to play in mainstream movies.
I'm not. Annette has been out of the industry for 20 plus years and I have yet to see one performer come close to her. She is truly one of a kind. I have noticed that porn isn't erotic anymore. The only exceptions I've come across are in some lesbian movies but even there it's not a regular thing. Gonzo being the norm by which most porn videos are now made makes it hard to have even a modicum of eroticism and what is probably worse for people like you and me is that there are probably few if any modern porn producers that would know how to shoot an erotic scene even if they wanted to. The only silver lining I currently see is that so called artcore porn seems to be gaining in popularity. It's still a kind of gonzo porn but it does require a higher level of technical knowledge to transcend from it's more common counterpart. This could mean that we will again have actual erotic porn movies to enjoy. For now I will keep enjoying those from by gone years.
