[rant ] So today I plugged in my Olympus digital camera for the first time since getting this system. Vista appears to be doing it's thing, looking for the driver. Naturally, it finally gives up and tells me to insert the disc that came with the camera. After digging through EVERY GODDAMN THING I OWN, I finally found the fucking thing. And then, Vista informs me that Olympus has informed them that there's "a compatibility issue" between Vista and this model. Gee, I'd never have guessed!  And then, it also informs me that Olympus has informed MS that they have no plans to fix the problem. So I guess everyone who bought a $400 fucking camera from them just a few years ago is just shitfucked because they can't be bothered to make some new firmware or whatever. I don't know who I'm more pissed at. Olympus or MS. Fortunately, the computer came with a multi format card reader so I can still get my photos but it's just a PITA to pull that card out and search for the right slot under my desk every time I want to transfer my pictures. One of the shitty things about digital cameras. I bought a film-based Minolta SLR quite a few years ago and I could probably still use the damn thing if I didn't mind going to have the film developed. Buy a digital camera and you never know if you'll even be able to use the thing in a few years or not. Which would be fine if they were cheap. And they're not. Not if you want halfway decent results anyway. [ /rant]  [Link] |

I have lots of cds and over the years I have pretty much quit using the plastic cases. So I have several very tall spindles (the things you buy cdr's on) filled with CDs that I had to look through the other day when microsoft broke my internet.  [Link] |

Go to the manufacturer's website and download the current drivers. This page, which is the very first link that comes up when you Google "Olympus digital camera Vista," seems to indicate that all of their cameras are now compatible with Vista. This page, which you could have found with about ten seconds worth of mouse-clicks after typing "olympus.com" into your browser's address bar, has links to all of the software downloads. In the unlikely event that you actually have a camera that is not Vista-compatible, so, you have to take a memory card out of the camera, plug it into the card reader, and plug the card reader into a USB port? What does that take, like 20 seconds? You're crying about this? Give me a break. Enough, already. Rant disallowed. [Link] |

It's a lot easier to just whip out a disc and pop it in a drive than it is to go hunting on Google for software. When I looked and found that it wasn't where I thought it was, I thought I knew where else I may have put it. And so on. By the time I realized I had no idea where it was, I'd spent so much time that I wasn't giving up until I found it. Unfortunately, the Camedia software is one of those that doesn't work with Vista. But CQ is right. Sometimes they do. I have other programs I used with XP that work OK with Vista. Google is a simple answer but often, you don't get the result you're looking for right away. Canon keeps that shit guarded. The software comes *free* with the camera* but there is no where on earth to download it legally. Checking out Canon forums will confirm the difficulty of this if you don't buy my story. The programs are called: Canon PhotoStitch 3.1 PhotoRecord 2.1 ZoomBrowser EX 4.6 and Camera Suite 1.3 I eventually got the discs from my sister but the software is not available for free from Canon. While this doesn't help, for now, I've got to believe they will make the software and drivers available to registered users of their products. I'm really quite surprised that Vista doesn't just recognize the camera as a USB drive without any software at all being involved. Oh well. [Link] |
