It was announced today at AVN that David Luger parted ways with Red Light/Platinum X. How many directors is that now in the last calendar year? Seriously I lost track. I’d say nearly ten???

I like the company and all, I have friends who work there, but WTF is going on? Is it the ownership, the conditions or just the directors wanting to move on to something better? I remember when PXP/RLD started with Jewel De’Nyle, Michael Stefano, etc. etc. it is was an up and coming company, which did in fact make some serious noise.

But now, WOW, something seems seriously wrong over there. I know a lot of people like their films, which I do like some of them too, but a lot of the product they have pushed in the last year or so has been cookie cutter pornography. That’s just my thoughts, feel free to weigh in.

Does anyone actually work at those companies any more?

Maybe management shake-ups?

No idea on why everyone is jumping ship. But Red Light District came out with a bang. They had some of the best all fuck, no nonsense titles, making lots of great porn, (maybe too much).

I really have no idea who is left there. It's all changed since '03, when I first met all those guys who were there at the time.

Porn is not the most stable industry and neither are those in it.
RLD/PXP became what Anabolic/Diablic were and now have a similar exodus.
It might be both directors and company. It is easier to reduce through attrition. They may have had some of the best gonzo directors out there, but because they worked together (in each others movies) so much, it all started looking the same. That is part of the reason it started looking cookie-cutter. That isn't just the last year, but two or three.
Besides, I seem to remember that RLD was doing a feature? And they did those Artcore flicks, so diversifying seems to be part of the plan.
I notice only one director moved definitely upwards though, EE.

Diversification was certainly the word. James Avalon was brought in to direct for the new RLD Films division, an outlet with a stated goal of pioneering a new gonzo-feature hybrid with a schedule calling for 1 feature a month. Of course, the real goal was probably to tap into the PPV market and earn some marketable prestige in the feature game. Avalon's first flick, Darkside, received plenty of AVN nominations, but in the end RLD cut the division after 5 titles amid Luke Ford rumors of low sales and contentious reactions from fellow RLD directors. Avalon disputed the rumors in a post here at ADT, stating that the move was not performance-based as RLD was simply putting a halt on production until they could finally set up the proper infrastructure to explore "cable and foreign sales." That was in early February.

In addition to the Films division, RLD released two experimental Manuel Ferrara films (i]Mind Fuck and Katsumi's Dirty Deeds ) and stepped in to become the new distributor for Ninn Worx. They even hired a sales person away from Vivid to handle the Ninn account. The actual Artcore films were done by Anabolic, but these particular moves by RLD were in the same vain.

However, at this point with RLD co-founders Dion Giarrusso and Vince Vouyer behind new companies, PXP co-founder Jewel De'Nyle a free agent, and various notable directors long gone it seems diversification has been scaled back in favor of a return to basics approach. Fitting in with current industry trends, the simple model is again streamlined product released through the seperate all-sex labels PXP, RLD, and the forthcoming Candy Shop, all of which is actually centralized. Also judging from what David Joseph said during the Jake Malone drama, it's likely that a philosophical change in dealing with directors has taken place, that is unless Del Toro, Cuba, and the other new guys are getting product ownership like their predecessors.

As best I can tell, the current directors are Jake Malone, Michael Stefano, John Strong, Brandon Iron (the longtimers), Juan Cuba, Martin Del Toro, Jean Claude Batiste, and Diana Devoe (the newbies).

very informative! The Avalon films were very promising but they probably didn't sell as well as their regular gonzo stuff. Personally, I rather watch one of those than most of the gonzos on the market today but I'm probably in the minority.

Does the Allie Ray nonsense contribute to this decision?

Hence the scaling back on diversification.
Still, I bet most couples would be more comfortable with the Avalon and Ninn stuff than gonzo.
If the Films division does get any PPV or hotel buisness, it all comes out better than distributing some lines they don't own.
Look who is still there: Brandon Iron, Stephano, & Malone. Its not like they won't be shipping stuff.

It's time to make great changes to the whole group, I think. Crisis also brings opportunity and porn biz is never dead. I get bad feels about those people loss at the beginning but now agree that nothing will keep unchanged.

I look forward to new talents and new elements shown up in the future.

Isn't Del Toro still there as well putting out fifteen titles a month?

Good riddance ... he consistently disappointed me. He handled a wide variety of promising titles but the same ol' antics, interviews and camera work made them all seem like the same ol' thing. My first impression was "Hardcore Training #5", which I liked, but I can't say any of the stuff I've seen afterwards was truly above average. If RLD/PXP is destroying and rebuilding, Brandon Iron, Mike Long and Jake Malone are a great start.

I think maybe it’s too much of a good thing. Their films are like assembly lines now. 15 films a month seem pretty excessive to me. How much diversity is in 15 titles in 30 days?

Maybe they could try doing some movies dedicated to fetishes like the Japanese do. Go with ideas that haven't been done yet or , at least , have not been done by mainstream companies using mainstream actresses.

here are some ideas :

g/g spit fetish video - this is a growing fetish
g/g kissing fetish video
g/g/b blowjob video - where the girls share tons of spit while blowing the guy ...and they concentrate on each other and the cock without looking at the camera. They can french kiss alot and spit into mouths alot while blowing the guy ...then when the guy cums , they can swap many times then have an EXTENDED cum kissing sequence WITHOUT looking at the camera so that they are just into each other.

here are some other ideas :

- reduce the camera movement
- have the girls dress a little more natural in some vids
- have the girls perform very nasty ( as always) but reduce the amount of yelling and swearing every 2 seconds. The swearing may be hot but they overdo it and it just gets annoying.
- change your formats from scene to scene and movie to movie. We all know that many vids and scenes are completely identical...try changing the order of events a little.

The current speculation at Lukeisback, AdultFYI, and XXXPT is that Luger was actually fired in connection to the Allie Rey situation as opposed to simply quitting.

However, here's something that's not just mere rumor as it comes with confirmation from David Joseph:

Production Shutdown At Red Light District

I (Luke Ford) email owner David Joseph: "Just hearing stuff such as a production shutdown."

He replies: "Yes, we are 6 month ahead. That’s all that is going on and nothing else."

Gene Ross reports that RLD employees have been asked to take a paycut.

David replies: "Call any of them yourself, it is absolutely not true."

RLD/PX are cutting back on ownership and that's a main reason so many have left.

That's kind of ironic when you consider that RLD was founded on giving ownership deals to all of the guys who couldn't get them from Anabolic/Diabolic while they were working there.

[/quote]6 months ahead, lets do the math. 8 titles per company=16 per month. 6 x 16 = 96 movies. thats a lot of fucking scenes to have shot in 6-8 months. lates, Von S.

While it was a great marketing tool for pulling directors from other companies it wasn't a sound business decision.

I do think the directors should own their product and be able to shop them around to different distributors but they should also have to cover all of their own production costs, payroll, etc. with no funding from the distributor. I don't know the details of the RLD/PXP production funding model but I suspect that RLD/PXP was covering most of the production costs and amortizing them into X pieces of product being shipped with no ownership compensation for directors until that X level was reached.

Also consider Luke Ford's recent sales stats for new releases typically selling 700 - 1000 pieces. It's really hard to recoup production costs at that level. So the directors never see residuals for their movies and the company is thrilled to simply cover the production costs on these initial 700 - 1000 units.
