If you are considering installing the new AVG version 9 you should read these two threads from the [ invalid url ]
You will understand, as I now do, why after installing this new version, my E: hard drive has been scanned (constantly) for about 16 hours and counting. [o\|]

AVG 9 figures prominently in this thread.
It's a fucking nightmare.
I uninstalled my PAID version -- with about seven months remaining.
Read about it in the other, linked to, thread.
Robert, I am aware that you know about the other ADT thread. I just want others to be aware of it, as well.

I think AVG 9 should see a shrink about it scanning compulsion. It's like someone that has to wash their hands all the time.
Anyway, I performed a lobotomy and moved avgchsvx .exe from the AVG9 sub-directory to a Save sub-directory (in case AVG issues a 'fix' and I'll need that file back in the AVG9 sub-directory).
After moving it, I went down the Task List and found two copies that were currently running and Ended those processes. If you don't move that file before you do that, it will just start up again and you'll never get it stopped.
Happiness is getting your PC back and putting an end to the constant scanning.

I just ordered two more Macbooks for the house. With these two, destined for the kids, I am de-commissioning my remaining Windows laptops in the house. This should just about eliminate my need to ever worry about AV software again.
I will still use Windows, but only for business apps at the office and I've got an IT guy there that makes AV issues HIS problem.

Hi,
although i have only Version 8 installed on one pc (never had an older one) i often wonder why people think they always need to upgrade to higher versions. One of the first things i do (with any software) is to find it´s "phone home" and "autoupdate" features. I simply don´t wanna be "incapacitated" (i hope its spelled right) by the producer of the software.
After a period of further "inspection" i usually turn on autoupdate to "inform" me about an update
But i often wonder also if a new verion is tested at all if it turns out the way like AVG V9

It seems that AVG has adopted the Microsoft business model - throw together a piece of software and let your customers test it for free.

^ AVG has been one of those companies that "forces" you to upgrade/update by virtue of dropping all update support for your existing product.
Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware products quickly become useless without current definitions, so you eventually acquiesce and install the newer version.
AVG has lost me as a paying customer -- for good!
Assholes!

Yeah, there's really no reason virus definition files shouldn't be compatible across different versions.

Not wishing to defend AVG, there is some logic to what they have done, particularly for a first time user who has never scanned their hard drives.
It's the implementation that is wrong.
They've adopted the part of Microsoft's business model that assumes they know best and not even provide an opt out method.
All they needed to do was not add the automatic (first time on install) hard drive scan and allow the user to use the select drive scan, which is part of that package, when desired. There is an End Scan button when using this option.
Also write the routine so it could be interrupted before completion and resumed at a later time, rather than the simplistic "you have to start over" approach.
My autoscan was taking hours and it was working on a 150 Gb hard drive. Next was a 300 Gb drive. I can't imagine what it would take for a 1 Tb drive!
What were they thinking.
This would have given the user control, something that Windows tries to avoid.
I was able to take back control by eliminating that scanner routine (avgchsvx .exe).
Now we'll have to wait and see if AVG steps up and corrects the problem. I'm betting they won't. They have known about it since Sept.

^ This is just one of many AVG 9 issues.
Don't forget my paid version's Anti-Rootkit crashing my computer with the BSOD.
Also, I continued using AVG 9 for a good month, updating and running normal scans (i.e. left Anti-Rootkit alone), disabled link-scanner, and it just got worse and worse.
And, did you read the "customer service" e-mail I posted in the other thread?
AVG has "jumped the shark."
Good riddance.

Anyone reading the links above will know I have had more than my share of problems with the new AVG but I have not had any problems with it repeatedly scanning everything. I have it set to one scan a day and it is sticking to that.

I didn't remember that.
I've only had one problem requiring a RootKit (1.3 Meg) and I got a free one from sophos.com that did the job.
I saw it, but declined to read it.
They sure seem to be trying.
I know I'm in the minority (5%) of those who still have dial-up but I really don't need a high speed connection nor very much protection. I average less than 1 hour a day connected and I turn my systems off at night.
I don't need nor do I use most of the 'features' in Windows XP, Firefox, AVG, PC Tools Firewall, Flash, Quicktime, Adobe (use Foxit), etc. All the programs that assume you are high speed connected and want the latest versions and all the 'bells and whistles' they keep adding to their software.
So I don't experience a lot of problems and only up-grade when I am forced to.
