latest RealPlayer can also play dvds but I prefer PowerDVD which I got free with my DVD-ROM and DVD-RW.

Have they included DVD menu navigation in the latest releases?
The last version I installed didn't.

I use Xine whenever I want to check a DVD out on my Penguin box. I don't think that's available for Windows though.

codec packs are generally a bad idea, you should be fine with the latest directx and wmv9, xvid or ffdshow. media player classic's ac3 decoder is solid and if you end up needing a filter or something later-install it by itself. unless you've got major deficiencies the codec packs have a "dumb" installation that might leave you with conflicts and you're definetly going to end up with sub-optimal meriting of decoders.

I like the Ace mega because It lets you decide which codecs you need so your computer isn't fulla bullshit.

I also like it because you can play all those wird downloaded files. Like files made with German camcorders and shit like that. No problem!!
