So ... my DVD/CD player inside my 2007 MacBookPro 15, rejects any disc that I insert. This only happened AFTER the whole laptop crashed/died ("white screen of death"), and I rebooted from the system disc and everything else was fine again. I tried "zapping the PRAM." Have no other ideas what to do. Do I have to replace it? It seems like something that should be more easily fixable.

my macbook wouldn't accept disks for the longest time so i took it to the apple store and they fixed it since it was under Apple Care. They had to send it off though, i believe. It could just be a bad drive....Try posting on the Apple.com support forums or MacRumors.com. Lots of real geniuses on there. Hope this helps.

I read 'em. I'm not under warranty. I may just keep asking. It's not essential but it is useful to have.

So you are saying that it works when you boot off the installation dvd but the cd/dvd drive doesn't work when the machine is booted of the hard disk?
If it will boot off the install media run Disk Utility and check the disk for errors and repair permissions.

When your machine crashed it may have corrupted the filesystem and something that is required to make the cd/dvd drive work. You may need to reinstall the OS if that doesn't fix it.
