Darth, hate to disappiont as you have been a great supporter of my POV work, but I still haven't switched to wide screen.The wide screen hi def cameras available are just built wrong for pov in my opinion.I feel that camera work is extremely important in pov and there's less room for error.Sony has just put out a new camera that looks like it will be much better for pov.I will shoot wide screen as soon as I can do it without compromising my shot. I shot Lela Star yesterday all I can say is shes amazing.Dont worry Dr P plenty of doggy anal will be captured,just gotta book he scenes.After all these years I still cant believe this is actually a "job"
Why would you want wide screen for POV? You’re mostly shooting the girl on top of you looking up and down or doggie, mission, which again is up and down. You might get more body for your shot with tilted shoots with wide screen, as you would title your head from side to side in a Dutch. But I would think most of your screen would be wasted unless you can’t live with seeing that lamp on the table off to the side. To bad they don’t have High Screen I would think this would fit porn better as people are more vertical then horizontal even in porn. Gangbangs would be good in wide screen.
I agree with John that wide screen cameras are too fat to be held in one hand and if you dropped that thing! OUCH! By by birdie.

I guess if you are holding out Sasha’s toes far out to the left or right I can see this. Other wise their behind you or if you hold her feet in front of you but this would not need wide. I don’t know My screen is at 65 now not in wide screen. I guess I could go bigger too, I gone need a lager room :) Wide screen is cool but just don’t see it for this but will see.
Yeah the Newer HDs with their 745i to 1080i should be cool. Can’t wait tell they settle the format war’s! So I can buy a new DVD player already. But then they’ll come out with 2160i and up and up. Its gone be like printers. I ll never catch up :(

I don’t know if this makes any sense but I will give it a shot. If your using the same wide angle on a camera that shots Wide screen and the other camera that shots Full screen. You then frame it to cover the same points from side to side. Does the Wide screen just crop off the top and bottom so you lose image. Or compress the top and bottom down to squeeze it to fit? Or is the chip bigger in the Wide screen camera or just arranged in a different proportion? Yani Z

Thanks for the reply MJ. I hope you don't give up on 16:9 alltogether. I can understand that it might get some getting used to. Still, if you cut off the ends of the scope you looking into to make it look like 4:3, wouldn't that be like shooting it the old way? You would have the same image in the center of the screen, but now you would have the sides as well.
I will have to check Everhard's work on the new edition of his POV line. EE seems like a good guy but to be honest I have been less than impressed with his work. I rather see you in the scene than EE. Sometimes his penetration doesn't look as good or go as deep. Now that he is shooting for JJ, I hope you guys have started thinking about releasing your stuff in real HD. Blu-Ray looks more and more like a looser. HD-DVD is cheaper to buy and cheaper to produce. So far the video quality has been better as well. I don't think it would be that big of a gamble to release titles in HD-DVD.
I don't shoot POV (due to my marital status and sadly inadequate genitalia) but it should really make no difference whether it's 16:9 or 4:3. Put the girl in the center of the frame and if there's too much irrelevant crap on either side, zoom in 25%.
Darth the problem is not the wide frame itself,but the acctual body style of the camera.The flip screen on the current sony is in a bad spot,and the camera mic picks up lots of creeking sounds ect.This is not a prob when shooting a regular scene but for POV its just one more thing to think about. As Quasar suggests Zooming while shooting a pov won't work.You would be tightening your frame verticaly as well as horizontal.When shooting pov like anything you need wide, medium,and tight shots.To get a wide shot takes all the arm length an average persons got zooming in would make a wide impossible.I am looking forward to the next gen of HD cameras, I will always use what ever cameras I feel will allow me to deliver the best POV I can shoot.thanks for watching.....
I was hoping someone could tell me if 16x9 was a true wide screen chip. Reason I ask is when I used to work for Samy’s Camera in Hollywood and they had this big hoopla about Panoramic (Wide Screen) Cameras. A customer brought there’s back as it didn’t work. They charge an outrages fee to fix things so I tolled him I look into it. I found the leaf shutter stuck and made it work. As I was playing with it and the Panoramic I noticed that it would crop the image down on the film!?! Then you need to get it special printed to enjoy the wider image. I gone assume that they actually add more chip on the sides to get a true wide screen. Maybe that’s why there are two types of New HD cameras one that shots 1081i and the other that shots around 745i the extra 300i or difference being the add sides. I hope so.
Yeah thought about zooming in more but I don’t think most people realize that doing so you lose to see more of the girl’s body. This defeats the purpose of widescreen if you’re looking to see more. MJ your lucky I think you’re what 6 ft? every inch helps in getting those full body shots. I just have to say that I don’t mind widescreen as much as some people but I do enjoy full screen much more as I don’t feel like I have a squinting feeling as from widescreen. Full Screen gives me a roundness feeling for framing that I like as well. But times are changing and its saves the movie industry money as they now don’t have the option of both on DVDs anymore. MJ is right about some of these new cameras the cheap plastics their using now make a ton of noise. What bugs me is they don’t edit it out! Not a problem I guess if your using it on sticks, but hand holding it makes it more of a pain. When they come out with a better apple picker I ‘ll be waiting to pick up that gem. Looking forward to when they come out with full frame 24p widescreen 1080i in a hand held camera with full manual everything, I’ll be the first in line to pick it up!
I got another Q’s was looking through my projector an noticed that it has not only 4:3 and 16:9 but also Native, Letterbox text, Letter Box, 2:35:1, Natural Wide and OverScan!?!? Anybody have an idea what all this is for? Are there more formats that I don’t know of out there? Yani Z
Those cameras were a rip off and really only stretched the image. They weren't true panoramic cameras. As far as I know, 16x9 video cameras have a 16x9 shaped sensor, and record in "true" 16x9.I'm not super informed on HD cameras, but what I think you are refering to are two native HD resolutions: 1080i and 720P. The number tells you the number of VERTICAL lines in the picture. The letter tells you if the image is Interlaced or Progressive. Progressive means, all lines displayed in every frame. Interlaced means that half the lines in a frame are displayed, and then the other half are displayed. Your eyes join these so called "fields" into a single frame that your brain sees. "Regular TV" (NTSC) is a 480i format; you've been watching interlaced signals all your life.I don't know what projector you use but the settings are probably VERY similar with most widescreen TVs. These settings are used to try to deal with 4x3 material displayed on a 16x9 set. It breaks down into roughly three areas:
1. How to display a regular 4x3 image on that 16x9 widescreen display. There are four options: 1.1 Display it as a box in the middle of the screen, with bars on the side. 1.2 Stretch it linearly until it touches the edges of the frame. This makes people look short and fat, and makes circles into ovals. 1.3 Stretch the image non-linearly, so it's basically correct in the center, but gets more and more stretched as you reach the edges. A lot of consumers like this mode, as they get to use "the whole TV" and there's little distortion in the center. It drives me nuts. 1.4 Zoom in on the image until the sides of the 4x3 image touch the sides of the 16x9 frame. This effectively cuts off a little of the top and a little of the bottom of the image.
2. How to display letterboxed material. That is, video put onto a 4x3 medium with black bars on the tops and bottoms, to make an effective "widescreen" image, designed to be displayed on a 4x3 set. All of the options here, basically zoom in on the image, hoping to cut off the black bars, and preserve as much of the picture as possible. Your mode called "letterbox" is probably set up to zoom in on a 1.78:1 letterboxed image, and cut off the black bars. Your mode called 2.35:1 is designed to zoom in on a cinemascope image (which has an aspect ratio of 2.35 to 1). It will cut off the black bars, but it will ALSO cut off some of the sides of the image. You effectively crop your 2.35:1 image down to a 1.78:1 image. 1.78 to 1 is the same as 16x9, which is what all widescreen displays are physically.
Please note that this zooming is done with digital circuitry, and generally makes images look grainy and not so good. Trying to display letterboxed 4x3 images on a 16x9 set just flat out sucks. Also note, all of the above refers to NON-ANAMORPHIC images. I'll cover anamorphic below.
3. Displaying anamorphic images that are encoded onto a 4x3 medium. The VAST majority of widescreen DVDs are anamorphic. If you're not familiar with the term, anamorphic (in this context at least) means taking a widescreen image, and compressing it horizontally into a 4x3 frame. DVD's native recording format, or image shape, is 4x3. It was also designed for anamorphic images, so this seems weird, but they designed it this way on purpose.
On playback, the widescreen anamorphic image on the DVD is "stretched" horizontally by a widescreen display, yielding a perfect 16x9 image. It just reverses the original process that put in into a 4x3 frame to start with.
Notice that this only yields an image without bars if the source widescreen image was exactly 16x9 (1.78 to 1). If the source image is wider than that, like cinemascope (2.35:1) then small black bars must be added, even though the image is anamorphic. After all, your TV can't change shape to be 2.35 to 1 can it? The only solution is to use black bars.
Ok, so all of your modes are designed to do one of the things I just outlined. I'll guess that the modes are:
4x3 is the same as 1.1 above. 16x9 is the same as 1.2 above and is also used for anamorphic DVDs. Natural wide is the same as 1.3 above. Overscan is the same as 1.4 above. Letter box, letterbox text, and 2.35:1 are used for situation #2 above, depending upon the thickness of the black bars. Native or 16x9 is probably for anamorphic images (#3 above).
You'll have to test this out with appropriate DVDs or signals to be sure. I hope this helped.

Wow DrPOrnO didn’t really expect anyone to answer that,nice job! Just wanted to lay out that there’s more marketing hype then actual quality. I see stuff advertised that shot in HD wide screen and just wondering if this is not all hype. I keep asking my editor can he put out a HD DVD for consumers yet and there’s no not yet. I can down rez or put it out to play on a computer but that’s it for now. Once the format wars are settled well see were it goes. I have heard for people that if its shot on HD and down rez that the image looks better. But you are still getting it on the same resolution. Ya those crop image cameras were a true rip off! I even got fired for telling people don’t buy it for that feature better to use the full frame and crop were you wanted they ‘ll still blow it up the way you want. Some people still won’t believe me though, funny, they had to have to newest and latest thing. On that note! I found a new camera that might fit what I am looking for and MJ you might like it as well if you want to do PoV WideScreen HD. This might be just the Jedi mind trick to but a smile on Darth-Morpheous face. I like that it has 3 CMOS chips same stuff they use in space. Also MJ it might be a shade bit smaller then PD-150/VX2100 or that type of camera body style. I don’t know exactly what you are using. It’s not out just yet. Drop me an e-mail and I ll fill you in.
