Thought I had seen most of Colt's films (except for his mid 80s films) but I've never heard of this one. According to Dries' reliably excellent review Colt being the director was recently confirmed via the Rialto Report. Sounds like it has an interesting story and has the Colt signature mix of trippiness and violence. Plus he sings the theme song. Must see this asap. I assume the VCX release is as substandard as usual? Any chance of a VS release? PS. I see the imdb entry on Colt also now lists him as the director of the infamous roughie The Intruder. May be a good option for you too Flash for The Intruder. In terms of rights sometimes that can be murky particularly with the director and producers working under false names, Rueben Sturman long gone and some of the sleazier films being funded by mafia types. To be fair a lot of these films wouldn't have become as well known as they are with cult fans if ABA hadn't been there in the early 90s selling it on the grey market. By then that was the only way many of the films were available unless you were going to track down an original beta or VHS. I remember first reading about Waterpower, Sex Wish and The Devil Inside Her in a ABA ad in the back of a cult movie zine in the early 90s. The hyped up copy made them sound so horrific and gross it kinda turned my stomach, little did I know haha. It was The Devil Inside Her description that intrigued me though and that was the first really sleazy xxx feature I sought out. These days though with so much more being known about the films and their directors there's little excuse to be putting these films out without some kind of proper arrangement. We've certainly come a long way, its funny to re-read Jonathan Ross' important Incredibly Strange Film Book from 1993 where he writes about The Enema Bandit (aka Waterpower) and to remember how little was known back then. The film was almost completely shrouded in mystery and misinformation. BTW Ross certainly was brave or foolhardy to write about an enema rape porno while working as a public media figure! The film itself is pretty good, got that 70s morose melodrama feel you only get from that era (everyone imitating The Devil in Miss Jones I think). There's some desultory softcore rape and gang rape thrown in but it never reaches the levels of distrubing that Colt's other work does as it is all clearly signposted as a hallucination. Things really kick in about a half hour in when Lisa Marks' character starts to hallucinate about having sex with her boyfriend Hershel Savage (very young here) on two horizontal ladders. Very memorable. From there it explodes into a series of increasingly strange group sex scenes with what looks like a tribute to Kenneth Anger's queer classic Fireworks. The plot, what little there was, disappears and it feels like an underground film from the 60s for about 20-30 minutes. For once, probably due to Colt's queerness, the female characters erotic fantasies do actually feel like a woman's fantasy as there are loads of eroticized male bodies and penises. Lisa Marks gives a pretty good performance, with some amusing camp and overacting thrown in. She is quite attractive and curvy when naked too. One issue is that there's never much motivation for the main character's breakdown besides the refrain from Savage that she 'is working too much.' Definitely odd and unique enough to be worth watching even if I didn't know it was directed by Colt. PS. Theme song sung by Colt is awesome. [Link] |
