I'm assuming they didn't shoot on 35mm, and while I'm sure some of it was shot on 8mm, I have to wonder if there's still plenty of 16mm scenes to remaster. [Link] |

Flash  Golden Age Classic 11017 Posts 5/01 | Posted - Aug 9 2018 : 7:26PM Vinegar Syndrome and Distribpix/Command (along with some of their final Video-X-Pix releases) have been using 16mm and 35mm negatives for some of their releases and releasing some films on DVD and some on Blu-ray. The rest are mastered off of prints (16mm, 35mm, and 35mm blow ups). Impulse Pictures and After Hours Cinema are seemingly mastered off of prints (16mm, 35mm, and 35mm blow ups); however, After Hours Cinema often mucks with their releases. It is likely that some of the adult loops collections have been mastered off of 8mm prints although some have clearly been mastered from the 16mm negatives. Some other companies have assorted releases mastered from prints or negatives but the bulk of their releases are mastered from video tape (Like VCX, Alpha Blue Archives, etc). [Link] |

My knowledge of porn film (literally film) comes from Steely Dan...Everyone's Gone to the Movies. The protagonist (child molester) says, "I know you're used to 16 or more, sorry we only have 8". Their DVD came from what looked like a crappy VHS in standard frame with a horrible visual image. Sound seemed okay. Flash forward a few years after our on-line reviews complained about this presentation. The fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome get ahold of some sort of 35mm print of the film. I assume the reels of the film are cleaned framed-by-frame then transferred into the computer where digital technology takes over. Colors can be enhanced, etc. So, the film comes out to rave reviews from me and others. There's now a beautiful wide screen presentation of Bella thanks to VS. I assume the same process would have been used to restore Pretty Peaches mentioned above. tb--- [Link] |

In mainstream Hollywood, storage of original media can be quite good-archival-but inconsistent in different time periods and inconsistent for different types of movies or TV programs. A lot of stuff is not archived properly, but a lot of other stuff is. I'm going to guess that older porn reels were never archived properly, and I'll bet that in many cars the original reels are simply missing. Like no one knows where they are. But that is just my assumption. Is that actually the case? [Link] |

Those one-and-done films that are out there have a better chance of survival and interest if someone like Robert McCallum/Gary Graver shot the film. Same with some of Jack Remy's work on film. Then, the trick is to find the original in whatever shape and give the Vinegar Syndrome folks a restoration go at it---tb [Link] |

With some of Vinegar Syndrome's releases I assume that is what they strive for and must get sometimes as many of their blu-ray and even many of the DVD releases look immaculate, although I'm sure they're also doing some digital restoration as they scan the print.
