The new worm, called OSX.Inqtana.A, spreads through a vulnerability in Apple's OS X operating system via Bluetooth wireless connections, antivirus company Symantec said. "We have speculated that attackers would turn their attention to other platforms, and two back-to-back examples of malicious code targeting Macintosh OS X ... illustrate this emerging trend," said Vincent Weafer, senior director at Symantec Security Response. The latest virus follows OSX/Leap-A, which was identified last week and believed to be the first such virus targeting the Mac platform. That worm attempts to spread via Apple's iChat instant messaging program, which is compatible with America Online's popular AIM instant messaging program. Symantec said the latest worm attempts to use Bluetooth connections to spread by searching for other Bluetooth-using devices that will accept requests for a connection when the computer is restarted. Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to transmit data among devices at short distances. The worm spreads via a vulnerability in the OS X operating system called the Apple Mac OS X BlueTooth Directory Traversal Vulnerability. If a Bluetooth connection is made, the worm attempts to send itself to those remote computers. However, the worm itself does not appear to pose an immediate threat. "While this particular worm is not fully functional, the source code could be easily modified by a future attacker to do damage," Weafer said, adding that Mac users should install available software patches to their operating systems to prevent such attacks. The latest worm was identified on Friday. Both worms are ranked a Level 1 threat on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most severe, Symantec said. Click to expand Just for those smug Apple people. Michael Saint Photographer Alexis Texas is always lovely 1062 Posts 2/01	Posted - Feb 25 2006 : 4:25PM Well my keyboard for my lap top is blue tooth but I would probably be more worried about my cell phone whose head set is blue tooth and is internet capable. Would NOT be good for someone to hack my phone and e-mail all my personal phone numbers out. [Link]

Though I guess that fact alone makes it almost priceless. Actually I was not worried about me per se. Let's face it most e-mail viruses are not from people trying to steal things just people trying to make a mess of things. Most people live by their cell phones these days especially in business could you imagine someone getting remote access to your phone and using it to send unlimited text messages and e-mails. Unlike phone calls which show up pretty readily on your recent activity screen on your phone I am not sure that the texts and e-mails would and if you are like me and just never use those features then you would be jacked because you probably wouldn't find out about it until you got your bill and if the virus can "send" itself to other phones in your address book then that would definitely be the making of a huge mess. And something some hacker would probably find amusing. [Link]

jamesnadt Deactivated User cambridge, ma 152 Posts 2/06	Posted - Feb 27 2006 : 11:48PM there have been between 100k and 200k similar threats to windows over the last decade. yeah, osx has vulnerabilities and more and more people are coming up with worms that work as a "proof of concept" but there still remain a negligable amount of "in the wild/active/destructive" threats.
