In my opinion, the adult industry and people in general need to decide if they believe 18 year old females are children or adults. It simply cannot be both ways. Let me illustrate why I am pondering this topic as it pertains to the adult entertainment industry.

Girl X, let's call her Shawna. Shawna is 18 years old and she decides she wants to perform in adult movies. She could use the money, enjoys sex and decides she would enjoy the notoriety that comes with being an adult actress. Knowing full well who Max Hardcore is and having seen his movies, Shawna elects to contact Max Hardcore at a convention and see if she can arrange being in one of his movies. Max likes Shawna's look and agrees to shoot her upon his return to Los Angeles.

A week later, Shawna calls Max Hardcore to firm up the date and get directions to Max's house (where the shooting takes place). After getting the directions, date and time of said shoot, Shawna hangs up. Two days later, she makes the drive from the San Fernando Valley to Altadena, approximately 30 miles, and arrives right on time for the shoot (11 am). Shawna goes right into wardrobe and make-up.

By noon or so, Max calls Shawna into his office to fill out a LENGTHY release and make sure she understands every single sex act she will perform and the money she is going to be paid. She checks off, accepts and initials, anal sex, vaginal sex, blow job, ass to mouth, cum swallowing, urine in her mouth (to include swallowing) and various other sex acts. The movie is now ready to be shot.

The movie starts with a simple meet and greet then moves very quickly to very hard-core anal sex. Over the next hour, Shawna endures this scene and does all that is asked of her. She never asks for a break and certainly never says, "NO" or "PLEASE STOP" to anything, at any time. The scene ends.

Shawna goes to take a shower and clean up. Thirty minutes later she is accepting her pay check for X amount of dollars, the price she agreed to do the scene for. She tells Max it was a great scene and she would like to do it again. Shawna leaves, cashes her pay check and its all over.

A week later, Shawna posts all over the Internet that Max Hardcore was brutal towards her and she was underpaid. Keeping in mind that she agreed to the rate before the shoot and further, she agreed to every single sex act she was asked to perform. At no time did she ever ask to stop the shoot or express any dissatisfaction whatsoever. She took the pay check and spent it.

Now, the adult industry reads about how poorly she was treated and they say, "Poor little girl. No girl should be treated like that. That Max guy is such an asshole."

At this point, the sympathy comes pouring out for poor little Shawna. "Poor little thing was brutalized by the big, bad Max Hardcore". This very reaction now says the adult industry thinks Shawna is a child and needs it's sympathy and protection. On one hand, they scream and clatter that 18 is a legal adult, capable of making the decision to be in adult movies (as long as it's their movies). On the other hand, they strip her of all rights and responsibilities of making adult decisions by laying the blame for the entire scenario with Max Hardcore at Max's feet. They conveniently forgot it was Shawna that found Max. It was Shawna who pursued being in this Max Hardcore scene. They seem happy to forget that Shawna signed the release acknowledging that she was aware of EVERY expectation of her and that she agreed to the rate PRIOR to shooting the movie. Shawna never spoke up during the movie and happily accepted her pay check which she spent on pot and some new clothes.

My question is this: If we are saying an 18 year old female is old enough star in adult movies, I am certainly saying she is old enough to reap both the positive and negative outcomes of being in the adult biz. Am I right or wrong here? If she is an adult capable of being in adult movies and entering into legally binding contracts of her own free will, how can she be absolved of any and all negative results? She could have called off ever appearing in the movie or walked away from the scene half way through. Why didn't she? She wanted and needed the money is likely the answer. At this juncture, how is she absolved of responsibility for this scene and Max becomes the bad guy?

Now, this letter is not really a letter attacking or admonishing Shawna nor saying Max Hardcore is a great guy. The players and names are irrelevant. It is the concept I am really trying to focus on. The adult entertainment industry goes nuts and readily defends their position when religious groups or the government suggest that 18 year olds are too young to do porn. The adult industry aggressively makes the case that said 18 year olds are old enough to enlist, vote and enter into legal agreements such as buying cars and using credit cards, ect. They (both the actress and the BIZ) claim that performing in adult movies is their constitutional right as adults in this country (I happen to agree). Then, in the same conversation, the adult entertainment industry, after making such a convincing case that 18 year olds are adults, goes just the opposite direction when the topic of exploitation comes up. Some poor girl who, as the adult they were just talking about, gets herself into something she was not ready for or was not fond of doing. At which point, the BIZ will coddle her and say its all the bad man's, company's or the most recent alien visitor from Mars' fault. Anything, but her own dam fault for not doing her homework, biting off more than she can chew or lacking enough spine to stop something she was not comfortable doing. If she is an adult, treat her like an adult. If she is old enough to do porn, she is old enough to handle, deal with, reap, partake in any and all repercussions of said decision. If, at 18, she is not old enough, in the eyes of the adult industry, to deal with such repercussions, by all means, move the age up to 25, 30 or any other randomly chosen age you will help you accept her decisions as HER decisions and stop coddling her.

When 18 year old enlist in the military, then get orders for a combat zone, then go AWOL because they are scared of being killed, no one shows such mercy. We all say, you joined the dam Army, you took their money, allowed them to put you through college and now, it is time you paid that debt. Pick up your rifle and go fight and quit being a whiny pussy. No one made you join, it was your decision. I simply ask that the same extension of recognizable adulthood be extended towards the adult entertainment industry as well.

Sexually yours,

BisexualBritni

PS. This letter does not reflect any factual scenario. "Shawna" is not a real person and I simply used Max Hardcore because he is my friend and is often on the receiving end of complaints such as these. My dealings with Max Hardcore have never been anything but absolutely professional. He has paid me every dime I have ever been owed and been the perfect gentlemen towards me at all times.

First of all i would say that 18 is the right age to become an adult person. Nowadays I think more and more young people have sex before that age. Maybe some girls think that they can earn big money with having sex (similar to their private life standard sex) but every girl should be clever enough to check some movies before thinking about joining the industry.

Out of the fact that "Shawna" contacted Max by herself and agreed to everything... she should be the one blamed, not Max. And even more important: Every girl should be able to say NO about something she does not want to do!

It seems to me that many porn consumers are deep inside feeling guilty in some way about their porn viewing habits. Than it only needs one girl blaiming a <bad old guy> and they jump at him and patronize her.

All of us would say that an 18 year old is old enough to buy a car or to choose work as a car mechanic, but once she chooses out of her own free will to do porn, some father-instinct grows with porn consumers.

I never understood why for so many it is so difficult to accept that girls choose to do certain acts on camera for money.
Frigo says it right: 18 y.o. is an absolutely safe age to enter porn, since most girls do a lot of those acts many years before already.

Me, I fully accept the choice of any legal adult to join the porn circuit. But than I never felt guilty about consuming porn or paying for live-sex, hooker etc.

This is the part that rings true to me. If someone is old enough to die for their country, then they are old enough to do whatever the hell they want to do. End of story... wait... its not. When you gain the right to do something, you also gain the obligation and the accountability for whatever deed to undertake. If you kill a man, you can expect to go to jail for it (Or even die for it in some places). When you take up smoking and drinking, you acknowledge and deal with the fact that this may cause you serious health problems. And when you agree to get paid in return for performing hardcore, and possible physically draining sexual acts on camera, there is no excuse for not living up to the obligations and accountability you signed on for.

I am personally against age limits on anything, because to me it does not matter the age of the person concerned, but whether they have the maturity to deal with given situations. I am sure there are plenty of eighteen year olds out there who are way too immature to be doing a lot of the things they do (Hell, my flatmate is 22 and hes not mature enough to walk out the front door in the morning). But in saying that there are much younger people out there who are more than mature enough to be dealing with the decisions and options available to people over the age of 18.

Essentially, it is a flawed system we have all across the world, because it is not viable to psycologically evaluate everyone, in order to deem them mature enough to do a lot of the things we have set an age limit to. So the question should be asked on whether we should have any kind of limitations at all, whether the status quo is acceptable, or whether we try to find a way that efficiently evaluates the people of our community for the priviledges that come with maturity and accountability.

Ponder this... if a 14 year old is considered by a court of law to be accountable to his or her actions should they kill a man/woman and is sentanced to death for it. Is it not then hypocritical to say that said individual does not have the maturity/accountability to deal with performing in a Hardcore sex scene? (extreme example and I am not advocating 14yo in porn).

My own countries laws are quite archaic in some regards with age of consent issues. You can achieve a full drivers license at the age of 16, be sent to war at 16, enter into consensual sex at 16, drink and smoke at 18, gain the right to enter into SOME legal contracts at 18, vote at 18, gain full right to enter into legal contracts at 20.

I believe age of consent issues is something that legislators all across the globe need to look into, it is also something that needs to be addressed on a global level. I find it absurd that I can stay here and have sex with a 16yo, go overseas to some countries and shag a 14yo, and then head to yet other countries and be told I have to wait till a girl is 21. Thats just an example that seemed relevant, but it affects a wide range of issues, not just sexual.

In summary... I believe that although your example of the 18 year old is valid under the current legislation, the the current legislation is flawed, and that is the real issue. The current legislation does not address the issue of whether an individual has the maturity to accept the consequences of their actions.

Although what you say rings true and is of import. I think the issue for Britni and this thread is that, given what the law is today (18 being the legal age of adulthood) should 18 year olds who cry foul after agreeing to do hardcore porn be given preferential treatment? In my view the answer is categorically no. When you, as an adult, agree to do something (so long as it's legal) you should be responsible for whatever consequences come along with that. In this hypothetical example Max would be well within his rights to sue for defamation of character.

I've said before that I think the minimum age for doing porn (or any other sex industry job) should be 21.

I would support a federal law enforcing this.

I always prefer fresh faced girls, but you can find fresh faced 21 year olds. It just might be a tad more difficult )

I agree in part with the above quote from Ishamael1.
I do agree that that maturity of the individual is an important factor. For example a mature 16 yrs old actress may be more capable of pursuing a career in the porn industry compared to a sensitive 19 year old.
I feel age limits are necessary, however, inorder to control the sitution from a legal and moral perspective. Also to protect those vulnerable under the legal age.

(I'm using your names here for the sake of simplicity.)

The problem here is confusing sympathy with responsibility. If Shawna is 18 years or older and understands exactly what she is getting into, and what she is getting paid, then she is totally responsible for her actions. However, if she feels the need to complain about it afterwards, someone is bound to sympathize. Sure, if she made a decision on her own then she is the only one to blame. But is there any need to play the blame game here? Sympathy is a natural human emotion. She has every right to say what she wants, so long as she accurately states the facts. People in all sorts of everyday jobs complain about their pay or work conditions. Does the fact that they didn't have to take the job, or that they could quit if they wanted take away the right to complain about it? Does agreeing to do something for money mean you are also required to like it and never speak badly of it afterwards?

Take your example of someone enlisting in the military. He understands the risks and the pay when he enlists. He might go off somewhere and fight, and then come back and tell a horrific tale. Just because we sympathize with the situation doesn't mean we don't think he is a responsible adult.

Okay, so once Shawna has complained, you are talking about something completely out of her hands: Public opinion. People have many different opinions about sexuality. Let's use an example from your message: "Poor little girl. No girl should be treated like that. That Max guy is such an asshole." That is a perfectly reasonable opinion to form. The fact that it was all consensual doesn't change a person's opinion of what is going too far. I don't think it's so much an issue of age, but of conduct. Some people just do not want to see (or hear of) a woman (of ANY age) being treated in certain ways. In this case, Max becomes the bad guy not because he is taking advantage of anyone, but because he is promoting behavior that many people find objectionable. Shawna and Max are equally responsible here, but people decide to take Shawna's side because she has seemingly changed her opinion, while Max continues to make the same kind of films. They are not objecting to this one particular instance, but to a pervasive attitude throughout Max's body of work.

Gherky,
I don't think this is just about Max but another facet of the 'poor little female'/'big bad predatory male' syndrome.

I think this is exactly the same situation as in the Tournante thread yesterday.
To quote myself:

I feel these remarkably insightful comments are equally valid here. Society needs to decide (and here in the UK the situation is just the same as it is in the US) exactly where it wants to draw the line on the issue of equality because at the moment women seem to be able to demand equality when it suits but still be regarded as vunerable little flowers when it does not. In the UK certainly, this applies not only to social outlook but also to the law itself.

Ok,

Personally I prefer my women to be 25 and older with tits, hips, legs and an ass. I really don't get off on the entire innocent scenario. It has been my experience (Note I'm saying my experience) that most 18 year olds aren't really all that good in bed.

It is with great ease that I recall being 18. I had graduated the prior year from university and as such I was smart, could follow orders and make decisions. I did a job that men twice my age and experience would have found difficult. But I lacked maturity and to be honest I barely knew my ass from a hole in the ground.

During this period of my life my cock never went down but I certainly wasn't sexually or emotionally mature enough to decide to embark on a career in porn. Shit I fell in love or lust with a new girl every 10 mins.

In my opinion 18 year olds really shouldn't be in porn and its not because they aren't adults. Its because they need to have some life experience and develop who they are first and foremost before we welcome them into the porno gang.

that pretty much sums up how I feel. I realize that every person is different and some girls are more mature at 18 than others but when they are that young consequences is not usually something that is taken into consideration.

This question really begs the bigger issue of how we, as a society, should make moral decisions. Not to be too philosophical, but...

There are really two basic methods that we can use in our treatment of sticky issues such as this one. We can:

1) Assess each individual case on its own merits and reach a customized conclusion. The merit of this approach is that it is the most likely to appropriately ascertain the situation and prescribe the correct action to deal with it. The problems are that a) it is costly and requires time/resources, and b) it leads to non-uniform responses similar situations (the definition of customized).

2) Create a one-size law that attempts to uniformly establish criterion by which to measure any situation that arises, and to respond by wrote. The merit of this approach is a speedy and uniform response. The disadvantage is that it takes absolutely no intrinsic or exogenous circumstances into account before prescribing action.

I personally detest answer 2, but it is generally the preferred method of government (and even of many constituents).

Seeing as that answer 2 has been adopted by the powers that be, it should be adhered to rigorously, even when the frailties of the affected party become painfully obvious. Otherwise, of what use is this piece of legislation? It becomes a one-sided negotiation tool for attorneys.

Sir Noel Plum,
I wasn't trying to express a personal opinion about Max or say this is something specific to his stuff... Mainly, I was trying to explain how someone might form those opinions. I used Max in my example in order to comment upon the example BisexualBritni had used.

I agree with what you have to say about dual standards... When it comes to male performers, nobody seems to care about any of this stuff... Indeed the title of the thread specifies "18 year old females" rather than just 18 year olds in general. I consider someone 18 years old to be an adult, for what it's worth...

As it relates to the 'poor little female'/'big bad predatory male' syndrome, as you put it, are we talking about all porn, or just the rough stuff? Some videos intentionally play off of this syndrome by setting up scenarios where the female performer is made to look like a victim. Even when these scenes are obviously scripted, it sends a message that many people are turned off by. Regardless of the tastes of the viewers, I think it's all fine as long as the people involved know what they are getting into ahead of time. If the performers are happy with what they are doing, why should we concern ourselves with it? If we don't like it, we can watch something else.

In BisexualBritni's example, we are talking about someone who decides after the fact that they don't like what happened. Really, it's her own damn fault in that situation. She doesn't have to work with that performer/studio again. She can get out of porn all-together if she wants... but she can't change the past. As long as she is truthful, she has every right to speak out against it, and we have every right to call her a cry baby. Of course, younger people are more likely to make decisions that they might regret, and I can sympathize, but she still needs to take responsibility for her own actions.

I don't think I could put it any better than Hamilton did, but since I always seem to write ten words rather than one, I'll just keep going.

Eighteen may be old enough to understand the consequences, but it isn't alwyas enough to have the maturity to deal with it (such as in Britni's example). The more I look at things, the less of a problem I have with 21 being a minimum age. By 21 most people have matured MUCH more, which seems to be the same reason you can't buy a handgun or drink until you're 21.

i have to agree with hamilton on this...

im only 22 and i've changed a lot since i was 18 - i think it should be raised to 21 only because once you do porn you're pretty muhc blacklisted for life according to society...

of course there are 18 year olds who are mature but the majority aren't - and i think if you're going to be a performer in this industry it is something you have to think long and hard about and weigh the pros and cons and accept the consequences that come with it...

will taylor rain still look like a barely legal school girl by the time shes 21 ?

unless she gains 100 lbs, smokes 10 packs a day and develops a drinking and drug problem - im betting she'll look exactly the same!

I think its simple. There is no exact age where you could say that EVERYONE is an adult. People mature and grow at different rates and ages. Some at 14 are more mature than those at 24. I'd say that 18 is a pretty good estimate. You could never raise the legal age to 21, because people are expected to graduate high school and get a job. Since most graduate at 18, then it's fair to say that they can make a living, even if it's in the adult industry.

The scenario is one that could be played out in any corporate office in this Country by a male or female. While there are some eighteen year olds that look too young and inexpereienced to be on film, to each his own. You can vote at 18, go to war at 18, cannot drink until 21 so there are discrepencies.

If the stars are mature enough, then they should go for it. While there are several veterans out there that have stayed in the business for years and years, this industry has a short timeframe for young ladies and in order to be successful, make money and decide what to do next, they need their best years to make their mark.

Britni,
In the scenario you describe, it doesn't matter if a girl is 18 or 21 or 35. It doesn't matter if the director is Max Hardcore. If she's naming names on the Internet in her version, those she names can't easily refute her allegations without doing the same. Especially if it is this clear-cut.

While this scenario is not always the case. The problem not just for 18-year-olds but for porn in general is virtually the opposite, but still common scenario:

Girl Y, let's call her NotShawna. NotShawna is 18 years old and figures she can make some money in adult since she doesn't mind taking her clothes off. An agent or director notes that she can make a lot more by fucking on camera. Sounds to her like what she's done before, just for a movie. She gets a name from a name from a name, and when she hears that "he's really cool" and "she'll love it," she wants to believe it. Since the name's from someone she trusts, it has to be legit.

The last thing she wants to do is look like a bitch by questioning it. But the pressure feels kind of weird, and in a way she doesn't wanna go. She assumes she just needs to chill out and goes shopping or smokes a bowl. But then again, she thinks, it is good money. It should really be OK and she should really get going. At about 2 p.m., NotShawna shows up for her 11 a.m. shoot.

The director is always about getting the model release signed the fuck already on any day, and with NotShawna being three hours late, it's clear that she's in no mood to wait while she fucks around some more.

Finally, NotShawna gets her clothes off.

The movie starts with a simple meet and greet then moves very quickly to NotShawna with Cock #1 in her mouth and Cock #2 up her pussy. Then she hears Cock #2 being told to ram it up her ass. That wasn't part of the original deal, she thought. But now, in order to say something, NotShawna has only moments to get Cock #1 out of her mouth and maneuver out of the imminently assaulting Cock #2. Assuming that she succeeds, the rhythm is broken and now, dammit, looks like Cock #2 could seriously be losing wood. Everyone does everything to get NotShawna to finish the scene, because everyone but NotShawna knows that no one's getting paid if she doesn't. Butt-naked, semen dripping down her face and leg and confronting a roomful of angry men, NotShawna caves quickly. When Cock #2 then slams into her pussy or mouth, she doesn't even think about objecting. She's miserable and just wants to get through it so she can get the fuck out of there. Finally, she's a team player.

NotShawna goes to take a shower and clean up. Thirty minutes later she is accepting the figure for which she thought she'd be just fucking on camera for. She wants it to be all better so she smiles and says nice things to the guys. After she cashes her check, she starts thinking about how she was only supposed to do X and ended up doing Y,Z and numerous derivatives for free. Feeling totally ripped off, NotShawna publicly speaks out, saying the director was brutal towards her and she was underpaid. Everyone assumes it's true, with porners seeing it as business as usual and porn opponents seizing it as yet another excuse to intrude into porn's business.

Now is an 18-year-old more vulnerable than a 21, 24, or 36 year old to the above? Certainly. Is the answer then raising the age to 21 or 24 or 36? Certainly not. The more the industry and performers deal with each other professionally, the less the need for a higher age limit, either voluntary or mandated.

They look even fresher when they are 16. I think FastForward and the <couple> said very good things. Its not an age problem. I think it is important to accept that every decision can be tought over and regretted after it. But everybody in every age needs make decisions. There is no way out from that.
Porn careers last short in our time. Therefore I think its a good thing to do before girl turns 20, because at that age she can still decide about what to do after it. She still has a few years before to think about marriage and kids.
I think by taking any decision serious and not treating decision-maker like kid, we contribute a lot to establish porn as a normal entertainment career. Fucking for money is normal work to me, but question is why 16 year old already needs to work. In Russia she does, but in high civilisation USA, I think start working at 18 looks more good.

So you're saying that it's OK for an 18 year old to go on the frontline and die for their country, fighting to protect and represent politics they can barely understand, smoke cigarettes, travel and (many don't know and don't care to know) endure 'verbal abuse' and 'abuse of power' from parents and cutthroat adults but they can't even engage in pornography as a career, let alone buy a beer?!

The more older I get, my thoughts of the world do change. But I do know that only SOME youths are smarter than what we, adults, give them credit for.

Yes!!! Fresh.. we need even Fresher... I think you might be on to something here. Lets get them when they are NEW BORNS! People could then jerk off to watching someone wipe their dick off on their diapers when they are done.

In case you can't notice, I'm being sarcastic.

With that said, if beauty is in the eye of the beholder than there is something wrong with the beholder that thinks 21 is too old.

How is this for a deal. We institute a system in porn where we have an established chain of command and instruct the 18 year olds how to follow orders, how to make command decisions and how to think. We would also have to teach them that like weapons sexual activity bears a certain responsibilty that should not be take lightly. Firearms and Sex can both have deadly consequences.

Just as a military career, a porn career can follow you for the rest of your life, in more ways than you can imagine. But unlike a military career, porn doesn't look good on a resume and is something you might want to hide from a future spouse.

PS. Porn doesn't give out medals for the wounded.

I find beauty in a lot of women 21 and older, I do like porn girls in their late twenties. But I think it is more fair to the girls to give them possibility to end porn career at around 20/21. By then they have earned the money to enjoy some years until getting kids. (And if some of them want to stay longer, o.k. - but rest can still start other career)
