Define "viable". A movement sensor and an audio or one that sends a text message/e-mail/call to a given number or address can certainly be made and it wouldn't be that large.

anything that makes a noise when someone picks it up other than the owner who will be able to cut the alarm. Similar to alarms put on cars or in homes.

Other than - that is the tough part. Maybe using short range RFID, magnetic ring, or a small sensor. The issue is identifying the person as the owner in a fast manner.
