There are two issues here: one has to do with cable versions and the other is re-editing for DVD. Vivid is probably the most prolific provider of cable-ready smut than any other studio. Most of the features you see on Playboy TV, Spice, etc. are the softcore versions of their hardcore features. Often, directors will shoot additional softcore coverage to make up for the hardcore they take out. This is undoubtedly big money for Vivid. It stucks because they also release this stuff on DVD, and if the retailer doesn't tell you, you're often stuck with a disc without the naughty bits.
The other issue, which I hear every once in a while, is that some Vivid features (such as Masseuse 3) are significantly shorter than the VHS releases, even though they contain hardcore. I can't explain the rationale behind doing that.
Finally, a mini-issue is that Vivid retitles a few of their releases for DVD, changing the name of the video from what it was on VHS. Perfect example: The Show is now Sex Show and The Show 2 is now The Asian Show. It as if it took the marketing folks a couple of years to come up with a suitable title.
I'd like to know from Vivid what the reasons are behind the DVD changes...
