Great question! I would like to know that as well. Would also like to know of any good sites where you can purchase a movie, download it, and burn your own DVD.

Lots of agreement with lots of what you said Gal, but this...
...really? We may have vastly different tastes in films, but I watch loads of great films (many unavailable in the store) on instant watch.

Great comment Gore!
I love Instant Watch! But I'm a movie expert. I can navigate Netflix like a fucking genius because my life is movies. Not everyone is like me.
Problem 1: New releases are generally not on Instant Watch. Netflix newbies get frustrated looking for all these movies they've heard of and not finding them. It's like the Instant Watch is a temptation that leaves them blue-balled. I know that Instant Watch is mostly for catalog, so I never expect New to be on it and am pleasantly surprised when we get a treat like Brothers or Lord of the Rings.
Most people want New releases. That's why Redbox only has New. Instant Watch doesn't have new, so it's disappointing to the Redbox kind of customer.
Problem 2 with Netflix and New releases: their front page cheats. It doesn't simply list all the new releases that came out that week. So I'm guessing the front page is sponsored, which is why the same movies appear on it week after week. The Lovely Bones on the new release page? Really Netflix? Really?

draxxx: sounds like you want an iTunes for porn. Me too. But I don't fucking want per-minute pricing. I fucking HATE per minute. Give me a Netflix for porn and you'll get $50 a month out of me if the catalog is deep.
nameless: You won't find prices online cheaper than in my stores. For feck's sake, I'm selling used DVD's for the most part! I shouldn't try and feck ya on the price, mate!
Another problem circumvented for us is that we opened after the internet revolution was no longer a revolution, AND in a college town. So we haven't had as big an effect on losing people to net porn because we never really had them from the beginning (on the porn side at least). Our main porn customers can be broken down as such:

1. the baby boomers (who aren't as facile with computers, but who are facile in getting their insurance to pay for viagra. Yay wisdom!)
2. poorer people (downloading "free" porn costs $500 for a computer and $60 a month for internet)
3. porn newbies (usually also getting toys)
4. *sigh* addicts (not even fios or DOCSIS 3 is faster than renting 10 DVD's in 10 minutes at a shop)
5. connoisseurs (who appreciate the superiority of DVD over 'net pr0n)

I've never paid much attention to Netflix's main page. I add movies whenever I see trailers I like. I think my unreleased queue is bigger than my available queue. Their streaming selection has improved vastly over the last few years.

Me too -- I guess that's why I like instant watch -- for all those great older movies.
This, I cannot claim! I do ok, but I'm not a genius at it. That said (taking into account all your excellent points regarding the diversity of audience wants), I get my movies from online retail stores, Blockbuster, a local indie rental store (only one left, and with a HUGE adult film section of ever category imaginable), netflix (two accounts), and of course good ole OnDemand. I used to rent from four different stores in town on top of this, but they closed. So, I guess I have all the bases covered, and your average citizen isn't going to go to such lengths.
Bottom line: I still frequent the retailers/rentals.

I forgot to mention the most important thing our stores do: new product every single week. This is how we get the addict dollar.

Also Gore: I'm searching for Netflix-like pornsites. Which ones have you used? Bush? Sugar?

^ I buy all my porn. Of course, if there was a good netflix type porn site, I maybe would use it. If the format was the same. Typically though, I need to own hard copies of all my films.
Oh, and me and my partner have mostly the same tastes, but they diverge occasionally in important respects. Therefore, we like separate accounts. We usually watch whatever the other ordered, but every now and again it's a one-person affair. Regardless, most of my movie watching stems from purchases.

Vanilla porn stores are closing however adult book stores and theaters are flourishing. Sometimes I feel as if I am the only avant-garde member of ADT.
People are having sex in adult book stores and theaters. Women are giving blow jobs in public and are fucking strangers while on gynecological chairs with their legs spread.

Gore: not to press to far into your business, but I'm only saying this because I want to save you money: When you upgrade a Netflix account, you can have up to 8 different queues and up to 6 separate people watching Instant Watch from one account. Just letting you know...not pressing into your privacy.

Dude, this is the story of my life: bookstores, record/cd stores, head shops and porn shacks. I've cleaned out porn racks recently in Montana and Nevada as mom and pop shops who had porn selections give up the ghost. The one store in Missoula that went out (nice to get Jules Jordan disks 3 for $25!) said that the porn rentals were doing okay but Netflix and Redbox had killed off the mainstream side and he didn't want to continue only as an X rated shop.
My local porn shack in Evanston Wyoming (Goldies chain) has definitely cut back on DVD rack space. Probably half what it was 2-3 years ago. The space was converted to more novelties and adult fashion wear.
Sad. Nothing more fun on a Sunday after noon then waking 'n' baking and killing time looking at rack after rack of porn.

Rosco: I agree that paying $60 for an Elegant Angel title is ludicrous. But is this b/c the distibutors refuse to lower their per unit price?

This is a strange recent phenomenon. My parents live in NOrthern Montana and I drive up there twice a year to check it out. IN the past 3 years or so Adam and Eve has opened 3 boutiques in Montana: Missoula, Bozeman and recently (six monthns ago) Great Falls. Do they have a particuarly good business model b/c their stores are decent but nothing earth shattering to think they could expand in a shrinking market.

So will DVDs become the "loss leader" to get people in the store to buy toys and lingerie? That was the original Beast Buy/Circus Shitty model. Come in for a CD or video and buy a refrigerator. Our local Best Buys are down to about two racks of CDs. And about half of the shelf space for DVDs.

I've never understood how those stores could actually stay in business. I still go in stores where certain titles are 50-60 bucks a pop. Bad enough that the 'new releases' cost that much but they'll have movies that are 2 years old at that same price. I know dealer cost isn't anywhere near that price so I don't know why they'd rather be stuck them with rather than eventually mark them down and move product. I've always figured it was better to move the product at a reduced profit than sit on inventory that haven't moved in years.

They make their business mostly from married guys forking over $6-10 a shot watching vids in the booths. They're probably not seriously expecting to move many units at $60 a shot

Are you a buyer for the Adult Superstores chain? If so, I haven't noticed a big scaling back of DVDs at their locations. The store on Tropicana is amazing.

Torris,
I buy for the Deja Vu stores in Las Vegas. I'm in competition with the Adult Superstores, but my prices are cheaper, I have a better selection, and I buy almost every new release on the market. I shop their stores just to see what they're doing. They do more rentals than I do, but that's because we've never been a renting store. While I have some rentals, it's never been a money maker for us. Most of the time, the disc never comes back or it's scratched to all hell, and the card declines when I try to charge to cost to the guy. Waste of money when I put Ass Worship #12 in rental, gets 1 rent, and gets stolen. Now I'm out $20.
The Adult Superstores sell Jules Jordan at $60 per title, or buy 3 get 1 free. I sell them at $44.95 for a double disc, or $39.95 single disc. I sell every other major studio except Evil, Digital Playground, and Wicked under $30. And Torris, I also have a rack with 4 dvds for $15. You can't beat that anywhere. And it's not like they're all Leisure Time or Maverick. I've put West Coast, Rodney Moore, EXP, Digital Sin, Red Light, etc on that rack. Most aren't previous rentals, only previous theater movies. And when one of my stores goes under, I take all their inventory and charge cost or below. It's the only way to keep my raincoaters coming back.
I have a question for Bustdowngal. How do you have the same pricing as adultdvdempire? You're telling me you bring in new release dvds to make $4 per title? They sell Elegant at $19.99. Battle of the Asses #3 at your store is $19.99?

Not only that, the store is nice and clean compared to A.S.S., doesn't have that super sleazy feel the originates from the booth section. And, the sales staff is actually helpful and friendly when it comes to locating products.

As lilacwine said, they make most of their dough off of sex toys and lingere. They were/are one of the biggest, most profitable businesses in porn based off of their mail order business. I would guess those middle aged couples in the mid-West are keeping them rolling in it.

Dude, who the hell do you have working in your stores? You only need a couple of people with a brain in their head. Your clerks have to be vigilant when it comes to renting to people.
When someone comes up to the counter to rent the clerk automatically checks the card on file to see if it's expired. If it's expired the clerk asks for a card with a valid date, if the customer can't produce one they have to leave a deposit on the movie. Full price including tax + the rental fee that way if the movie doesn't come back...you've got your full price for it.
The clerk also checks the rental history. They red flag people all the time for multiple late returns and unpaid late fees. If the customer is shown to have a bad history on lates and owing money on them they don't get any more movies until they are paid up and even then they are placed on a rental only upon full deposit basis.
New customers to the store have to leave a deposit until they are known for awhile, then they can swith to credit cards.
Every month you have one of the clerks on a slow day go through all the accounts. Anyone who hasn't rented anything in more than 2 months gets deleted. Anyone that owes late fees gets red flagged.
It's simple. All you need is a couple of decent employees that can follow simple instructions or that arn't too lazy to follow them.

LOL I was thinking the same. But I get the sense they don't really want to be in the rental business so they run it in a half-assed way. There are a couple of stores in my area like that; they are geared toward arcade/sales and seem to regard the rental business as a nuisance or afterthought.

For new Elegant titles we pay $15-21. Yes, if someone buys it on New Porn Day we may only make $4 on that one unit. But we rent as well. That means each title has rental and sales revenue streams. We charge $5 for rentals, so we make per-unit profit pretty rapidly considering the bulk of our orders are cheap product that's under $5 each. Don't get me wrong-we buy plenty of the good stuff. But people love our deal of buying 3 pornos for $20, so we're going to keep letting them do it with that cheap Leisure Time product. Most people, even most raincoaters in my stores, are not connoisseurs, but fetishists. What I mean by that distinction is that most of my customers don't care about quality or "artistic porn vision." They like facial cumshots, or they like black cheerleaders, or they like blond twinks. They don't care about finding titles that win awards, but about finding titles that appeal to their particular paraphilia.
Our store is not your typical sticky porn shop in the industrial section of town. Our stores are in residential areas and are very much your old school 90s-looking neighborhood video store next to CVS with an adult room in the back. Except our adult room is just under the county's floor-plan proportion requirements for being labelled an adult business. So, we have neighborhood kids coming in and renting Despicable Me while on the other side of a wall a couple is looking at clit bullets. So Thorn, I think our stores being "neighborhood stores," we don't have a high proportion of bad rental customers who stiff us. Not returning a rented DVD counts as a minor crime in our county, actually. So we prosecute anyone whose credit card didn't work when we tried to charge $20 per missing DVD to it.

This seems totally accurate. I was in a store recently and the parking lot was packed. I mean jam packed. I thought maybe there was some sort of signing going on. When I walked in the store itself was practically empty. Lots of noise coming from the booths though. LOL!
I had been to this store before and it seems to be doing well. Elegant Angel was going for 19.99 (new releases included). Digital Playground for about 30.00. Everything else I just gave cursory glances at and prices were competitive with online (probably why they're doing okay). The clothing and lubricants (total impusle buy, like candy bars in the grocery store) seemed to be flying off the shelves.
I honestly think this store could pay it's monthly utilities and a good chunk of salaries off the lube, clothing, and booths alone. Additionally they started online ordering and shipping as well. Stores will likely need to saddle up and get on the internet, just like every other retailer.

LOL. This is the case when I go to the store to shop. But at the place I go to, there's a front parking lot, and a back parking lot. Guess where everyone parks. When you pull into the front lot (facing the busy road), you maybe see 1-2 cars (probably the dudes who work there). And it's not like you can really see the cars, there's a fence and bushes planted in front of them. Not to mention the cars are zooming past the store, so who's really paying attention.
Then when you walk in, you see a few people shopping, and a few in and around the booths. I just have to shake my head and laugh when I'm shopping around and all you hear is people bumping uglies.

M.B. and Ninja,
I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Here is an example of what I was talking about: New customer comes in, signs up for a rental account, rents a dvd for $5 for 3 days. We charge their card on the initial rent to make sure the card is valid. Guy doesn't return it by the 3rd day. A week goes by, I call the guy to see what's up. No return call. 2 days later, I call the guy again, and again no return call. I then go to charge his card at day 14 (per the agreement) and his card declines. It continues to decline for the next 2 months. What next?
What you're suggesting we do is what we're already doing. We purge accounts every 3 months. A customer cannot rent with outstanding late fees. Our system flags any customer with more than 2 late fees on his account. The only thing we can't and won't do is deposits. My company and I will not be responsible for someone's money. I work for a corporation, and they will not be liable for anything like that. Also, it's tough to hire good help when you pay minimum wage. I can't help that part, as my bosses will not let me up my payroll. Sure, I have some great employees, and I also have warm bodies that I hope can scan barcodes and give the change the computer says to give. With over 20 employees at both locations, it's tough to have them all be worth a shit.
Our best year of rental (4 years ago), we were doing maybe $100 a day. That is 1% of our revenue. One, just one Lelo or We-Vibe can retail for double that. Where would your concentration be? Nowadays, we do less than $30 per day, which is abysmal. I've tried everything as far as content goes, and I even offer a credit to any customer who brings the dvd back within 36 hours. We also offer a free rent after every 8 rents. It's not from me not trying to bring the business in, it's just not there altogether. I've spoken to my competetion (I'm actually friends with their buyer), and he gives me the same impression. We do over $2k per day in DVD sales. And I also offer great discounts to my regulars. And I take special orders, especially on hard to find titles. If the title is in print, and with my resources, I can pretty much find any title.
With regards to it being a nuisance, it is not. The arcade and theater are much more troublesome, but they make about 15 times the money that rental does.
So again, it's not lack of trying to create the business. The business is just not there.

Bustdowngal,
So if you pay $21 for said Elegant title, you charge $19.95 for it new release even if nobody has rented it? So you're willing to take a $1 dollar loss right off the bat?
My raincoaters tend to be of a different breed. They know when a DVD streets, what stars and directors they like, which studio is of quality, etc. Sure, I have some that only come in and buy cheapies. And they buy by genre, but even then I've got guys going thru my discount Hush Hush and Dreamgirls and Bluebird and Evil section because they know that these products are quality. They leave the Dirty Debs, Leisure Time, Maverick, etc alone because they know that is just garbage and they'll be lucky to get the DVD that is actually advertised on the box. Sure, that stuff costs less than everything, but I'm more interested in my customer returning to buy than being pissed off cuz I sold him some Leisure Time movie that is utter crap.
And my big store is a residential store. It's on the busiest road in the city, across from the most popular locals casino in the city. Still, we get stiffed on rentals all the time. We use them like we use magazines, hopefully the guy buys something other than the rental or magazine.

On a regular basis, I encounter situations where a customer is complaining or arguing about a cheap compilation DVD purchase.
BTW, what is a raincoater?

no, we charge $25-$30 for a $21 title.
My raincoaters do not know when a DVD streets. Anyone who knows when a porn DVD streets is probably an internet porn hound and is getting his porn online. He is not our customer except when his kids want to watch Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Our porn customers see trailers for videos on their DVD's and ask us for those, but they don't know street dates. If we don't have it, it's not that big a deal because they know we get 50 new DVD's and 100 cheap catalog every single week without fail.
We don't get everything when it streets because [sigh] our distributor gives us better prices if we don't insist on making him work too hard to fill our order with exact titles. He likes to give us stacks from a particular studio without paying close attention to exactly what's in there. So we usually get things within a month of streeting.
But I have customers that love cheap porn. If their DVD is bad we exchange it for them without a fuss. And they usually get the same brand. In my experience, for every type of porn there is, there is a set of people who like it. Amongst customers, there is no universal idea of "bad" porn. Opinions are very individualized. In the real world, without all these porn review websites, people don't talk about their porn use with anyone. It's not a part of their socialization. Their tastes are developed privately without much influence from family, friends and culture.

^ Lots of options, depends on your tastes when it comes to websites. I've had good experiences with are Kissmegirl.com and Ifeelmyself.com but that's because they specialize in stuff you can't get on DVD (although Kissmegirl has started to release DVDs as well).
I've gotten into using adultempire.com to download drm-free videos from Elegant Angel and Evil Angel, etc, but they price for that is around the same as buying a DVD, but I do save a lot on shipping and customs, so I only use it for titles I know I'm going to like. They also have a $1.99 one day streaming rental option which is pretty good for checking something out.

I went by a place in Grandview, MO last night that said they're closing soon. But I don't consider it to be any great loss. I've been by there different times before when I've been in the area. The place is in fact called the News Stand, with a front room for mainstream periodicals. In the adult magazine rack, I did like that they would actually have sample magazines out of the bags for a lot of the current issues, so you could leaf through a magazine* for a while before grabbing a bagged copy to buy. I suppose I will miss that, although I'm not sure how much longer I'll live in the region, and I don't buy magazines that often, anyway.
But it is/was a place with viewing booths, and lots of movies from the cheaper studios. And a few toys. I don't know if they even ever got any movies from the pricier studios. If so, it was never a large percentage of their inventory. I'd bet they made most of their money off of viewing booths. I've never used a viewing booth myself, anywhere. And I never bought anything but magazines from the News Stand. They didn't even rent. They had an exchange program, wherein movies that you've bought from them could be returned with the receipt and exchanged for another movie, for a modest fee. But you would never actually get your money back for paying full price for the initial movie you bought from them, and like I said, they liked the cheap studios.

*I don't really like porn print mags in the internet age, as they're actually kind of pricey at full news stand MSRP, and since the XXX magazines more often than not license existing photos from photographers rather than commissioning new, completely exclusive shoots, chances are good that you've already seen the photos used in a layout, online. But I'll still buy the occasional print mag if one of my fave girls does a press release about being on the cover of one and having an interview inside. It's something physical to have her sign the next time I see her, anyway.

I have no idea what the quality of their DVDs are these days but I used to be a fan of the LEISURE TIME, MAVERICK, cheap compilation stuff. It was a great way to see girls from the past in scenes I couldn't find or see elsewhere. The scenes were from the big studios and the girls were some of the big stars of their day. Sure, the quailty was sorta low but they generally looked okay until you fast forwarded (but the reason I'm ff is because I don't want to see that part anyway). Sure, some of those DVDs were loaded with ads (but with DVDs skipping that stuff is no problem). I'm a fan of complilation DVDs because it's all kinds of speciality stuff grouped on one DVD. Big Breasts, anal, DPs, black, Latin, IR, big butts, all scenes starring a certain girl, etc...and all for a very good price.
I like and prefer to have higher quality stuff but the higher quality stuff doesn't always offer what I like or offer as much as I like at such a good price. I know what I'm getting with the cheaper compilation DVDs ie: lower picture quality and ads but it's worth the trade off to me.
I can totally understand why the people who post on this site wouldn't like that stuff but you guys aren't the typical porn consumer. For many people those cheap porn compilations meet their needs just fine.

The two porn shops I shop/rent from have been rearranging their stores quite often lately and the DVD space gets smaller and smaller. On the upside, they're offering better deals on DVDs in an effort to get rid of them. On the down side they all get fewer new releases theses days. I find that I'm buying more stuff online because that's the only way I'll be able to see them. Sometimes, that's not so bad because it's good stuff, sometimes the movies aren't as good as I had hoped and I really wish I could've rented it first. The good thing is that the online prices of movies are dropping and if I'm willing to wait a bit, I can get some good deals from the site I buy from.

That's the exact reason I WOULD buy the cheapie 2.95 porn. Sure, quality's not there, but you get what you want for next to nothing. Don't like something? Fast forward. Supplements to the ever growing porn collection...lol.

I don't know if I agree with this, often it's a case of not knowing there's anything better out there. When I first started buying porn pre-internet there wasn't really anyway to know what was good and what was bad. I didn't knowingly pick up a comp, I just picked up something based on the cover and what I could see on the back. Sometimes it was better stuff like John Leslie's stuff for Evil Angel, more often it was crap from Rosebud.
The shitty porn eventually was so much that it drove me away from bothering with porn for years. Those cheap porn comps may do for some but I'd bet they turn off a fair number as well.
But these days with the internet it's much easier to find out what is good or bad, know studios, directors and performers, etc. Not everyone posts on a site like ADT but I think the average porn consumer is probably much better informed than one may think, at least when it comes to finding girls they like.

^ I really don't think it's hard for anyone to look at a MAVERICK comp and think it's the same quality as a typical EVIL ANGEL movie. How can people not know there's anything better out there when there in the store and it's very obvious in price and looks that there's plenty of higher quality stuff right there a few feet away? How can anyone walk into a store and see 40-60 dollar movies and pick up the ones for 5 bucks and not expect it to be lower quality? I don't think MAVERICK, LEISURE or any of the cheaper comps are trying to fool anyone as to what they are. And what they are is often good enough for some people. I still buy stuff from ROSEBUD and don't consider it "crap" at all. They often have girls/scenes from the past I want to see. Of couse the quality isn't up to the new stuff of today but no movie from years ago is. The quality of their stuff is just fine all things considered.
Again, you have to remember most porn watchers aren't anywhere near as picky as the people on this site. As long as they think the girls look okay and are having sex it's more than enough for them. The average porn watcher doesn't care about companies, directors, the hot girl of the moment, and what the newest release is.

^ I've had converations with guys where porn comes up and more often than not the talk about actual sex acts more than anything else. The next most talked about thing would be a spcific girl and most of the time it's a girl from years ago and never a current star. I think the average porn buyer is more concerned with getting more bang for their buck over "quality". Not all, but a lot I'd guess are like that.

1. I think sometimes porn fanboys overstate the quality of "the good stuff". Meaning that "regular" porn customers see both Evil Angel and Leisure Time and classify them both as "nowhere near as good as the movie I saw at the megaplex last weekend." To most people, the highest quality porn is the same level of quality as a bad direct-to-video mainstream movie. Plus, Evil Angel doesn't serve everyone. If you like black women, big tits or bbw's, then you're going to walk past all those small-bootied Evil Angel nymphs and peruse the boxcovers that have compilations that feature your kind of sexual fantasy.
[btw yes I know he's "Buttman" but those booties AIN'T big according to real men in real America where a 200-pound woman is an *average* weight.]
2. In a world where there's never been an uber-successful bricks-and-mortar porn mega-retailer (a la Blockbuster or Movie Gallery), the general public never got to see a proper corporate business model for such. And now they never will. Most indie porn stores never got the basics down, so the general stereotype of a porn shop always remained negative to the porn newbie. It's telling that hardcore pornfans like ourselves don't think twice that it might be weird for a porn newbie to walk into an establishment where men are in booths masturbating.
[btw Canada seems to have more successful porn chains than the US]
3. nameless1 I haven't given up on retail, but Videobox is the best website. Unlimited downloads with no time limits for 1 set price a month. I'm loving it. [You can watch the movies instantly too.] For the price of 2 Evil Angel downloads you can download 100 movies. Good luck watching them in a timely fashion, but yeah you get me. The only reason it might not satisfy you is if you're a porn addict who must have new releases every day. They don't get new releases anywhere near their street dates. They are mostly catalog. But GOOD catalog from the past 10 years.
4. If you look at the lists of top-selling DVD's of all time, there is no thread of "quality" amongst them. And some of them ARE compilations.

You're right about companies, directors, new releases, etc but not girls. If someone finds a girl they like, they want more of her. As for how picky porn watchers are, it's hard to know, seems like if porn ever comes up in conversation you can tell from people's comments that most of the porn they've seen is substandard stuff. Most people think porn is unerotic garbage because they don't know how to find the good stuff.
As for Rosebud, some of the stuff Silvera shot for them was okay or even great like Kink, but the Borsky stuff is unmitigated garbage, and I say that as someone who loves Derenzy's features from the 70s and 80s. I remember picking up their videos because they'd have some cute girl with a bubble butt on the cover but the actual video would be endless close-ups of penis in anus with no proper shots of the girl's body or booty.

^ I'm not trying to be funny but you're going to have to define what and why certain stuff is what you're calling "crap", "garbage" and "good stuff". I really think you have this high standard judging porn that most people don't don't hold to the same level.
I totally understand that the new stuff from EVIL ANGEL is of a higher quality than a typical ROSEBUD movie because of picture quality and perhaps direction. But I really don't see the ROSEBUD, MAVERICK, MILEHIGH, etc., stuff beings so terrible it turns people off to porn altogether or that the "good stuff" is so great it converts people to thinking porn is this high standard medium. For me and I'd assume many other people there are times when I'd pick the the old ROSEBUD release over a new EVIL ANGEL movie even if they were the same price. Just because the EA movie is of better quality that doesn't mean it's going to always have what I want to see vs the ROSEBUD movie. There's ROSEBUD releases with some great classic Jules Jordan stuff and with some great 80/90s performers I can't see anywhere else these days. I wouldn't consider that "crap".
