I have had a great first year thus far however I have also observed the controversies of being black in porn...I know I know OMG another convo about it. But honestly Im just curious and only get limited info every time. I just did another Black parody (First one was Black Jersey Shore/Acid Rain...then Black Desperate Housewives of Baldwin Hills/Acid Rain)....this time I did Fresh Prince of Bel-Air... Now I just want to know what qualifies a black parody to get nominated or recognized as a good film? or a AVN nominated film? Be Honest. No Fighting. Hey Imani, I saw you in a few movies this year and have enjoyed your performances a lot. I have a rather basic theory about this. It seems as though black porn is not as popular as white or general porn, I say general as in mixed ethnic cast. This also goes for latin, and asian porn. There does seem to be a racial bias somewhere. I personally love black porn, and as a white guy, I think I'm kind of in the minority there. People seem to prefer movies with a mixed cast or white girls. So as an extention of that, black parodies don't sell as well as others. For starters, I personally couldn't care less about parodies in general, and I don't think they get as much attention as original movies because people simply don't care about them as much. Another thing is that most of the black parodies aren't of shows/movies that are as popular as others. let's compare some like the "Friday" parody that DeWayne Dane did earlier this year, and the one that stood out the most IMO; to the "Batman" parody, which was probebly the most highly anticipated one yet, that was made by Vivid. Which bring me to another point, the studios. Acid Rain isn't really a very popular studio, they are considered to be a lower level studio along with Devil's Films, New Sensations, Red Light, Anabolic, etc. I think if those parodies had been made by a studio like Zero Tolerance, Vivid, Elegant Angel, or some other top studio, they would've gotten a lot more recognition. That's just my two cents, I believe they are considered like the others, but not as successful. My personal opinion: Give up on the parodies in general. I think it's a dumb trend and it will fizzle out in the next year or two anyway. There has been a huge lack of all black original features, and the great black/ethnic directors like Alex DeVoe, L.T., B. Pumper, and Justin Slayer should try making something really fresh and new for a change, there is a lot of ground to be broken. Can't wait to see more from you Imani!
Imani---I checked out your profile on IAFD and noticed that no one has reviewed two of the parodies that you mentioned. I'm guessing that the glut of porn parodies out there is the reason and a parody with an African American cast might take up the rear in terms of interest. I also noticed that RACIALLY MOTIVATED (an IR gonzo disc) had six reviews and a few raved about your performance so that's a good thing. Just keep working, try to work where you feel most comfortable, try to work with directors that know what they are doing then who knows? I tend to review newer features (non-parody) and classic titles (when available) from ADT's screener list. Some gonzo discs, too. PS---I just noticed that the Fresh Prince parody has a release date of Nov 2, 2010, which was a few days ago. As of today, it's in the top price searches so maybe this DVD will spark some interest. Good luck---TB
I would happily purchase a feature that stars an all-black cast, an all-"asian" cast, or any combination of any race. I think the bottom line is that due to various reasons, the budgets are lower for all-black productions and the quality suffers as a result. celluloid mentioned Friday as an example of a lesser known flick being parodied, arguing that as a reason for less interest, but I disagree - I love the movie Friday, but didn't pick this one up because it seemed too cheaply made (bear in mind I wish everything was shot on film). The best "black" feature I've seen recently is AfroDite Superstar. It's excellent. It's also an original script. If the parody is brilliantly made (which few of them are, even the bigger budget ones), then that's cool, but nothing beats a well-made, lovingly-crafted original film. I'd pick that up in a heartbeat, black, white, or whatever.
I wasn't saying "Friday" wasn't a popular movie. I liked it, and I know many people consider it something of a cult classic, but compare that to the likes of Batman, Avatar, Star Wars, Twilight, or TV shows like The X Files, Seinfeld, M*A*S*H, etc. It's not much of a contest in general popularity. That's all I was getting at.
^ I know, I wasn't intending to suggest otherwise. I was just saying that I don't think that's the main reason - I think quality and budget are the main reasons, at least for me.

The Cosby Show parody seemed to have done well, commerically at least. I think the budgets and effort put into being close to the original does make a difference, as GG says, I watched a bit of the Jersey Shore XXX and it didn't seem to have much to do with the show. Best to stick with material that an all-black or racially mixed cast would make sense in. The Fresh Prince parody sounds like the right idea to me. Great cast with Misty Stone and Sinnamon Love as well! I'd love to see a porn parody of Pam Grier's 70s films like Foxy Brown and Coffy. Imani is a major cutie btw, I'd be interested in checking out anything with her in it.
Imani - There really is no good answer to your question. While there are several big Black companies they still don't have the ability to throw money at a film like say X-Play, Wicked, Digital, et al do. They also don't have the press machines those companies do either. They have to rely more on word or mouth and good reviews but even that can only do so much. So even when they put out a good product it can easily get lost in the thousands of titles released each year.

The "Official Shaft Parody" is a damn good one! Excellent video quality. Great sex. Beautiful ladies beautifully shot. Plus, it gracefully fulfills the multi-ethnic formula referred to by celluloidferox. The "Official Shaft Parody", done by the Black Ice studio, features a sort of neapolitan trio of black, blonde and asian flavors: Naomi Banxxx, Austin Taylor and Jessica Bangkok. Maybe this flick can get AVN attention, not that I care or will be paying attention.
