Man I never had to deal with crappier hardware. Needless to say not only did it have problems reading dvd's half the time it couldn't even read regular CD's! And firmware updates always seen to help. I've had a couple of friends that I've had to help them upgrade the firmware on their computer drives just so they could watch some dvd-r's I made. The actual brands of dvd media certain drives can play are actually burned into the drives rom somewhere.
