I've always assumed it was because the store removes the the dvd from the case, so it won't get ripped off. I'm curious, are mail order adult dvds shrink wrapped? CC [Link]

The retailer/distributor will generally shrink wrap these themselves after inspecting them or return the items to the souce but once in a while an unwrapped item will get shipped to a customer. I've been reading various post, here at ADT, and one person (forgot the name) mentioned buying new dvds that had been scratched, and then I noticed that several major retailers are renting now, so my concern is that I'll be paying new dvd prices for movies that might actually be used. Oh, and I'm still curious about the shrink wrap question Thanks CC [Link]

Off-hand, I can only remember two that weren't and I do not question their "newness." The problem with scratched discs is usually a result of poor packaging: the disc pops off its retaining clip (or the clip breaks) as a result of rough handling during transport. The scratches are caused by the disc's surface scraping against the clip (or its broken edges) as the package is jostled. Sadly, this is the fault of the poor DVD case design, not of UPS, FedEx, or the USPS. I've had no trouble returning damaged discs for replacement the few times it has happened. It is simply a nuisance having to send them back (plus it adds to their cost because of the return postage). ~ GaySatyr [Link]

Or what about cracking a dvd ring while attempting to remove it from the hub. I had that happen once, even when I was being super careful! CC [Link]

The case is then put into a plastic shell so it can't be reopened (except at the counter). [Link]

Click to expand Actually, I've had better luck with discs shipped using this methodology than I have with shrink wrapped discs in the case because, since they can't come off of their spindle ('cause there's no spindle for them to come off of) they're less likely to be scratched in transit. I wish they had a better system than the spindle, I mean some DVD's are very hard to push from the spindle. [Link]
shakfah MoviesByMail.com 59 Posts 10/03	Posted - Feb 21 2004 : 9:12AM Hi We run into this problem allot, our shipping department does open some of the DVD movies before shipping because the disc is moving around inside and we don't want it to get scratched before delivery, so they open it and reset the disc, we usually don't shrink wrap the movies afterwards. Most of my orders from the US ( to England ) have been sent without the cases . This is a very useful policy from my perspective as it reduces both the overall weight of the package and the bulk , making it less likely that the curious guys at customs will investigate further . It might also make for a speedier delivery as well , though I'm not too sure of that . [Link]

In addition, although I do not ship internationally, it's true as other members have noted that you do not get a boxcover for customs reasons (the smaller and lighter the package, the easier to slip by customs unnoticed).
