Back in the day it was not unusual for a guy to drop 100 quarters in a slippery, crusty peep booth just to get off.
That same dude is still around, with the exact same mentality.
Porn has been looking to widen the audience since the 80s.
Not happening.

Basically women are turned on by almost anything biologically but either they llied because it wasn't proper for a woman or just ignore their physical reactions because they were educated to do so.
but then again this would only prove that women are aroused even more than men , but mostly don't allow such arousal to get in.
In my view there is no way to extend porn to a new audience , those women who are not afraid to follow up their desires already consume porn , for the other it's cultural , there would be no way to reach them.
I remember another thread here discussing our tastes in porn , by our tastes some would think that I am the girl and you the man according to some statements here

That's exactly why any attempt to make porn for the "average woman" is bound to fail. When viewers look at the work of female directors today, not just from major names like Mason (who I love) but also films from people like the great Shine Louise Houston who are basically working outside of the system, it is immediately clear that womens' taste in porn is far from uniform and defies attempts at generalization. There is no average female porn viewer and searching for her is futile. Meanwhile, real women who actually exist are directing incredible porn and the industry at large would be wise to give them plenty of support and encouragement while greatly increasing their numbers.

Interpretation wouldn't be easy, but it would be used to help give producers an idea of the kinds of elements for female directors to experiment with.
The one flaw with the study you referenced is the environment of observation - if we know that many women need more than just visual stimulation for arousal, measuring arousal by taping electrodes to the genitals and flashing videos in a lab environment probably won't help us learn much :)
I keep bringing up the need to expand beyond just visual stimulation, as I have a feeling that the whole paradigm needs to shift towards something more interactive. For example, maybe there is a certain brain wavelength that corresponds to an orgasmic state - mood music of specific tone/harmonic patterns might also be used more to enhance arousal. Just a thought

I agree with you, that women's tastes are far more varied than the current target audience. That said, women aren't entirely snowflakes, each with 100% unique tastes. There are bound to be clusters or segments that share certain tastes. Look at how Hollywood does that for mainstream movies - studios don't produce or distribute just one type of movie that appeals to just one specific audience - nor do they attempt more than one or two films per year aimed at a universal audience (the "blockbuster"). There are action movies, chick flicks, children's movies, teen movies within their repertoire, each designed to appeal to a different major demographic segment. I believe there are "taste groupings" within that female audience.
You seem pretty knowledgeable about the up and coming female directors. Have any favorites or recommendations?

^Insofar as new girls I have to admit that none immediately come to mind. A lot of my favorite directors have been working for years already but with little recognition from the industry at large. Courtney Trouble, for example, makes great films year after year but isn't nearly as well known as she deserves (though she's a celebrity in my social circle).

Very interesting porn service that has a lot of big names: customs4u.com
Basically, it's like fiverr, except for porn. You can select by your fetish or by favorite model, select desired video quality, length, additional fantasy details of your choosing and delivery date, and the chosen model will make a video for you.

Here is my two cents on this:
When I first started watching porn, it was at the tail end of the 20th century, and I got really into blowjob and handjob scenes. I became really turned on by watching the girl pleasure the guy to orgasm, and watching the girl, in turn, become aroused (or successfully fake being aroused) by satisfying the guy. Ever since then, I have craved porn that does the same: Showcases a girl pleasuring a guy, and enjoying herself.
As a guy, I want to see girls getting off, and girls making guys get off.
Unfortunately, with the rise of the internet, things went in a completely crazy direction.
Porn scenes are now totally about the guy. These guys that have no personality, are hairless as babies, and often horse-cocked to the nth degree, looking like a party favor from a bachelorette party.
The girl basically exists to be the puppet in the scene, and has zero control, and thus almost no ability to convey her own pleasure, or to concentrate on pleasing her partner in the scene. This is why 95% of porn now has guys beating themselves off at the end. Not even the male performer can properly orgasm anymore, and essentially, both parties are unable to give/receive a handjob/blowjob to finish. So something that teens do in college (or even beforehand) now cannot be accomplished in most professional porn scenes.
There's also too much extreme, disgusting porn now, where it is crystal clear that the girl is both doing it for the money and/or because she does it "for" a producer/director, as if these people run a circus of sexual acts. For instance, someone who will only take a baseball bat up their ass "because it's for [insert director's name]" and what is essentially being said is: "I don't get off on this, but since you're paying me and I know you won't intentionally hurt me, have at it." Yeah, really hot.
The hybrid of this problem is that what little erotic porn still exists is too inconsistent, and doesn't feature professional performers. Amateurs are great, but I'd prefer to see something professionally shot and performed by women who take a lot of care to craft their look (and often their bodies). I also have no desire to download anymore, so web sites are kind of left out in the cold.
And another thing, I love Blu-ray a lot, but I miss the old 4:3 SD days, because in so many of these videos, even big talent ones like Axel Braun parodies, nobody knows how to shoot in 16:9 format. The lack of close-ups is appalling (I want to see anatomical details, damn it) and in tandem, the amount of dead space around each shot has increased dramatically. Now you will be watching a scene, and instead of seeing a giant cock being carefully moistened by thick soft lips and a wet tongue, you will see a girl sucking on a stick (or bobbing around in some guys crotch) from a slight distance, with pictures and furniture and couches around. I don't need to see all of your furniture. I need to see that bead of pre-cum she licks off a cock. I want to see just how wet her pussy gets. For lesbian scenes, I want fingers entering slick, wet holes, and I want to see the details in labia and clitori, not some girl's head, or both girls legs, getting in the way of where the actual pleasuring is going on.
I know that sounds kind of crazy, but I swear that by and large, we got better framing and more and better closeups when porn was in the 4:3 format (and this in spite of the limits of SD resolution).

Wow. Some really interesting observation, particularly around the absence of "craft" in the shooting. Maybe I've been overthinking it, and the core problems in the broad marketability of porn are down to the pure fundamentals.

Yeah, I was surprised by that lil' tidbit at first, but after thinking for a moment, I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that a lot of women would find it so appealing. Between the settings, dialogue and sex that doesn't get rough and degrading, it makes sense that the content from this studio would be such a hit with female viewers. Also, obviously, there's the "taboo" appeal of it, the IR sex-sexy petite (usually) white woman and the big handsome black man (men).

I honestly don't think anyone male or female watches porn for the storyline. People that say that they do are more than likely just using that as a reason to justify their (unnecessary guilt) for watching porn in the first place.

All porn tells a story. I'll grant you that most people don't ask for a complex storyline, but that's not unique to porn. Such has been the case in pop music for decades.

A porn story-line is like juicy gossip about what the good-looking lady did with the guys.
It's just that not every story-teller is good at telling such stories. Some story-tellers focus on what the lady was wearing and what the guys did before they met the lady. They make you wait for the juicy details. Which is very annoying for everyone who wants to know these details.
As with any gossip, it's the lady you are gossiping about who is most interesting and not just what she did with the guys.
Guys like individual women and not just women in general. And that's why having a new hot lady is an entirely new ball-game for a guy, even when the sex-action is more or less the same as before. Someone like Mike Adriano has worked out a formula for truly and fully debauching the asses of his lasses. And his lack of variation doesn't matter much, because he keeps bringing new hot ladies, who appeal to anal porn-fans.

^+100 for me. I don't need a huge story but any scene is automatically enhanced if there is the addition of a small scenario. Needless to say that if the scenario is more involved, there is longer dialogue, better defined roles and what not than the scene will be that much better. At least it will be for me.

Porn may be targeting the wrong audience but honestly the industry is dead and there is no coming back...the federal govt tried to kill porn and couldn't do it..porn was believed to be indestructible, recession proof and all it took was a couple of studios and racism to end it.

Well if Leya meant "I don't believe anyone male or female watches porn for the storyline ONLY.", then I would agree with the sentence.
But there's no necessity why storyline/set-up should incompatible with sexual arousal, as several posters already mentioned. If a story evokes a certain fantasy scenario that is particularly sexy to a watcher, it will add to the sexual enjoyment of the porn scene.

^I understand that, but I'm not really sure if you're addressing what Leya actually wrote. You haven't said that you watch porn for the storyline, or that you don't, or that you sometimes do. No one has yet replied to Leya's comment with "I watch porn for the storyline." It could be that I'm interpreting Leya's comment inaccurately but her meaning seemed quite clear to me, even without the inclusion of "only."

^I'm not sure what Leya meant to say but for argument sake let's say that she meant that no one would watch a scenario based porn movie if they removed the sex part of the movie. In that case the answer has to be of course they wouldn't because you would be missing an integral part of the movie but the same could be said of mainstream entertainment. How many people would watch an action movie if they removed all the action sequence? The answer is no one.
I don't know about the rest of the people who said they are fans of scenario based porn but I watch plenty of softcore porn movies where there is a story, some well defined characters and no graphic sex and I still get sexually stimulated. In fact I get even more stimulated because I'm no longer watching a performer fucking another performer but I'm instead watching an unhappy married woman being seduced by a younger man or woman. I can think of a dozen amazing softcore movies that would be great hardcore porn movies and who would easily make a profit if only producers were willing and able to make it happen.

Regardless of if it is targeting the wrong audience porn should be held accountable for what it has become...consumers have to take action to stop it. That could be anything from organizing boycotts, make it a trending topic on twitter, support companies who make diverse product or file a racism complaint with the Justice Dept but do something.

I watch porn for the storyline. I am hoping for the day when mainstream films can depict unsimulated sex so that we can combine good acting, good directing, good writing, good cinematography with an erotic experience. It might be tmi, but I prefer to edge when watching a feature length porno, so I don't even really need scenes with 20 minutes straight of sex acts at a time - it can be more plot or story heavy
^
Instead of doing any of that, I just choose not to purchase content from people who make crap porn. Enough people are doing what I'm doing (along with hitting up the tube sites) that studios across the board are feeling the pinch.

If we accept the premise that women make up a considerable market for porn consumers (which I do) I don't think it's as simple as "let's make porn for women" for a solution for a couple of reasons. While I think it's possible to look at some porn and generalize it as "that is porn for men" or "that is porn for women" I don't think you're going to be able to make porn that is going to necessarily be enjoyable by all or even a significant majority of one gender. When categorizing porn as male oriented or female oriented, I think it has less to do with what one gender likes and more to do with what the other gender dislikes.
If we generalize and say hypothetically that plotless, gonzo porn featuring circus acts is male oriented porn, I think that isn't necessarily because a majority of men like that, so much as a majority of women don't like it. (yes, I know certain female participants of this thread actually do like that type of content, way to transcend gender stereotypes! good for you! But the point was to make a generalization but I realize there are exceptions)
So going back to the problem of the neglected female porn consumer I don't think the issue is simply a matter of "make more of this style porn and you'll make more money" because there isn't necessarily one style of porn that is going to appeal to most female porn consumers. Tastes vary significantly among female viewers. So from an economic perspective you're not going to start pursuing 50% of the market by making female oriented porn, it's going to be significantly less than that.
Another thing to take into consideration is the production costs. I know not all female oriented porn is going to need all of these things, some of it likely would and I think it's substantial enough not to ignore... It was established earlier in the thread that female oriented porn is going to have to show a greater focus on plot, acting, aesthetics and other things that cost money. Just like performers charge a premium for things like anal or IR because the market dictates they can, if you suddenly create a demand for performers who can act, that's likely going to cost more that performers who just fuck. If you're looking for plot, you also need writers. Those actors aren't just going to be ad-libbing lines and making up the story as they go. You'll also need sets. Those aren't free either. Granted lots of porn now is shot on a decent set, but I'd argue a lot of those sites already have a significant female audience (take Mason's sites for example) And if you want to go all out you might want the softer look of film as opposed to the harshness of video, which is more difficult and costly to shoot with as well. Point being a lot of the things that are typically associated with female friendly porn aren't cheap.
So I don't think it is necessarily that producers are ignoring a market segment (because they think it won't sell or whatever other reason) so much as they are avoiding things associated with higher production costs.
So I guess it comes down to what you consider the "wrong" audience to be. If the "wrong" audience is an audience that isn't maximizing your profits, then I'd say no I don't think porn is targeting the wrong audience. If by "wrong" audience you mean "not me" then yeah, maybe the valley could be making more porn that you'd like, but if that's your gripe, I'd refer you to the FAQ I half jokingly wrote that is stickied up top. I think many people here (myself included sometimes) overestimate how significant their demographic is. People generally tend to surround themselves with like-minded people who have similar interests, beliefs, political views, and ideologies, etc which gives them a false sense of how the rest of the world thinks. I think Fredgee was the poster child for that.

Tremendous points, murdock. I agree, both with your point about not treating an entire gender as a monolith as well as the higher cost associated with better quality videos.
The issue you've highlighted is that we have businessmen running studios who are stuck in an old market paradigm that because of tube sites and saturation of their product is netting them limited returns. I just don't buy that it's too expensive to innovate when the alternative is a slow death. Mason's websites are relatively inexpensive to subscribe to, and they use the same 5-6 houses. Advances in technology mean that it's far cheaper today to make high quality videos from a camera perspective, and decent editing is also not as labor intensive as it once was.
Instead of investing in R&D to figure out the next market, they are pulling out all the stops to make the old market work - or doubling down on the shock/kink/degredation. Their argument is what you've brought up - high quality porn is expensive. So they stick with the same old, trying desperately to eek out the last few pennies per scene. The forward thinking studios are already innovating - VR porn clearly has a future. Others, like Personal Life Media are using porn to solve a problem (40+ year old married men who want more sex with their wives) via integration with educational materials. Others, like Mason or X-Art or Collette, are simply putting more effort into a basic standard of cinematography and elegance of their sets, and not treating their female talent like shit.
I'm seeing the same kind of thinking in healthcare, where the writing is on the wall - preventive care is the financial future - yet most of the market is *still* unwilling to make the up front investment to avoid having to make major cuts or scramble to survive 5-6 years down the line.

As a guy, I have a qualify anything I am going to say here with the obvious, which is that most women could give a better inside scoop than me, and I don't pretend to be some sort of authority on women and their sexuality. I have talked about this question a good deal with my wife though, and here's what we came away with.
Women might enjoy a more emotional and interactive experience in porn. Look at the market for romantic fiction and literary erotica - it is a billion dollar plus industry and the customers are mostly women. Something about literary erotica speaks to women, and it engages them as customers in numbers on par to men with porn. I think literary erotica can be so engaging because good storytelling fosters more of an emotional connection with the characters. That emotional connection adds a whole different dimension that makes the experience more arousing.
Films with legitimately good storytelling might accomplish the same thing. So could more interactive experiences such as chatting, camming, and social media.

Let me add to your post. If the porn industry thinks that they can take their existing philosophy regarding porn and somehow tweak it to cater to a female audience than they are kidding themselves. I think your average woman doesn't really care all that much about the hardcore aspect of porn. They much prefer the interaction between the performers prior to anything sexual being discussed or shown and they certainly care about the interaction after the sex. I don't think they care all that much about seeing the actual fucking in large part because I think women will automatically see the young thin woman and feel that this in no way represents their actual look and resent that the model is better looking then them. It's different for guys because we don't see a male performer and have issues with his looks or the size of his dick.
I personally think that romance novels and their modern raunchier versions like 50 shades and others have a greater appeal for women than porn because although the women in those books are always described. It's a lot easier to forget that part of the book and by default it makes it a lot easier for women to picture themselves as the heroine because there is visible reminder but that is impossible to do with any type of visible media. Of course there are plenty of ultra popular romantic movies that sort of disprove what I just wrote but I still believe that given the choice between a romantic movie and a romantic novel. Most women will pick the novel.
If the porn industry really wanted to cater to women than they would have to be willing to invest millions of dollars in production cost to create movies that rival what the mainstream media puts but with the add midcore type sex scenes. I can't see too many women lining up to look at a girl/woman get pile driven into a sofa/bed for 45 minutes with an emphasis on the penetration.

I think in general, porn studios are not innovating as well as they could be, which in turn makes it difficult to target the correct audience. While yes, there is only so many ways that you can film certain kinds of scenes, there are different ways to present them, such as a story, higher end camera, etc. As a gay woman, I know I'm in the minority of porn watchers. However, I do think there's a large audience out there that would support a high end lesbian/queer site, as seen by Girlsway's success.

The xxx feature peaked in many ways in terms of quality of storyline, budget, visuals even sexual heat in the early 80s and it was devoured by low quality video.
It wasn't that quality features couldn't make money, it was that crap could make as much money and could be produced at a fraction of the cost.
I would love to believe that better features were the pathway for porn to appeal to a wider audience and make money but I doubt it is true.

Personally, I don't think that talking about the "average woman", "most women" and "the majority of women" gets us anywhere. We can look at subgroups, but audacious generalizations about "most women" are pointless and ultimately counterproductive.

I guess Digital Sin/New Sensation has a lot to answer here. They were so fucking good. 2004-2005 they kinda was the best, Xavier Mann was there and they were shooting great flicks like crazy, then in 2012, they started fooling people. But they could still be the best. Then they started targeting the wrong audience. Yeah. I'll give you credit for that.
