Not sure where else to ask this question, as it doesn't pertain to porn on DVD, and RAME is pretty much a haven for spammers now, but...

I recently came upon an OLD mom and pop video store in my town that was selling their VHS inventory. Like many stores these days, they rent DVDs but still have an inventory of VHS tapes of all kinds that they are trying to unload. I'm not sure for how long they have been selling tapes, but they still had a moderately decent sampling of porn going back to the late eighties so far as I could tell. Anyhow, I picked up a handful of titles. I'm a collector, so when I got home I went through the tapes noting the years they were made, the stars, the distributor and the running times for inclusion on my "list" of porn. But, I was dismayed to notice that the running times were coming up a few minutes short of the times listed on IAFD. There was also one video, that I had seen once before, that was missing an entire sex scene. The tape was "Bad Girls 3" and the scene was between Tammi Ann and Melissa Monet. There was some pretty vigorous strap-on work in the original scene, but I could think of no real reason why they would cut this scene out.

I can only assume this was editing that had to be done due to a lame local ordinance or some such. So, am I correct in assuming that different versions are prepared for the "mom and pop" video stores?

It could have been edited to fit onto a shorter tape, you know.

I've watched movies where the tape ran out in the middle of a scene.

The Vivid Video company used to have a habit of editing their movies to 70 minutes to fit shorter tapes when they re-released them as catalog titles. As a collector, I have learned to watch out for this, and I could tell by the labeling on the tape (in this case, Bad Girls 3) that the video was first issue, and not a catalog re-release.

Interesting!
When I got "Sensations" back in the 80's, there was a piss scene in it.
I recently got it on DVD.
The piss scene was missing?

Pissing is one of those activities that would probably run afoul of community standards somewhere so the scene had to be eliminated in order to reduce the possibility of prosecution. Way too many movies from the "golden age" were chopped up for similar reasons. I think it's ironic that such acts in golden age videos are still being censored, yet we have modern porn that, in my opinion, pushes the envelope with other extreme acts which are just as or even more degrading. If the government ever decides to clean house again, they won't have a difficult time finding material.

10 years ago I bought "Sorority Sex Kittens 2" on VHS. I bought it from a "mainstream" video catalog that had an "After Hours" section. In the description it said "Cable Edit", but I didn't realize what that meant.

When I got the tape I found out what it meant - it was edited down to softcore. All the penetration, money shots, footage of oral sex was carefully trimmed out. Needless to say I never bought another "cable edit" tape again.

I too bought a bunch of those "4 movies on one tape" collections on VHS (and even a few on DVD) from a mail-order dealer. They're alright if you're just looking for cheap stuff, but I quit after buying a compilation with "Playing With Fire". I bought it because it the place advertised it as a Sunrise Adams movie, I had never seen any of her stuff and wanted to. But the bozos cut her scene out - in the version of the movie I have she doesn't appear at all. So now I only buy "official" releases.

yeah, its cable-edit crap!! cable-edit porn sucks!!! BUT heres the problem; across the united states, some towns have outlawed the sale or rental of porn. So in some towns, all they can rent is the cable-edit crap!! seriously, Im not joking. some towns eventually lifted their anti-porn ordinances, but not until years later. I think jacksonville florida used to have anti-porn laws that were eventually challenged and repealed.

In the UK, the British Board of Film Classification censor and edit all adult movies shown on UK satellite. Hard-core "R" rated movies can be bought in sex shops in the UK; but these too sometimes affected by censorship - no slapping or tying up is allowed, even if it is consensual.

It's illegal to buy non R rated adult movies in the UK. But you can import HARD CORE MOVIES UNCUT by the BBFC from abroad quite legally, but obviously these don't have the R rating on them. All R rated movies sold in the UK and abroad have to be watched and perhaps cut by the BBFC. It's a lie therefore to sell R rated "unseen by the BBFC". For it is THEY who issue the R rating.

I was refering to the "sometimes affected by cencorship" part of your post. The BBFC censors porn a lot, not even counting the times when producers cut their movies before they show them to the BBFC, because they already know something is not going to pass.
And it is not illegal to buy unrated movies, it is illegal to sell them.
I should know, I make my living by getting porn to the UK customers.

A couple things...
1) Looking over the BBFC cuts list, I found it interesting that one movie had footage (pardon the pun) of a foot or part of a foot being stuck in a woman's vagina. I have at least one movie where this is done (I believe it is "Hollywood Spa" starring Serenity) and don't really understand how this would be considered violent.
2) Getting back to the "cable edit" thing, does anyone know if they just do careful editing of a hardcore movie, or do they shoot the scenes twice, once with hardcore content and once with softcore? I read a magazine article once that said (at least on one porn set) what they did was shoot the money shot, then cleaned the cum off the actress and then filmed the man pretending to cum inside her for a softcore edit. Seems to me it might be easier to just shoot additional scenes where you rearrange the performers so that nothing "hardcore" is showing. Course I've never actually done anything like that.

For the cable edit, a lot of producers I know use a second camera while shooting the hard scene. Question of choosing the right camera angles and some judicious editing and there is your softcore version.

Definitely. I've always had a thing for Bob Chinn's original 1978 Candy Stripers. Sure you can get the edited version anywhere but because of current obscenity laws a certain double fisting scene remains forever unavailable with the rest of the movie. Maybe someday...

Actually, that double fisting scene is on the DVD, as an easter egg.
