We all have our favorite porn stars, but the number of women who could be even considered "superstars" is a lot smaller. My own list would include such luminaries as Ginger Lynn, Ashlyn Gere, Tera Patrick, Jenna Haze ...
But the purpose of this post is not to get into a debate about who the "superstars" are. It's to ask who the superstars of the future are, and what it would take in today's market to become one? Given the plethora of websites, the decline of studio influence, the number of women who burn out, retire, or, having made a name for themselves, move on to high-dollar escorting after only a few months (not a new phenomenon, I know), and other factors affecting today's porn market, what does it take to set a woman head-and-shoulders above the pack these days, and, assuming she had the desire and skills to get there, how would she do so?

Stormy Daniels is the last superstar.
There won't be any new superstars.
There are still new girls with superstar potential.
But the industry has changed so muched.
Superstars are a phenomenon of the studio system.
But the days when VCA, Wicked, DP and Vivid were strong enough to built up a contract girl to superstardom are over.

I think that Jesse Jane and Sasha Grey are both superstars.
If a performer is beautiful / unique enough, she can become a superstar. Potential cross-over appeal would help, as well. The ability / skills to move into directing would also be a plus. Having one great scene after another, of course, would aid a performer in getting to the top, too.
I don't think that the era of the superstar performer is necessarily over--it just might take a lot more effort and / or a multi-pronged approach to get to that level these days.

I would have to agree with juha. Stormy is the last Superstar that I can think of. Jenna Haze has the tools as well. I think a Superstar can make her mark on everything and anything and do it well. I have seen Stormy in everything from mainstream movies, TV interviews, X-Play and she is very well spoken and understands her appeal in. I think the girl with the most potential is Katie Morgan though. She is smart as hell, funny as hell and we all know she is sexy. If you are gonna be a Superstar you better be an "entertainer" and know how to work this business to its max. I think Katie can join the ranks of the Nina Hartley's, Jenna Jameson's and Marilyn Chambers of the world (god rest her sole), if she keeps it up.

I think it's tough in today's porn market since there are so many of them, and so many willing to get in, or at least, give it a try. Hard for 1 or 2 girls to stand-out among a seeming thousand. Girls simply come-and-go too often these days. Tough for me to get too interested when I know that hot girl will probably be out of the business in maybe 3 years, if they stay that long.

Juha is probably right. Stormy appears to be the biggest star of the porn business at the moment. I remember Jenna Jameson had big hopes for Brianna Banks and Krystal Steal but I don't think they've reached that level despite how well known they are. I think it's a lot harder these days, a lot of the girls are getting more exposure than they would've before thanks to the internet and higher availability of films/scenes there is now a days.
Jesse Jane could make a big name for herself considering her work in Pirates and she's reasonably well known in celebrity circles hanging around various rock stars, going to parties etc. I would say she has potential.

Did there cease to be mainstream movie stars because Hollywood got away from the studio system?
It does take several factors for a girl to become a really popular pornstar, though. First, she has to be a good performer, with good looks and a good personality that comes across on screen. Second, she has to actually want to be a porn superstar, instead of just using porn as a means to furthering her feature dancing and/or escorting careers. Third, she has to be a good self promoter, and if she can inspire loyalty from a core fan base, so much the better. Fourth, she has to no let herself get burned out or shot out in just a few months, and try to be selective in what jobs she takes. I'm not talking about not doing any particular sex acts, I mean she should avoid scenes that revel in bad taste and misogyny.

Today's stars earn much more money than the contract actors of Hollywood's Golden Age. But they aren't larger than life Superstars. Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Cary Grant, John Wayne, you won't find Superstars like these in Hollywood today.

In the 70s/80s, Seka had her name up in lights downtown in every city in the country, including Topeka, Kansas. Newspapers everywhere listed pornstars and their movies in the entertainment section. There were more pics of Veronica Hart in the NY Post than Jimmy Carter. Coed Fever had a grand opening on Broadway with Annette Haven waving to the crowd.
They were true superstars.
Nobody knows who Jenna Haze is outside the porn freak crowd.

Hmmm...Someone will have to define "superstar" to me before I can answer the question.
If you mean "superstar" in the sense of a pornstar who's the best known outside of porn by the mainstream...Maybe I'm missing something but I'd have to say Tera Patrick is probably the most well known pornstar still working. When Jenna Jameson was a big deal Tera was able to piggyback that to the point that even though she's probably less visible now she's still remembered for the time she was more visable.
If you mean "superstar" in terms of making the most appearances and gigs outside of porn...It may be Stormy. I don't know it personally for a fact but going by the talk here it sounds like she is. Stormy seems to be out there but it's not quite the same type of exposure that Jenna and Tera got. It seems like Jenna and Tera got their exposure because they were pornstars. Stormy seems to be getting exposure and happens to be a pornstar.
If you mean "superstar" being judged on being in demand in porn, great performer and the girl who gets the most people excited overall...I'd say it's Sasha Grey. Sasha is usually in the deal production movies, moves around around the industry from feature to gonzo from big budget to cheap down and dirty, still gets boxcovers for most of the movies she does. As a performer she pretty much does it all and hits pretty much fetish/genre of porn. Also as a performer she delivers the goods pretty much every time. I know some people will say Jenna Haze over Sasha but Jenna isn't as versatile (my opinion) as Sasha. I think Jenna is big but in a smaller niche'.

I would have to say Evan Stone - clearly everyone is thinking about women on here, but he is someone that my non-porn-fan friends could recognize. He has star power in a way that the mainstream seems to enjoy (as evidenced by his brief South Park appearance and his unexpected Superbowl "interruption"...).

Sasha Grey only started her porn career in 2006 and she's already been on national television, Rolling Stone magazine, music videos for well known artists like Smashing Pumpkins and The Roots, and now she has the lead role in a Steven Soderbergh movie. Steven Soderbergh, can you believe that? the man is an Oscar winner, a major player in Hollywood, and he cast Sasha for his project
so yeah Sasha is definitely head and shoulders above the pack, only 3 years into her career
her fucking Youtube video about eating sperm has 1.9 million views
i admit i was a doubter who thought she would burn out quick.
it turns out she really is as serious as she claimed

There are a number of what I would call "A" class performers eg Sasha - Jenna - Bobbi just to name a few of perhaps 20 or 30 in the first league. For anyone to stand out head and shoulders above the others is unlikely but that is what a superstar would have to do. Each one of those 20 or 30 has a loyal following but it is unlikely that there would be agreement amongst us porn addicts as to which 2 or 3 are really superstars. What I am trying to say is I think in todays market it is unlikely that 2 or 3 girls can be singled out as being vastly superior to perhaps the 30 odd girls who would make up the premier league of pornstars.

The porn industry seems to be getting in the way of creating any kind of a superstar. First, the industry makes too many movies with too many different performers. And second, most of the movies today are the formalistic kind that "features" five different performers - so in any given movie, there really isn't a star, even though some performers are better than others. I think performers drive porn sales through a combination of their looks and performances, yet the porn studios rarely feature a star in most of the movies they make.

Agreed--totally. I think that her attitude and ability to express herself, as well as her "real" quality really have brought her so far ahead of the pack, it's unbelievable.
When I think of Sasha, I think of adult films as only ONE of the things that she does--whereas with many others, I think of adult films as the main thing that they do.
If that makes any sense.

I would say Sasha is doing something different. It isn't really porn superstardom - it's something different.

Jenna Jameson was the Last Porn Superstar, using the criteria of someone who not only made numerous creative & commercially successful sexvids & won all the major awards; but also controlled her career & became financially secure, plus was well-known outside of porn.
Stormy and Sasha and Jesse have some name recognition outside of porn, but not as much as Jenna Jameson has--even now. Mary Carey has major name recognition outside of porn, but for all the wrong reasons. Plus, Mary's sexvids were never good on any level-- from couples to gonzo.
Jenna Haze is racking up most of the industry awards right now, but is not known outside of porn. If you went into a college class and said the name "Stormy Daniels" or "Jenna Haze" the guys would know who she is, but if you said "Jenna Jameson" both the guys and the girls would know her.
Bottom line: being a "superstar" is about "industry domination" and nobody, before or since, has ever done it at the level of Jenna Jameson.

It can't be done anymore with mere porn performances, because there's always someone sleazier (which is what we learned from the last decade), and none of them gained enough traction to become real superstars.
In this climate, if someone wanted to launch herself into the stratusphere she would have to use the new model of celebrity: She'd have to go the Lohan route.
Become the darling of the daily media, the tabloid photographers. And she'd have to give them something huge as a reason to follow her to the grocery store for months. Say for example that a stripper type woman was the reason for Brad and Angelina's breakup, and that Brad and Angelina's breakup became a year-long media event. Then, on top of that, let's say the starlet turned around and gave the media something they really liked and could get long-term mileage out of: what if she told reporters that she "did it for Aniston." Imagine! "That's right, I did it all for Jennifer Aniston because I always felt she got such a raw deal from Brad Pitt, so I wanted to use my body to bring some sexual justice to Aniston by breaking up Brad's new marraige!"
This would make her the type of porn superstar you people are talking about as if it'll never exist again. Because tabloid media and "legit" media (which is increasingly becoming a laughable term) wouldn't care anymore that she was in porn--she'd be such a huge story that they couldn't ignore her because the population would be so intrigued. So my point is that it CAN happen again, the superstardom thing, it just hasn't because the circumstances haven't been right OR no starlet has put herself in the right "position" for it to happen.
(And you're welcome for this roadmap to huge naked success.)

Your roadmap is interesting. But it seems to me that Mary Carey is doing exactly what you recommend, and I don't believe she's in the Porn "Stratusphere".

If you're talking about "superstar" of the Jenna Jameson type then no, I don't believe you're going to see another one of those anytime soon. Jenna's career was made up of timing, luck and her taking advantage of what dropped in her lap. I think most of the mainstream just accepted Jenna as "The pornstar" and it's a "been there, done that" type of thing that they don't see the need of another girl to step into that role. Why would they? With all due respect to the names being mentioned here what could they bring to the mainstream table that Jenna and Tera haven't? They've heard the "Yes, I'm a pornstar and a businesswoman, the industry isn't what you think it is...etc., etc..." It's been said and done already.
The next "superstar" of the Jenna J. type from porn will have to do something that's exciting, scandalous, or "news worthy" to get press and the pornstar angle would just be icing on the cake.
Personally, I don't think the porn biz needs or even benefits from that type of "superstar" overall. Yeah, Jenna made tons of money and got tons of recognition from the porn industry but did her presence help porn overall?

Simple.
You search for the lady on Google Image search with filter off. If more than 2 images are profile with clothes on, she is a superstar.

good point. Mary Carey ran for governor, has done reality television shows, has said controversial things about celebrities just to get tabloid attention. none of it has really helped her become a bigger "star". she might be somewhat better known than she was before, but unlike Sasha Grey, no one is calling her up to be in their project.... unless you count Celebrity Rehab House.

Even Jenna Jameson was a crossover star. I think her "E! True Hollywood Story" was the most viewed episode in the series, and, of course, she appeared on Howard Stern a lot.
The megastars get known beyond the world of porn fans, and as a result, when someone wants to check out porn for the first time, they'll go, "Oh, I've heard of this girl, she must be good."
Sasha is starting to get known outside of porn, and she is also a favorite of porn fans. I expect her to have a great career.
