Veronica Vice announced on twitter that she's 'quitting the Internet' although people have taken it to mean she's quitting porn.
http://getviced.com/vices-basement/13802705?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter.
She lists lots of reasons Internet trolls, haters, demanding fans etc. But one of the things she says is she reckons the average girl earns about $50k a year. Which doesn't seem a lot when you consider the risks and sacrifices involved in the line of work. A few other girls also commented in her feed that they felt the same way.
She says there just aren't enough companies shooting but absolutely no shortage of girls joining the biz. It seems to me that for the job to be feasible for the girls there needs to be less of them so that they each get more work. There does seem to be quite a high turnover of girls joining and leaving the adult biz in quite a short space of time.
What do people think?

This is how a free market normally works. Supply and demand naturally balance each other out.

Never heard of her and it sounds like she doesn't have the mental toughness to make it in porn.
And, no, thee are not too many girls in porn. I wish there were more (coughKate Uptoncough).

Kind of what I was getting at. I just wonder if we're currently at a situation of low demand/high supply.

Yes, we probably are.
But I think there was never a time in porn when the supply of new female talent was so low that there actually was a financial advantage for them. I think the producers always had the power to say "You think your pay is too low? Sorry, then I'm casting the next girl" because there were enough aspiring female performers. In that regard, today's times may not be that different.

Too many girls? For vanilla stuff, maybe but for the more hardcore, fetish and kinky stuff, I don't think so.
The internet has made it possible for even more girls to get into the industry and there are more paysites than I could afford to subscribe to without having to live on bread and water.
You're not paid by the risk factor or the personal sacrifices. You're paid what producers and the market say is reasonable. I'd put money on a Lieutenant in the US Army not making that kind of money in a year and he or she would have risked life and limb and made all sorts of sacrifices in his or her line of work.

Jeez, I'm so tired of hearing people complain about decline of porn biz!! If you don't like it get a real freaking job like the rest of us. Ok. The fast easy money days of porn industry are gone my friends!!! Only the cream of the crop will make money now. And here is a reality check folks .. the average American household income (with two people working) is about $50K per year!!! And if she were working for minimum wage at Wal-Mart she would make less than $17K per year!!!
I remember strippers complaining about the decline of the dance clubs. That used to be even easier fast money for them. The strippers moved on to doing porn. Now that porn biz has declined they have moved on to escorting which most were doing already but doing it UTR.
To me its no different than the decline of the real estate business with the housing bubble. Remember all these real estate agents, mortgage brokers, house flippers, builders, and so on all making easy fast money? Then the bubble popped and they all bitched and moaned about the loss of their easy fast money jobs. Well those days are gone and they ain't coming back at least not for another 30 yrs. Porn biz is similar. They had a great decade or two then the bubble popped. They won't see another heyday until the next generation of high tech comes allowing them to offer new kinds of product and services.

I just read the link she linked to in her tweet http://getviced.com/vices-basement/13802705?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter and even though I am not familiar with her, she looks beautiful, but anyway $50,000 while it is a lot of money to me, it isn't generally considered a lot in our society, doesn't seem like a lot for everything they do. Like the OP said, "Which doesn't seem a lot when you consider the risks and sacrifices involved in the line of work."

^ But at the same time, $50,000 is a lot for a job that doesn't require even a high school diploma, never mind any other professional training.
Many of our porn girls do not have a high school diploma. (Then again, some hold multiply university degrees.)
But my point is that if you don't have any education or professional training, how much money should you expect to make? $50,000 in porn is a lot better than the $15,000 (or less) that some of your friends who also dropped out might be making at a fast food place or at the mall.
My job had as a minimum requirement two university degrees, before I was even allowed to put my name on an application. To actually get a job, a lot of further professional training was required. And I make less than $50,000. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my job, and it does look like there are opportunities for advancement as well (and thus salary increases). But considering the eight-nine years and $100,000+ I put into it, I have a hard time feeling bad for girls who may have jumped right into their job days after they turned 18 and dropped out of school, and are making more than I am. Added risks or not. If they don't like it, they could always finish high school, go to college/university/apprenticeship and work hard like the rest of us suckers.
Also, consider that they make that $50,000 because they only work a handful of days each month (some more than others of course). They could always get a job mowing lawns on their days off to supplement their income. No one gives a shit if a porn girl cuts your grass. Or some other low profile job. But not too many of them do that.

I'm inclined to agree, and it's a shame--Veronica Vice sounds like a really good porn name.
As for "too many" women in porn--there are "too many" people in entertainment, period. For every one person that makes it as a star, or even as a working entertainer, there are a dozen or more who are just ekeing out a living or failing entirely and have to rely on other employment to support themselves. It's a fierce struggle for anyone trying to succeed in entertainment, mainstream or adult.
While we would hope that anyone who wants a porn career could have one, the fact is that the odds are against anyone who isn't thoroughly dedicated to succeeding. I have to wonder if our Ms. Vice has that kind of dedication.

^ Indeed. Think of all the "actresses" in Hollywood who are working as waitresses because the work just isn't there. Or all the "basketball players" who wind up playing semi-pro ball in small-town Alberta while working as a farmer during the day.
It's tough out there. And there may not be anyone or anything to blame if you don't make it. There just aren't enough spotlights for all the people who want to be stars.

^ They must be the exception to the rule then. Otherwise the median household income in the US wouldn't be just under $50,000 (US Census info for 2009, PDF file). Meaning that half of all US households have a combined income of under $50,000.

From a personal point of view if I was a hot chick I wouldn't go into porn for $50k a year. Probably alienate my friends/family, risk catching an STD, have the whole world know what the inside of my asshole looks like. In most cases for what is maybe a 5 year career. At the end of which I would struggle to get a normal job. I mean what do you tell employers you've doing for the last 5 years? Probably also find it quite difficult to have a relationship with a guy when you're in the biz or also afterwards.
Having said all that I don't really have sympathy for Veronica Vice much in that blog. I mean what she's basically saying is she made a pretty radical decision to go into porn thinking she'd earn $500k a year but now it turns out its actually more like $50k she's pissed off at everyone else. Really? You didn't look before you jumped and that's other people's fault?
I also have little sympathy with her whining about fans contacting her. I mean c'mon you set up a twitter account in your porn name you put xxx on the end so everyone knows its you, you put a little blog saying you're a 'mattress actress' etc and then you're pissed off when guys tweet you saying 'You're hot will you do IR...are you gonna go back to brunette at any point? I loved you with dark hair...etc'.
As a pornstar attention is your oxygen. If you do want to make that big money only a few do, branch of into directing/producing etc you need to be the star on everyones lips. The one that Joe six-pack has heard of when he stumbles embarassed into an adult DVD store and picks up off the shelf the first DVD with a star he's heard of. In a weird way the more demanding tweets and trolls and haters you get the better because that means more people know you. I'm sure they get tweeted some vile stuff but as another poster suggested a thick skin is a pre-requisite of the job. Just ignore it, block them and forget about it.

Strictly in terms of supply/demand and available jobs in porn these days there probably is too many girls around.
$50k a year for a job that requires no education doesn't sound too bad. If girls feel that $50k doesn't seem like a lot when considering the risks and sacrifices involved with doing porn they can choose to do something else. Nobody has to do porn.
As for this Veronica Vice person, well...not sure there's much nice to say. Being somewhat famous, whether you are doing porn or you're an athlete, will attract a decent amount of attention. Most of it will be good, some of it will be not so good. With the thousands of people giving porn girls every compliment under the sun and showering them with gifts it can't be too hard to ignore those few who say mean things. Not sure what she actually expected when she made a twitter under her porn name.
As for expecting to earn $500k a year, spending 5-10mins on google could easily have told her that there's less porn being made today.
Before deciding to do porn people should really do at least a small amount of research about income, what kind of scenes/sex acts they are willing to do/not to do etc etc. They should also considering how doing porn is going to affect their life during and after porn regarding family, relationships, future jobs and such.

Can you imagine how popular that might be? You can't tell me that men or women who have masturbated to these girls wouldn't love to be able to see them in person. I think that this is the kind of business that's a win win for everybody. The people who need someone to take care of their lawn get it from the hot porn performers they watch on the net/dvd and the girls can get some fresh air, decent exercise and they can work on their tan.
The homes that hire those porn performers would probably have the best cut lawns in the neighborhood if only because they would get them cut at least once or twice a week...Even if it didn't need it.

If you subtract all the girls who never had any intention of shooting more than a few scenes, those who find this line of work isn't for them after all, and those who turn out to be too unreliable for repeat bookings, there probably aren't too many girls in porn anyway.
The only reason I've heard of Veronica Vice is the one scene she had on Brazzers a while ago. (Checking now, it was released last December.) I actually thought she was one and done and long gone.

$50,000 a year isn't what I'd consider good money for a pornstar. But like most career choices where you're a free agent or basically you're your own boss, your earning potenial is depended upon how hard and smart you work. I'm just guessing here but people in this thread never heard of her and someone mentioned that she's pretty so that tells me she has the potential to make more but for whatever reason doesn't want to put in the effort. Also, the fact that she's tired of fans requesting/demanding more from her says a lot.
I don't think a girl can have big success in porn these days without total commitment and embracing being a porn player. Unless a girl is super beautiful/hot they aren't going to be able to sustain a profitable career in porn with a long list of things they won't do, people they won't work with or studios they won't shoot for. Also, you've got to do the work to get people to notice you. I also think the porn work is just a base and you supplement that with websites, dancing, appearances, and the other stuff. All those things feed off each other to make a girl more well known and popular.
I could be totally wrong here and perhaps the business is tougher than I realize these days but I think if a girl is fairly goodlooking and is willing to put in the work, she can still make a good living for at least a while in porn.

Are there too many girls in porn? No, there can never be. You can't look at these things like they're government jobs or 9 to 5 jobs where people get hired and have a steady gig with an employer that has a quota of people they need. If there's 500 girls or 50,000 girls the girls who can deliver the goods will always win out and get the most work. The ones who don't or can't simply won't work as much or at all. Just because a girl is a "pornstar" doesn't mean she's actually in porn. She still has to be booked for work. I have to imagine there are girls who've done a couple of scenes and are technically "pornstars" but for whatever reason isn't going to be called on much if ever again. Those girls are pornstars but they aren't going to hold back or take bookings from other girls.

I think to do well in porn a girl has got to do be willing to do most things. If you look at the proper 'pornstars' they nearly all do everything; gangbangs, blowbangs, GG, BG, anal, IR, BDSM etc. The odd one such as Alexis Texas get away with avoiding anal or whatever but you've got to be really stunning to do that and still have a good career in porn.
I was reading a thread on another adult forum. A new girl asking for advice on her career in porn. She had just signed to an agency. Nice looking but not stunning and not with an amazing body or anything. Anyway she'd only do GG or BG with her boyfriend. She didn't like it when somebody pointed out that unless she loosened her limits she wouldn't last a year. Good advice though. She'll get a few GG bookings as a new girl. Maybe shoot a 'couples' video. But then they're going to want to see more from her and that's when there'll be the rub. She'll either do more things or find very little work coming her way.

I know my following statement is stretching it but not necessarily since the wife could also be into porn and she has fantasized about trying it with one of the girls she has seen on video. Not to mention that porn guys could also do the same thing as the girls and this way they could satisfy both the male and female market.

It depends, the variety is great. However some girls don't have enough talent to make it. People seem to think that any girl can be a pornstar that is so not true, it takes the right look, personality, abilities etc.
That what makes the difference of a girl that just do a few movies to get cash, compared to all the highly sought after professionals like Dana DeArmond, Amy Brooke, Alysa etc.

^I agree that Dana is in a class of her own but I don't think that most girls looking to do porn today need all that much talent because so much of the porn being made is gonzo and talent is not what a girl needs. She just needs to be able to get fucked by as many people as possible, in as many holes as possible and get ejaculated in the face. Now some might call that a talent but I don't.

^ I gotta disagree, Pat. I girl who doesn't know to fuck can ruin a scene. Even if the girl is beautiful if she's just laying there doing nothing, saying nothing that's a pretty boring and bad scene.
I want a girl who has the talent to fuck, talk the dirty talk and make the scene explode.

there are more girls in porn nowadays (internet/social media made it more accessible for girls to get in) and less companies shooting regularly.
probably 60% less companies than in 2006

I'm trying to figure out if you're just easy to please or just jaded. "Talent" is absolutely needed and makes a huge difference in a pornstar's career. If talent weren't a factor then the best looking women or the women who are willing to do the most sex acts would be the most successful and popular girls in porn. But it's clearly obvious that isn't the case. Even in Gonzo porn talent is important because they're putting on a performance. They have to make the positions look sexy, look like they're totally into the sex even if they aren't for some reason, find the right amount of sexual response without looking like they're bored/aren't into it or go overboard trying to sell it, and do all that with charm and charisma. All that stuff takes a talent that may not be obvious to some but makes a huge difference in any performance.

There will ALWAYS be a supply of new young girls who don't want to go to college, trade school, military, or work a normal 9-5 job and instead go into porn biz. Blame the decline of the traditional family (i.e. no father around to keep his daughter off the pole as Chris Rock put it), and the fact there is no longer as much of a stigma associated with working in adult entertainment biz. Just look at the increased numbers of sisters and mother/daughters doing porn now compared to the 70s and 80s.
That's why you see a lot of older female stars in favor of raising the age limit from 18 to 21 or even 25 years old. Similar to how NFL and NBA players wanted to limit the flow of new rookies allowed to go pro. They also capped their salaries.
That's why older pornstars like Lisa Ann and Julia Ann deserve a lot of credit for being able to last so long in the porn biz competing against all these new girls. To stay on top like that and not have fans get bored of you is not easy.
