Is it getting easier to be gay in America? Just when I start to get the feeling that Americans are becoming more accepting of gays and lesbians, I read something that just gets me depressed again.

I was cruising around kiddie dvdtalk.com in the Other forum section, where there are always at least 3 or 4 long threads debating the evils of homosexuality. Sure, there are a few people in those threads who quote bible verses, and say we're going to burn in hell, but it is a little refreshing to see there are also quite a few people in there standing up for tolerance, and try to open people's mind about homosexuality.

But, as I read these threads closely, they all seem to be talking about acceptance of homosexuality... with a condition. "As long as they're not out and flamboyant about it, it doesn't bother me" or "As long as they don't hit on me."

I got to thinking... why the hell can't we be out and flamboyant about it? Why do we need to continue to hide in the closet and pretend we're "normal"? What is so bad about a big nelly queen running down the sidewalk waving a rainbow flag? And why are straight men so terrified of getting hit on by gay men? Women have to deal with unwanted advances all the time, and you don't hear them whining about it!

Seems like these people want to live their lives with blinders on. We can do whatever we want in our private lives, just as long as they don't have to hear about it or see it. Do they have any idea how hard it is to even have a conversation on a day to day basis with someone and NOT somehow mention you are gay?

Straight guy: So how was your weekend?
Me: oh not bad.
Straight guy: Do anything exciting?
Me: Well, me and my boyfrie... er... roommate went to the cities and went barhopping.
Striaght guy: Did you happen to watch Baywatch last night? Man chick X sure has huge hooters!
Me: <rolls eyes>

Sorry for the rant. I feel a little better now.

I hear ya JB, and I shake my head when I read those posts over there to. I've stopped replying to those, it really is just beating my head against a brick wall and it's sad.

I think eventually people will accept gay/lesbian folk with no conditions, but it is going to take a long, long time.

i know what youre saying about trying to hide your lifestyle even in common conversation, its near impossible and usually just makes it more obvious.

its a catch 22, be open and make instant enemies, or be closeted and feel deceitful and always worry someone will "find out" which makes being gay feel like something shameful.

i wish i had some pearls of wisdom, or some inspiring thing to say to make you feel better.

maybe just i hear ya, and youre not alone my friend.

joeblow - that's why i stopped reading dvd talk - i just couldn't have conversations about anything with people who say the shit they do in the 'judging gay' threads. i try to go back, but the same ignorance reveals itself in other discussions as well.

it's difficult to argue with the bible thumpers - they will never see another perspective. and generally i just want to swear at them and call them idiots when i read their posts.

sadly i don't think it is an easier to be gay in america as a whole. though i do think there are more and more areas in america where gay is as normal as straight.

if it makes you feel any better you can be as flamboyant as you want here. the world would be pretty dull without queens :)
