Although I have no idea how the inner workings of the business goes (and perhaps this has always been the case), shooting a lot of surplus content in case something out of the ordinary happens (like the industry and a substantial part of the country being shut down) is a smart business move. Hopefully other companies (especially ones who thought not to do so up to now) are taking note...

^ It's a smart business move but you would likely need a decent cash flow/reserve to create a large backlog of content. If there's a studio that just about breaks even or turns marginal profit, that large backlog of content may be a luxury they can't afford. Banks won't offer much support and private investors will want to know when there will be a return on their investment unless you pay back their it through a profit share of the non-backlogged content.
