Adam and Eve has just released Appassionata as a 2 DVD set. In our chat with Asia she called Appassionata one of her favorite couples movies (Search for the Snow Leopard being the other.)

Here's what I know about the DVD features so far:
Authored by Simon Wolf and Asia Carrera
New interviews
Bloopers
BTS
special 12 minute all sex montage
tons of other features

Asia has some pics from Appassionata on her site

I can't wait to watch this as well. Asia's one of my favorite performers and I know she's really proud of both the movie and the DVD. I also know that Adam & Eve put a lot of effort into it which normally means a great DVD. We shall see!

Let us know how it is...the only review I've seen of that movie is rather lukewarm about it (high production value but a rather convoluted script and average action). I'm also curious why it needs to be a two-disc set, since you can squeeze a lot of stuff onto a dual-layer disc.

Off on a tangent from the Appassionata release, (which means I'll have to fine my never-watched VHS copy and see if it deserves "the upgrade") I'd be interested in hearing from The Ripster about some of this imported asian pROn, err porn, after all, it's all imported to me..

Do you have any reviews up, or any other details?

cheers,

scipio

I just watched this, and aside from being very impressed with the mainstream-quality DVD menus, I was utterly bored with the feature and appalled with the image quality. And I still don't know why this collector's edition couldn't have been squeezed onto one dual layer disc. I'll do a review if I can motivate myself to watch it again...

The noise thing really is inexcusable. For about $500- they could have run the whole movie through a denoise process and come up with a slightly softer but much less offensive picture.

I think one of the reasons they put it on 2 discs may be because of the grain. Anything with that much noise in it has to be encoded at a very high bit rate to keep the noise which yields a very large file, which could be a reason why they chose 2 discs over one, simply because with the movie itself being such a huge file, they couldn't fit it all even on a dual layer disc.

I was thoroughly impressed by the effort that went into the menus and think that the bios alone are worth buying the DVD for.

Anyone know what Adam & Eve DVD is going to get this treatment next? I'm assuming that not all of their DVDs will because of the expense, time and money wise.

Hello All.
The APPASSIONATA DVD was tough to encode due to the 35mm Film. Like Midsummers Nights Cream and a few others we shot on film, they translate poorly to DVD. We do the best we can.
Coming in the near future:
WOLF'S Tail
X-Girls

Both will be high end disks. I expect Wolf's tail to be exceptional, done by the same folks as Witchs Tail and APPASSIONATA.
Take a look at Emerald Rain and Crystal Dreams, both also loaded with features.
We will continue to keep quality high, and continue to listen for new ideas. I have received much good feedback on the "All-Sex" feature on Crystal Dreams and Midsummers.
X-Girls also has that feature. These DVD'S represent outstanding consumer value, and will MORE then hold it's own against comparable VCA or Wicked disks. Content is a matter of taste, and Adam & Eve will usually be more couples oriented.
One of the disks we are most pleased with is ASS ANGELS.
It seems that very few studios are releasing well done compilation product. ASS ANGELS is 4 hours, and very well done.

I don't get it.

All the great Hollywood movies are shot on film, and they look gorgeous on DVD.

Then why porn on film translates poorly?

Meesa confused.

I dunno.

Evil Dead was shot on 16mm.
Hellraiser was shot on 16mm AND with soft focus.
Both look gorgeous on DVD, almost no grain at all.

There are lots of different variations of 16mm film just like when you go and buy film for your still camera, but to an even larger extent. Let's assume they bought cheap film stock, let's also assume that they had a crappy transfer from film to video. If you start with grainy film and then multiply that by a transfer that was cheap, you will end up sometimes enhancing the grain or noise in the picture. IF you look closely on tv you'll see this artifact in every show you watch. If you're watching golf and they do a closeup of the ball on the green you'll see a dark line in the transition from the white ball to the green grass. It's called edge enhancement, detail or gain. Some stations have it set higher than others, CBS here in the states seems to have their detail cranked higher than most. Not sure about Brazil, but look at your picture closely next time, you'll see what I'm talking about.

As for the other shows that don't have this, or as much as in Appassionata, maybe they used better film stock, or had a better transfer or both. Shooting film is easy to screw up if you don't do it right and even easier if you're shooting 16mm.

And if you're comparing ANYTHING mainstream to adult, that's like comparing apples to oranges. Every aspect of mainstream is scrutinized over by specialists and TONS of time and money is dumped into every project. When you make movies, most of the time, technical quality is directly proportional to amount of time and money spent on each project. I never said 16mm was a poor format, I just said there are variations on the quality and I'd bet that Appassionata was not shot on the same stock with the same lenses and heads or did it have the same transfer that Hellraiser or Evil Dead had.

Also, when mainstream goes to DVD, they have literally millions of dollars of compression hardware and equipment at their fingertips and usually very capable staff running it to make sure every shot looks its absolute best. This simply doesn't happen in adult because the cost isn't justified.

Doug Simpson hit the nail on the head. While we may think a few hundred thousand is alot to spend on an adult feature, that would not cover the catering for a mainstream feature. :)
our parent company just did an "R" rated film, starring C.Thomas Howell called "Seperate Ways"

Doug Simpson (any relation to Bart? )

I don't know about Hellraiser , but Evil Dead was shot on the cheapest 16mm film stock available at the time. Of course, who did their transfer was independent giant Anchor Bay (there's an Elite Edition too).

But I have seen transfers of 16mm and even 35mm movies made by cheap-shit companies HERE IN BRAZIL, and they looked fairly good.

Of course, I didn't saw Apassionata yet (they can send me screeners, then I can write about 'em in my mag - wink wink!), so I'm not judging the movie per se , just demolishing (in a caring way, like tough love ) the statement that "film transfers poorly on DVD". Well, it doesn't.

But you have a point: spending like, a gajillion dollars in a top-notch, anamorphic transfer for a porn is not the wisest thing to do. Unless said porn stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston in an all-anal romp...

We're also forgetting one thing: the operator. You can have all the money and the best equipment around, but if you're operator sucks, then so will your product. Chances are, when the scan the film to video, they'll do it at a mainstream post house, because I would imagine that there isn't an adult post house with the necessary film scanning equipment to transfer film to tape. At that mainstream post house they're not too big on working on porno, cause God knows what the neighbors might say, let alone other clients who may happen to be there at the same time (even though they're the guys who are buying this stuff in the end, but that's another topic). So they schedule this work to be done after hours and probably not by their "A" crew, more likely by a guy who wants to learn how to operate the equipment. Ergo, the result being shotty work, but who cares, it's just porn, right? And they'll never knwo the difference, they'll just assume they (the guys who shot it)screwed up and that's what we'll tell them if they ask.

I'm pretty sure that's what heppens in these situations.

As for my relationship to Bart, you'll have to ask Tina Tyler about my name...

With that said, with such poor results in the DVD transfer, why is anyone bothering to shoot on film? From my unsophisticated eye, transferring film to video looks a lot worse than trying to make Beta tape look like film. It seems to me that the extra expense for film could be used for something else, such as better authoring gear.

It may be apples to oranges, but I've seen some of Andrew Blake's Studio A releases that were shot on 16mm AND look absolutely gorgeous on DVD. I know he spends a lot of money and time to make sure they look perfect, but I don't buy the "you can't expect mainstream results from adult studios." It is a matter of expertise and willingness to throw bucks at it -- mainstream or adult.

In my opinion, A&E and Wicked (and perhaps Digital Sin, although we'll see with Dark Angels if it was just a fluke) have come the closest to mainstream DVDs in terms of visual design and supplements. I only wish they could figure out the film to video transfers.

I guess you're right, Bart... uh, Doug. I saw it happening a lot of times.

But hey... I know that shooting on film gives the movie a "classy" look, but... why not resorting to good ol' Beta? It may not be classy, but at least it's pristine.

(Oh, I forgot to tell something: it was the company I work for, Ágata/Sexxxy, that released Apassionata on VHS here in Brazil).

I agree if your not going to go for the best from end to end when using film (best lenses, stock, transfer)..it's going to show.

But most of all film grain CAN'T be compressed well. Therefore it can't be encoded for DVD transfer without artfacting. Example, if I was tell you about a dog that just walked into my house, I would say, "A big white dog walked into my house, then went in to my bed room and ate my shoe.
Not "The big white dog walked in to my house, the big white dog walked into my bed room , the big white dog ate my shoe." I don't need to describe the dog in every step, once I tell you the description, I don't have too describe it every time. Basiclly, that's what DVD does to save space. But too much film grain makes the pixils of every field different, so the encoder can't repeat anything. DVD isn't magic, it can't make a bad film look good.

Yes, Andrew Blake's stuff looks great, and believe it or not, so could Appasionata if you re-transferred the film from the orignal print. I think Appassionata's transfer is the main culprit as to why it looks so bad. As I said before, you could even make Appassionata look better from the edit master that exists now if you ran it through a degraining process whcih any reputable post house can do relatively inexpensively. I just think Appassionata got screwed technically every way you can get screwed.

In one of the interviews, Asia and Bud talk a little about the quality. The cameraman hadn't worked with film before and it sounds like there were quite a few screwups with the film. It's too bad, but after the interview, I'm almost surprised it ended up as good as it did.
