I’ve thought about it in the past, but always nixed it due to time, the thought that I’d have to do one every year, and knowing that there was too much good stuff that I didn’t see. This year, however, something seems different and I’m going to do it. The heck with it. Best Couples DVD - Blind Sex Dates . After spending a bit of time as Seymore Butts’ editor, Bishop struck out on his own with this one and did a nearly perfect job of setup and sex. Rather than trying to compete with companies like Wicked, VCA, and Adam & Eve on their turf, Bishop goes after reality dating shows. There’s a great reality feel to the movie, and more than anything it’s downright fun! Best Gonzo / All Sex DVD - (tie) Chicks & Salsa / Lethal Injections . Pat Myne and his evil twin Danny Case might have a better artistic eye than almost any other non-feature director out there. With these two movies they took what would normally be a one trick pony and gave each of the scenes a bit of variety and made it so that I couldn’t look away. Best Amateur Series - Shot at Home’s Shot at Home Alone series. Selena Silver at Home is the only amateur DVD to earn a perfect 5 overall from me, and although I’ve enjoyed Selena’s work in the past this one made me an instant fan. She opens her house and heart to her fans here like no other star has done that I know of. She isn’t the only one to do so, and there’s a heart and soul that’s run through this series from the start that always puts a smile on my face. Best Foreign Feature DVD - Hot Rats . I’ll admit that this one definitely won’t work for everybody due to its artistic style, but I found it a breath of fresh air. Hot and nasty sex, unique setups, and enough care put into the DVD that you can watch it and know what’s going on in umpteen different languages. Best Foreign Gonzo / All Sex DVD - Euro Angels Hardball 23: Double Anal Mania . I think this title (as well as Christoph Clark himself) got the biggest snub of 2004 by AVN. Once again it’s basically a one trick pony, but there’s such spirit and passion here that rather than coming off as an extreme sex movie where the girls see how far they can push things (like double anal scenes normally do), it comes off as a natural progression of the sex. Even if I could have held some of the blood in my body above my belt while watching this movie my mouth would have been hanging open. Best Interactive DVD - The Perfect Stormy . I’ll admit that this area probably has some very nice competition with Digital Sin’s Groupie Love (which I haven’t had a chance to watch yet). In both cases, the companies decided to try to take virtual sex and interactive DVDs to the next level. While Digital Playground kept things at the same level they’ve been at for years with their Virtual Sex With... series and Digital Sin built on their My Plaything series while keeping the same formula, with these two titles they broke out of the traditional mold while still keeping what worked with virtual sex. I loved how Wicked balanced the POV aspect with a voyeur aspect on The Perfect Stormy , and think that the personal feel of it raised it far past its few limitations. Best Female Performer - Lauren Phoenix. There’s a lot of really fantastic female talent right out there, which makes this one heck of a tough choice. Lauren wins for me because not only does she seem unstoppable sexually, but she also seems to be everywhere . She received two Best Performer awards in a row, and worked hard to earn both of them. Best Male Performer - Manuel Ferrara. Once again, there’s quite a bit of great talent, but Manuel seems to bring things out of women that others can’t. He’s a sexual dynamo, good, looking, and charming. He’s everything a male performer should be. Best Studio - Evil Angel. Not only has it kept up with its normally high bar, it’s added to it with directors like Jonni Darko and Justin Slayer. Granted, Evil Angel was putting out adult movies long before I discovered porn, but I think they were the first company to push movies past the two hour limit to use all the available space they could on VHS tapes. Now they’re pushing things to release longer movies on DVD, with many of their movies running close to three hours, and are frequently releasing two disc sets. In 2004 they released almost ten two disc sets, and they kicked off 2005 with a two DVD set for Tales From the Crack . It’s hard to find anybody out there who doesn’t recognize Evil Angel as being one of the top adult companies out there (even if they don’t care for Evil Angel’s movies), and it’s nice to see that Evil Angel hasn’t let it go to their head and keeps working to put out the best product possible. Best New Studio - 3rd Degree. They’re a fairly late entry for 2004 who looks to have emerged from Metro’s FusXion line, but they’ve definitely made their mark. The movies are hot and very consistent while the DVDs show some nice care into the overall package. They’re even taking a few risks trying to address fan requests. Best Director - Pat Myne. Although there’s some tough competition here, Pat Myne easily rose to the top here. Not only has he put out an incredible volume of movies in 2004, he kept the quality of his movies amazingly consistent. Best Mainstream / Porn Moment - The opening of the live Fashionistas show in Vegas. Not only has it awed fans of the original movie, it’s awed mainstream critics who went into it just looking for ways to find the porn world trying to bastardize and make a mockery of theater. Most Improved Studio - Digital Sin / New Sensations. A few years ago Digital Sin looked to be a company to keep an eye on. Then they started coasting to the point that their DVDs were all nearly identical with the exception of the movie and the photo gallery on their DVD. Things started to turn around for them when Jonni Darko started to get noticed, and there were a lot of people wondering if they’d be able to make it when Jonni left for Evil Angel. This year Digital Sin showed they have what it takes. With directors like Tyrone Shuz, Axel Braun, and Joachim Kessef their movies are stronger than they ever were, and right up there with the material that used to catch everybody’s eye. More than that, they’ve started to put some real effort into their DVDs and are regularly including decent extras like bonus scenes and behind the scenes featurettes. I think Digital Sin is putting out some of the best made DVDs they ever have. Downhill Slide - Wicked Pictures. Most of these ‘awards’ I felt fine in giving. This was the most depressing and hardest for me to give. For years Wicked was leading the way in couples movies, and especially in putting out the best put together couples DVDs around. Yes, they did have Eye of the Beholder and The Perfect Stormy , but this year, they seemed to mov away from the level of quality they used to have. Where their new and bigger movies always seemed to have commentaries, featurettes, and a lot of other extras included, now everything seems scaled back. It seems rare to have a commentary, which isn’t always a bad thing because sometimes they seemed to be struggling during it, but it does stand out as being missing. The movies also seem cut back, and often felt like they were about ten minutes shy of being at the level of quality they used to be. Perhaps the biggest thing that stood out to me was Wicked’s compilations. In addition to their dismal Jenna Jameson Anthology series, they really seem to be putting a lot of focus on four hour compilations. It makes it seem like Wicked’s trying to be a Vivid copycat, which is definitely several steps, as well as a few stories, below the level they were on a few years ago. Worst Studio - (tie) Anarchy and NuTech. Anarchy earns their place here for their virtual sex series (both Playing With and My Virtual ) which takes decent sex performances, adds barely adequate technical knowledge to create a not-quite virtual DVD, and then covers it with loads of false advertising on their covers. Their lack of care for their consumers is shown even more by them doing this for several years. It even looks like they changed the name of their virtual line from My Virtual to Playing With because people were catching on to them rather than that being because they changed from buying movies from Nasty Pix to going with ones made by Jimmie D. Even Vivid should be able to spit on Anarchy for what they’re doing to virtual interactive DVDs. NuTech earns their place with their anime releases. If an entire series has two episodes lasting an hour total, you’re going to have to buy two full priced DVDs to get it. Other studios will charge a couple bucks more and give you the entire series on one DVD if possible. The saddest thing about these studios is that they didn’t just start this kind of thing this year. It’s been ongoing. Best and Worst Adult Industry Moment of 2004 - (tie) Darren James HIV Outbreak / Taylor Summers and Shannon Getsit. These two incidents are easily the worst things to happen in the adult industry in 2004, but there’s quite a bit of good that’s come out because of it. When one looked at the aftermath of the HIV Outbreak you could tell some of the people and companies in the industry who really cared about the talent and some that didn’t care about anything other than themselves. Yes, some set air / land / sea speed records seeing just how quick they could head to Europe to work around or just break the quarantine, but others tried to find ways to keep the quarantine while still making movies (such as what I’ve heard is one heck of a hot Avy Scott scene done by Jonni Darko which might never have been shot otherwise). It also served as a wake-up call for a lot of people that there still is a risk out there and that testing, condoms, and awareness are still very important. Platinum X and Evil Angel stick out in my mind as companies that seemed to be at the forefront of care for the performers, and although I don’t doubt companies like Wicked looked after their contract performers, I didn’t see it as much as I did for PXP and Evil Angel. At the same time, guys like Jay Ashley headed to Europe in an attempt to break quarantine even though he was a second generation risk! Yes, some of the AIM debate heated up again, but this time it heated up with the understanding that an organization like AIM is a necessity for the industry. Much can also be said about the tragedy that struck Taylor Summers and Shannon Getsit. I wish nobody would ever have to go through what Taylor’s family has this year, and I can’t begin to imagine the pain that Shannon did. Thankfully they don’t have to go through it completely isolated due to some of the people in the industry. They came together to make The Charity Event For Taylor Summers and Shannon Getsit to help Shannon and Taylor’s family. The only bad thing about this release is that it seems to have been released very quietly, and very few stores seem to be carrying it, let alone publicizing it. Anarchy has been less than impressive, particularly with regard to their "virtual" titles, and Nutech charges the same amount for 30 minutes of animation that most studios charge for over two hours of sex. David did, like 95% of the production supervision on the DVD, and yes, he did an awesome job, but if we had 3 months less to do it, it would have been nearly impossible. David - of course we'll 'let' you do it for awhile! That's why we're shooting earlier this year - so you can do just an awesome job on this movie and DVD, and we can actually be able to release it simultaneous this time. Oh - and on the Wicked thing again, I also agree that while some people might think that the comps have decreased the overall perceived value of Wicked, I would make an educated guess that the money coming in from those comps is helping to bankroll the excellent (and expensive) movies Wicked is still making like The Collector and Fluff and Fold. Those movies are VERY expensive and I wouldn't know if they make much of a profit or not when all is said and done, but it's the bar setter. I did not use the angle feature on the remote, I used a camera feature to used that feature. Why? because it's different than everybody else and I think it looks cool. ( No misleading here) Extremely Interactive- It is interactive!!! ( No misleading here) Strip Tease- You have a lengthy striptease segment. ( No misleading here) Multiple Toys- Multiple toys is used for the tease menu ( No misleading here) Tease menu- There is tease and pretty good tease! ( No misleading here) POV- Pov shots were used in the DVD ( No misleading here) Different Sex Positions- There are different sex positions ( No misleading here) Back of the Box- Get To Know Ariana- you have a lengthy BTS segment. I don't see any problem there. Trailers- There are 5 trailers Photo gallery- There are 25 photos Stereo- The DVD is in stereo. Multiple-Layer Menus- There are plenty of menus Web Access- there is a web link All region coding- there is PC DVD_ROM Compatable- It is So what is the problem here? Stating that we are the worst company is way too extreme. I've seen enough bad porn to know that we not. Trust me, I had to stand infront of company owners and said that they have the best porn, when in all actuality it was crap.

| OREN Anarchy Films 250 Posts 12/03 | Posted - Feb 2 2005 : 4:55PM Just to be clear is that I don't like using the multi-angle feature on the remote because you find your self pressing it all the time and after awhile the DVD freezes. That is why I added the camera feature so people will know when you have different angles. Stating that it is the easy way out is stupid. My company has authored hundreds of DVD to different other studios, bigger than mine. RedLight, PXP, Adam&Eve, Zero, Sin City etc... So I think we know how to author and do it well. Nothing is wrong in doing it differently than other people. It is easier to do the multiple angles as a remote feature than do the camera feature. Again, I can not please everyone. My gole is to please my customers like Ramesy and the other customers who e-mail me on a daily bases, not the reviewers. For now, My Playing With line would stay the same with the SUPERCORE and foot fetish feature. For example: Columbia House screened my Virtual Lines and they love it. For those who don't know, they are the people who let you buy 12 DVDs or music CDs for a penny. If it is not broken why fix it? Oren [Link] |

Like someone said earlier, to say that you simply filmed the sex act itself from different angles would mean that EVERY movie out nowadays is "multi-angle" and we know that's not the case. Whether or not you think it "looks cool" (LOL, and you're damn right it's different than everybody else) it's hard to deny that that's not only misleading but straight-up false advertising. [Link] |

Evil Angel isn't a great company simply because of their brand, and if you're suggesting that they're slipping by taking on directors that aren't up to par... I heartily disagree. Even Joey Silvera and Christoph (in their earlier days with Evil) started out with some kinks to work out. I'm not "deifying" them, but Evil Angel, almost more than anything else, is all about a standard of consistancy, and I see that in all their directors. I watch Darkko's stuff and while it isn't soul rendingly intense or breathtakingly shocking, it has a lingering after-effect that most directors don't achieve. I remember his scenes. I remember moments from them. Alexis Malone and Jennifer Love in Angels of Debauchery. Tianna Lynn and Ariana Jollee in Angels 2. They stick in my mind, and make me want to go back for more. I think that's a clearer sign of really good direction than the fleeting feeling of seeing some shocking feat performed for the first time, which is what so many others rely on, and as Jamesboston has said, then just get's repeated and repeated and run into the ground until everyone's so sick of it they could puke. I'm not sure that the "OH WOOOOOOWWW!!!" reaction is really what characterizes Jonni Darkko's work--there's something more sophisitcated and harder to copy going on there. He's got an eye for creating images and moments that linger. To me, that's an even greater feat then finding the next "big" camera angle, or the next "in" piece of slut-clothing, and I hope to see his talent for it develop even further as time goes on.
