I would say that if you are truly a Libertarian, you have no choice. Ayn Rand is the Jesus in the religion of Libertarianism.

$2500-$5000 depending on the director and kind of movie it is. Contract directors make more but they also tend to negotiate an upfront or backend royalty on they content they create.

MARIE AND JACK is in its third pressing. XANA AND DAX is in its third pressing. DAMON AND HUNTER is in its second pressing. From the way the boxes are walking out the door, it looks like MATT AND KHYM will be in it's second pressing by Summer. Looking like we'll have to do a fourth pressing of MARIE AND JACK by then too.

Our account the lab and telecine house is current. Mortgages on both our city place and our beach house are up to date, with a little extra towards principle. Health insurance is paid. Credit cards are paid off each month, no revolving balance. We were able to make some upgrades into our production and post-production equipment (some new lenses and my edit bay does uncompressess 4:4:4: HD now!)

Our accounts recievable are fat, and people mostly pay on time. Our accounts payable stand at zero. I've even got a decorative bowl filled with of premium Florida citrus on my kitchen table.

Overall, I've got no complaints. Thanks for asking, Tricia!

This topic is getting funnier by the day, let me put some logic behind this. Each company will pay it's director a certain fee, what ever they can afford or willing to pay, and depends on the projects. Some companies will pay a director money for the whole project and the director will pay all the production cost from this check. We all know and it is not a big secret that directors will negotiate rates and keep the money for themselves. We all shoot the same girls, use the same agencies, locations, artists, authoring and replication houses, but we all pay different prices to our camera and directors. Why because the more work we give the directors, the better the price will be. People have been posted large amount of money, my reaction to that " I'm glad its not me ".

Wait, I do have two complaints.

1) My somewhere in the last few years my car has gone from stately to a piece of shit.

2) I just got a new SDI monitor for edit bay and it's made me realize how bad the TV in our TV room is. I think I wanna get one of them fancy flat screen things.

I guess we all like to get something for free. I understand that it hard to pay a fair market price, it means getting less for your own pocket. At $1000 a movie how much do you have to make to make a living lets say in LA were most adults films are shot you need 35Gs a year That’s to cover a place to live –Health Insurance and legal cost you are in adult after all these are extra expense and have to be paid by you. You need to make 35 movies a year. That’s almost 2 movies a month how many directors do you see are coming out with 2 and half movies a month or 35 a year not to many. Or are these fees per scene? Is paying for such low production why price per units has gone down so much in the industry as a whole? I realize that some companies’ prices have gone up or are holding there own but you can see that they put money in there movies.

Oren makes a good point companies pay for what they can afford. But if you cant afford to pay a fare price then why are these companies not shooting it themselves? Is it something legal? I also wondering what a company makes per movie over a years time or how much a company makes per month since Oren is free to say how much people make maybe he be so kind and tell how much he makes a month and would he trade his pay check with the director per month?

I don’t think if your looking to be a porn director you plan on getting rich. It’s like any art you have to love what you do, but you will likely be that starving artiest. Yes I know anyone can pick up a camera just like a pencil and shoot a scene or draw a picture, but the picture you paint either gone move you or not. . Yes porn is an art form and if you don’t think so then your just in it for the green which is not there and you should move on to a more furtive paying job try being a CEO you have more of business mind http://money.cnn.com/popups/2006/fortune/women_menpay/index.html I bet company porn owners would trade for these pay checks to be one of these CEOs :)

Getting a budget and trying to squeeze out your money out of it seems crazy to me. The cost will eat you up and you wont even get the generous amount that Oren will pay you. You will have to sacrifice you movie and it will become that 95% that is crap out there. You should get a set price like everything else in porn. Talents prices have gone up budgets have gone down. I hear a lot of directors living in their cars or in someone attic because they can’t afford a single apartment. On the flip side like Mike said there are some very talented Directors that make good money but everyone I talked to just talks they are hurting. So I figured Mike rolls with the big wheels or are these owners of their own product, which can be a huge difference. Risk verses rewards can pay off big.
I read on these forms and see that it seems people think talent is the sole cost of movie. But the tools and crew you use will make a huge difference.
You need equipment
Video Camera, which can run you $250 a day to rent, companies don’t provide cameras
If you own a good one then that’s your cost or the camera man’s sorry about the wear and tear and all the liquid juices that will fly all over it. But don’t worry camera’s are cheap.
You have to pay for the operator of the cameraman. If you do have the job skills to shoot camera yourself then that’s an option for you have to make. Don’t let companies say well you can shoot camera and not pay you for it. Jobs a job and you have to get paid for it. You don’t see other people working for free. Same goes for Stills and lighting, etc…
A cost that everyone wants in there movies put no one wants to pay for is Cloths, make-up and Toys if you want these in your movies subtract that from your fee. $300-500 per scene. It’s why you see the same outfits in most movies girls have to bring their own if they want to look good.
Well this is just some of the cost others will add up I can go on and make a list but this is getting to long as it is.
And I haven’t gone in that you have tons of paper work that must be right or your gone eat all the cost. You have to go into editing which can be some more days even if you’re not the editor. If you want it done right that is. Pick out the Box cover shots. Which these things are fun but time consuming and you’re not making anything extra on this time spent. So then again if this trend is about money forget about it. I can see why lots of talents are going back to being talent or doing both. I would love to be able to walk in with only the shirt on my back jump in a scene for a couple of hours and get my paycheck and be done with it. But even talent has their ups and downs.
Don’t forget how this get this started with all the prep time that will go into pitching your movie and getting the money to start with. This can either be the same day or month or 2 or 3 before the company is ready to shoot the movie. You really have to do it for the love of making movies be it adult or as they say mainstream. If you don’t mind budgeting your expense and living by low means your golden. Just my 2 cents although can I just pay 1?
Cheers

The only point I was trying to make is that one person at one company telling everyone else how much Director's make is not showing the whole picture. I know people that own product that barely make enough to shoot more product and I know guys that are rolling in dough. I also know guys that don't own product but who still make extremely good money and I know a few who have to hustle like crazy just to make a few bucks. That being said, really good gigs are hard to come by nowadays and Yani is correct in stating that if money is your primary interest, you'll probably be disappointed.

Now can we get this thread back on track with some more Ayn Rand commentary?

This is a great topic and I'll be shocked if Jules Jordan isn't making at least 5-10 million a year in sales.

The ADT database puts about 120 titles to Mr. Jordan's credit, so what would that be?

120 titles x $15/title x 5,000 unit/year/title = $9M/year

Yeah, sure. Why not.

I hate to break it to ya Tony but in the case of JJ that's probably not too far off. Jules is like the Grateful Dead of porn. The diehards will follow him anywhere and pay any price. Jules could release a tree frog back into the wild and get an AVN award for it.

I've always loved that quote, too. It's very inspirational.

However . . .

When I take the quote apart, I'm not convinced that the four essential elements of her philosophy --

(1) Man is a heroic being.
(2) His own happiness is the moral purpose of his life.
(3) Productive achievement is his noblest activity.
(4) Reason is his only absolute.

-- are necessarily related to one another.

Unless you understand each of those elements in a purely Randian way, that is. Which makes things somewhat tautological, it seems to me.

I've always seen the direct connection between them all although I suppose one could debate whether man is a "heroic being" if one doesn't agree with the other three precepts.

P.S I had to look up "tautological". I was pretty sure that it was another word for redundant but still I needed to open a new window and visit Dictionary.com.

Quote of the week!

Isn't Jules the catalog king, pretty much?
His particular genius is paying certain girls whatever it takes, I suspect, to get them on camera and doing things they don't do for anyone else, if they do anything for anyone else, period. At least one such girl in every other title, I bet. Lily Thai blowbang? Julea London anything? All that early Cris Taliana? Jenna Haze airtight? You know, you'll buy one of those movies and keep it in the permanent collection.

Although he does have that going for him, that's not the reason I was a fan. I really don't care if I'm watching a girls 1st or 20th anal.
He simply hands down shoots what usually amounts to a girl's career-defining scene... whether it's the first time she's done something or not.

How do you think he does it, Tricia?

Is his rapport with the girls better than other directors, so that he elicits stronger, more uninhibited performances? Does he have a keener sense of how to show girls off to their best advantage? Is it something about his technical proficiency with a video camera? Or is it mysterious?

I agree with Tricia.

It doesn't matter if its someone's first, middle, or last scene, he knows how to bring out something, coax them to do more, whatever that his scenes are maybe not always career defining, but at least one of their high points. I don't know what it is either, but if I did, I could bottle it and sell it to some of these other companies who have made watching people have sex and turn off.

And if we are going to discuss Ayn Rand, the Nonsense forum is a bit farther down.
